Perhaps the authors of the second amendment of the US Constitution did not intend for every individual to own a gun, but rather every municipality.
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
βA well regulated militia...β
Perhaps the second amendment is not about the freedom to do whatever you want with a gun. Perhaps weβve had it wrong for all these years. At the time of its publication, the second amendment really only alluded to the clunky, heavy, takes-5-minutes-to-reload rifle of American Revolution era (and swords and knives). Today, 150 bullets can be fired in 1 minute.
What if no single individual could own a gun. What if your countyβs government center was the gun cellar should the federal government come βround beating down on your rights. The county can arm its citizens to protect itself from an unjust, larger government. That is explicitly what the second amendment states. The people can, through the organization of the county, create a militia. It did not mean that everyone has the right to shoot beer cans in their backyards with a military assault rifle. Maybe, if we followed the original intent of the law, mentally ill people couldnβt massacre a room full of people.
Side note: if your government is coming to get you and a gun is the only solution, you are already too late. You missed your chance to diplomatically resolve unjust governance. You werenβt paying attention.
Thatβs my rant and Iβm stickinβ to it.
