Simon: I just realized, I had a bad childhood. Grace: Yeah I know. Simon: You know? What do you mean you know? Grace: Look at you. Simon: What do you mean, look at me? Grace: Look at how you stand. People who had good childhoods don't stand like that.
Some whump for lunch:
Something I have not yet seen people consider, despite some of the beautiful science people have added into their fanworks, is that fresh outta the submarine nasty blood-covered Simon doesn't just look a trash panda that carries various diseases, but he actually might be the carrier of some dormant infection or other
And that Grace, in his panic and joy of finding another person in literal space that may or may not be dying in his med bay right now, forgets proper quarantine and safety precautions. Forgets about virgin soil epidemics and the likes, focusing all his energy on saving the only other person on this plane
Perhaps it's just the flu or its Edenian equivalent, ultimately harmless to anyone back on the station and Simon himself, but Grace with his delicate American immune system after years of isolation?
He is gonna get his shit wrecked. I'm saying fever ramblings, splitting headaches, being so so weak, the whole nine yards And it'll up to a still traumatized Simon and a whole gaggle of Eridian scientists to keep Grace from dying while they barely got to know each other so far. But a life debt is a life debt and Simon will not lose the one good thing he got going on in years so soon after getting it
Simon: 'You'll never find the body' is such a boring threat. A better threat would be; 'You'll never stop finding the body.'
Grace: Or just say, 'They'll be finding parts of you for at least four months...and you'll still be alive for three of them.'
Simon: Now that's a threat!
Rocky: *horrified silence*
Rocky: Simon bad influence.
poet rotations
simon, after the adrenaline wears off: oh god oh no i hugged him i TOUCHED him i need to throw myself into dirt and bury myself i need a small space to- what the fuck is he doing in the mental health node
grace, after putting on a video of mars: I found your mountain the one you said you liked and the lake in the crater? we can go there when we get back if you want i think i’m turbo dead legally on earth sooooo
simon, staring blankly ahead: i would give you my seed
grace:
grace: wh at
simon: the- the seed. the highest honor when someone dies. i would give up my place in a burial chamber so you could have a seed planted where you rest
grace: HUH
Simon, unable to shut up: can we tell rocky to mix the soil our bodies become i want to be one with you
grace: hey so is planning funerals like planning a wedding
simon: no (very obviously lying)
grace:
grace: i mean
grace: sure?? we can be dirt together
simon: :)
grace: oh my god you can smile
simon: I HAVE SMILED BEFORE
grace: WH- NOT AT ME
simon: YOU JUST WEREN’T LOOKING WHEN I WAS
grace: do you smile at me when i’m not looking a lot
simon: >:(
grace: your scowl means nothing now you smile at me when i look away
Simon is like GraceRockys weird goopy stray cat who they only occasionally see (well. Who Grace only occurs sees. Rocky can hear him prowling around the ship and let's Grace know when hes asleep so they can watch him because!!! Alone sleep not safe!!!!!) He takes the tiniest portions of food for fear of being too much of a burden (Simon is deadly scared of Rocky and being thrown out the airlock despite Grace's constant reassurance that Rocky is a good kind Eridian who is sassy but not cruel).
Then one day while Grace is looking over the plants (shockingly still alive), Simon quietly pads in and Grace lets him take his time, even as he shakes with questions. And Simon's shoulder very very lightly brushes against his and for the first time, in a voice creaky from disuse, Simon asks if the plants are real and Grace feels like a horse girl protagonist

Growing up in a religious cult and food was seen as special as eating the body of Christ and something you barley got to have, to then waking up on an alien planet and seeing an angel who gives you paradise and feeds you meat made out of his body…Do w. Do we think Simon li. Like passes out or
simon refusing to have his hair cut after being saved by ryland is actually so important to me.
like, maybe his hair was long because nobody would cut it for him and he had no way to do it himself.
personally i like to think his hair was the only way he had to express himself, who he is. his hair is the only thing that felt his, and the only thing that made him feel like himself.
hair holds so much importance, so many people express themselves and who they are through their hair.
besides, i think it reminds him of his mother. she had the exact same hair, maybe a bit longer, and he lets them grow hoping that it would make him remember her face more clearly.
so anyways i’m a huge truther of simon not only refusing to cut his hair but letting them grow even more. it just feels right.
I see a lot of people in the fandom characterize Simon as very religious because he was part of Eden, and I find it quite interesting. I honestly didn't see that in his character, he seems to want to distance himself from Eden and if anything seems dismissive when the God topic is mentioned to him through the radio, but maybe I'm misremembering (I need to see the film again). Also I wonder if Eden's religion is even christian anymore since it's been so long and they are mostly focused on keeping the tree alive at all costs. Just rambling over here tbh
I think I know why I love the idea of Simon on Erid first and bonding with Adrian before meeting Grace or Rocky.
Because then Adrian and Rocky can be that couple moving in together and desperately trying to get their cats to get along.
Rocky with his cuddly chatty orange cat who has so many brain cells they often negate each other, and is a maximum clinger. Currently recovering from scurvy.
And Adrian with their feral rescue, an unlucky black cat they found injured at the bottom of a metal dumpster. Who’s aloof and avoidant of everyone except Adrian, the Only One he loves and trust.
Rocky and Adrian are like those victims of the cat distribution system who have No Idea how to care for a cat, but they have been chosen so they gotta learn fast.
Ive seen a lot of Bloodymary Simon being an amputee (which is cool and all) but like…
What if when he ripped the one off another two grew in (like a hydra!) after he mutates!
Rocky would ragebait Grace about it too:
Rocky: Simon has five limbs! Like an Eridian!! Amaze amaze amaze!!!
Rocky: why can’t Grace be more like Simon, question?
Simon: yeah Grace, reject humanity, embrace Eridian

Grace is absolutely devastated the day he picks up his good luck quilt and realizes that it has a hole in it. It must have caught on something at some point, because there's a tear in the middle of it almost as long as his palm, right between the sea turtle and the fish. There's stuffing starting to leak out, and the stitches are only coming more undone the more he touches it. Heartbroken, he sets it aside in hopes that maybe Adrian or Rocky can take a look at it, and then heads off to class with a little less brightness in his smile than usual.
When he comes home and finds that the quilt is miraculously as good as new, he's absolutely gobsmacked. He pokes the area where the hole had been in open wonder, noting the meticulous stitches holding it back together. The thread is a different colour, and the stitches aren't machine perfect, which means someone fixed it by hand. But unless he's looking closely, it's impossible to tell. And given none of the Eridians have actually entered the biodome today, the only one who could have possibly done it is Simon.
Carrying his repaired quilt tucked up in his arms, Grace goes in search of Simon.
He finds him in the bedroom, in the midst of rolling up a ball of thread using his hand and his teeth, the remains of one of Grace's older, more worn shirts carefully separated out into each individual piece lying next to him on the bed. The new thread on the quilt matches the thread Simon is gathering from the shirt into a ball perfectly. There's no need for any more thread, now that the quilt is fixed, but Simon is still taking the time to ensure none of it is wasted. None of the fabric has been tossed aside.
It looks like it's painfully tedious work, and Grace can't even imagine how much harder it would have been to do one-handed. And yet Simon took the time to carefully pick out a shirt that wouldn't be missed, take it apart delicately enough to preserve the thread, dig through the supplies that had been brought down from the Hail Mary until he either found a sewing needle or was able to make one of his own, and then use said recovered thread and needle to painstakingly repair Grace's quilt so cleanly that he almost couldn't see the spot it had ripped.
It hadn't been necessary. They have other blankets. Grace didn't need his good luck quilt. It wasn't life or death, and Simon knew that.
But Simon had mended it anyways. For Grace.
I love you, is what Grace wants to say.
"I didn't know you could sew," is what comes out instead.
Simon looks up, spots Grace hovering in the doorway, and then gives Grace a careless shrug.
"It's a practical skill to have," he replies gruffly, as if it's no big deal.
"You fixed my quilt," Grace says quietly.
"Yeah." Simon's expression is a bit more wary now. "Didn't think you'd mind. It's your favourite, right?"
"Yes, it is," Grace confirms, heart fluttering a little in his chest. It was probably pretty obvious, given how much he curls up in it, but it's still nice to know that Simon had noticed. That he'd been paying close enough attention to Grace to have known that the quilt was important to him. "I'm...really grateful you fixed it. Thank you."
"It's nothing," Simon says.
He's wrong. It's everything.
I love you, Grace tries to say again.
But what comes out is, "Maybe you could teach me?"
Simon blinks at Grace in surprise. He clearly hadn't expected the question, given that it's usually Grace who teaches and Simon who learns. It must be a nice change of pace, because a small, bashful smile pulls up the corners of his lips. Grace feels a flush of victory run through him at the sight.
He may not have been able to say the words he wanted to, but at least he managed to make Simon smile.
"Yeah, alright," Simon drawls. He sets the thread down and pats the spot on the bed next to him. "Here. You can practice with these shirt pieces."
Feeling his own smile spreading across his face, Grace eagerly joins Simon on the bed, ready for his first sewing lesson.
I think that Grace's voice must be scary for the eridians. It just too flat. It can't do all the notes and tunes that the eridians use to communicate, there is no feelings in Grace's voice, at least not in their parameters, and this makes it harder for Grace to make himself understood, specially to eridians that do not spend a lot of time with him.
His jokes? Gone, most eridians think he is talking seriously, just kills any joke. His laugh? Uncanny, the eridians think at first that is some kind of cry due to pain. Snorts or exhalations used to express an emotion? mean nothing for the eridians who just do not produce that kind of sounds.
The only eridian that seem to uderstand Grace is Rocky, who had years to learn how to interpret him.
Extra + Imitation:
I have been reading about how humans can imitate sounds, and I think that Grace would try to replicate eridian dialect, but his tone would be the competly oppostite that he intended: He wants to sound funny? He sounds desesperate; He wants to tell something that make him sad? his tone is joyful He wants to sound postive? for the eridians sound like he is about to break in crying, or sarcastic.
Extra + Pebbles:
At the start the pebbles are scare of Mr.Grace. He tried to introduce himself in eridian at his first day, and he spoke as lively as he could, but the pebbles were so scare of the ommnious tone that he never did it again. He limits himself to whisper to his translator so they can't hear very well his human voice and it is Rocky's robotic/syntethic voice what reach to the pebbles.
The pebbles, feeling bad for making Mr. Grace have to hide his voice and after having got a more firm grip of english, urge him to try using his human voice more freely again, and Grace tries.
There is a lot of trial and error, but finally Grace founds a tone that the pebbles seem to like and is him intoning his words as if he were singing (In my mind it's a fusion of different types of singing and a bit of cetacean vocalization, like Dory from Finding Nemo.)
Extra Extra + Simon:
I just had the picture of Simon wondering around the biodome just to get to Grace's classroom and hear him sing to give his classes. Simon would have never guess that Grace is a good singer, he usually sings out of tune, more focused in feeling the lyric, but when it comes to talking with the pebbles, Grace is a pretty good singer.
I also think that since Simon's voice is more deep, it comes as more calm and relax for the eridians, while Grace's sounds about to volt.
