this ending has undoubtedly been set up from the ACTUAL beginning. the very first time we see Crowley, before the earth was created, he is distraught by the idea that the universe that is worth something by virtue of existing will be destroyed. at the garden of eden, both Crowley and Aziraphale acknowledge that it's a bit.... muddy. the judgements, the choices that humans are forced into. all Crowley wanted, in the end, was to be an "us" with aziraphale, thereby bypassing the entire heaven and hell and god system. what aziraphale wanted was for people to have a chance at being who they want to be. good, bad, whatever. the chance to exist as they were. there is no world where those two would choose themselves over a world of free people free to do what people do. and they, in different forms, found each other anyway. an ineffable plan of THEIR OWN devising, and a happy ending.
