Defining Docs - Emily
This article defined documentaries and the audienceβs perceptions of them. I found this to be a great read. ββ¦Documentaries are about real lifeβ¦ They are portraits of real life, using real life as their raw material, constructed by artists and techniciansβ¦.β Editing, sound, and the selection of topics are all manipulations β good point. But just like anything, it is how you manipulate it. Documentaries are defined and redefined. It says that they do not have to be the complete truth. βThere are no rules, only decisions where to draw the line and how to remain consistentβ¦β This made me rethink the docs I have seen. How did it manipulate me? What are other things that are not featured that also take place? This article goes into detail about the history of docs. They started as βeducationalsβ or βinterest filmsβ, and developed into mainstream media and entertainment. Docs now are a billion dollar industry. The genres are widespread β negative or positive impacts/changes, government, drama, business or news. Styles are different just as any movie made. As are different elements β sound, special effects, camera angles, length and pace. Docs are just a different medium for films.
