How does one become a Magician in your setting? Is it a profession? The idea that Magicians wear a standardized ‘uniform’ implies that even if anyone could use magic, there is an institutional or social aspect to being a Magician. Can everyone use magic, or is it unique to specific people/training?
Oh, and why does magic fail when used with intent to harm? Is it a limit placed specifically on Magicians by an external force(ie. government regulation)? Or is the magic itself conscious?
Anyone can become a Magician. It's best learned via a mentor, typically a well-trained Magician who teaches at most five apprentices within a Lodge - Lodge being the typical term for a place dedicated to magical education - over the course of their childhood. It's technically possible to learn from books and the like, though it's highly impractical, difficult, and unpleasant. The actual process of learning magic typically revolves around mastering the ability to actually attune to arcana, which itself is done through a mixture of mental and subtle physical practices. Perfecting magic is best done by simply practicing; casting spells over and over again, measuring the amount of mana forced into the effect by instinct, and trying to perfect the balance while guided bt a mentor is very common.
While there are a number of recognized factions of Magicians, there's no requirement to count oneself amongst them to be a Magician; in this vein, the typical Magician tricorn is more of a social convention than anything. There is no law or necessitated will dictating the uniform, rather it is a matter of offering a convenient shorthand so that non-Magicians may easily request help or otherwise identify a source of safety.
Magic fails when intended to be used for harm just kinda because that's how magic is. No one has ever changed it, no one has figured out why it happens, it just is.
Hey- dunno where else to ask, so for anyone willing to help that stumbles upon this post, trying to get some critique on this design reference I photobashed for my TTRPG.
In short, the game I'm making is about magic-users in a world where magic cannot harm people, so violent conflicts must be solved with non-violent magic. For the design of the Magician, I considered two things overall. The hat, as a tricorn, is mostly a symbol indicating an individual to be a Magician on its own, however it can be easily unfurled so that it can act as mild head protection from rain and the like when needed. The fabric hanging on the sides over the face serves the same purpose, though it's more functional for things like debris and dust. The skirt, on the other hand, typically is used due to freedom of movement, with an outer layer that is useful for hiding or protecting a magic tome. Torsowear and footwear is largely non-standardized. Beyond these basics, Magicians are pretty free to go wild with it.
At a friend's suggestion, I have been considering inner pockets on torsowear being common for Magicians to protect wands and the like.
Most of this is going to be off-handedly mentioned in a sidebar, however I feel that the cohesive design is important to visually convey which characters in the artwork are Magicians and which are not.
Overall wanted to ask if any of y'all have any critiques or suggestions on the general appeal of the basic form, usability as a reference for when I hand it over to whichever artist I hire, or any other flaws which I may have not noticed. I would like to extend my appreciation in advance!
I really like skirt, it def reads to me as fun to visualize choreography for in a theatre of the mind. Like, really emphasizing strong movements of a magician casting off a gust of wind or flying with magic.
I like the idea of what (and i could be wrong) looks to be wand holsters? Given the emphasis on nonviolence its cool to contrast that in the design, to foil it and make it obvious.
The tricorn i really like, it leaves room to customise but gives an out of world clear indication that someone is a magician (or if a magician isn't wearing one, that they are flaunting whatever institutional convention makes these hats typical). I do think the fabric on the sides feels odd to me, like would that not kinda blinder you like a hoodie, cutting off your peripherals? If its further back than im reading it as then it seems to not do what you said about blocking sand hitting your eyes, and at that point id presumably be more like those russian hats, meant to warm your ears or like a shawl to cover from the sun if its thinner. All in all ,it makes sense to me in a temperature sense, or in a sandy or dusty place where that trade off for fabric blocking the peripherals in exchange for blocking debris is worthwile. It just feels like that shouldn't be standard amongst magicians, but rather a modification to the regular tricorn.

I'm reading through an article on the topic of commissioning art for a TTRPG book and, like, it's extremely helpful. The author clearly knows what they're talking about and I feel like I am being very successfully guided through the process to make sure I can ensure a pleasant experience for the artist I hire.
But also the author is so incredibly smug that I want to bash my head into a wall. Five times the article has been interrupted with tangents about things on the internet they hate, every paragraph has at least one snide comment or piece of passive aggressiveness, and it feels like they genuinely hate the reader for being inexperienced enough to need a guide like this. I wish I already knew everything I need so I don't need to read this anymore but I need to be educated about the things I'm doing and AAAAA

I was telling a dude about a TTRPG project I'm working on where you play as wizards whose magic is incapable of harming living beings, so you must find non-violent methods of solving violent situations, and his immediate response was, "You're alienating too many players! The game should be about finding loopholes in the magic rules so you CAN kill people!"
I don't think I've ever had such a visceral reaction to a single sentence.
Like putting people to sleep or forgetting what they were doing? Or more like the gun is now a handful of spaghetti and everyone teleports a little away from everyone else
It's more along the lines of, a giant wyvern is attacking a city, so the players use magic to distract, confuse, or otherwise prevent it from breathing fire over the residential district to give time for evacuation. Above all else, the wyvern seems to be attracted to heat, so maybe the players could try to use magic to make the city cold while one of them sneaks off to a nearby hill to create a giant fire at, or they could goad it into putting too much effort into burning them alive that it becomes too tired to continue hunting humans.
That's a lot of fun. How does the restriction work if the PC doesn't know something would be harmful to that particular beasty can they not cast it? Or is it more harmful effects generally just don't affect living things?
The basic function is that, if a Magician believes, knows, or experiences some amount of uncertainty regarding whether a spell would inflict harm or not, then the spell will fail. It's fully possible for a Magician to accidentally hurt someone with magic, however it is wholly impossible if they expected it could possibly happen.
I find it really interesting how well some mechsploitation writing captures the feeling of a machine being an extension of the body.
I'm a full-time wheelchair user and can say from experience, it *is* my legs. After a while the brain just registers it as part of you.
If something is damaged or calibrated wrong, it feels like walking with a limp. Unusual noises feel like they're coming from your joints. It's deeply intimate and sometimes unsettling when someone reaches into the mechanisms you can't see to adjust something or make repairs.
While obviously it has no sense of touch, someone laying their hands on it feels deeply personal, and invasive if they do so without permission.
Even when I'm not in it, seeing people handle it feels strange, like an out-of-body experience seeing someone handling your limp form.
I can't stay in my chair all the time. It doesn't recline and has little padding so I get sore after long periods, and my country is also quite bad for wheelchair access. With help and a cane I can walk very short distances and transfer to a regular chair. But it's a strange kind of nakedness and helplessness without it. I've seen no better description of that feeling than the way pilots are portrayed outside of their mechs.
I used to need a cane to walk (though I've regained full function after three years of physical therapy) and I felt afraid when I wasn't touching it. If I didn't hold it or let it lean against me at any point, it felt like I had just seen a limb disappear. Often, I would sleep while hugging the cane because I was afraid of losing what felt like a part of myself.

I think one of the cutest things about humans is that when they're at their sleepiest - when they've just woken up, just regained consciousness, just had their nice lil sleep - what's the first thing they do? "Noooo five more minutes pleasssse" and go right back to sleep. It doesn't matter if they need to get up or how long they've slept, they just wanna sleep more and WILL somehow find the will within their cozy lil brains to argue with you about it.
