I recently acquired several original issues of Exposure Sheet magazines and wanted to give the internet a good quality scan of this never-again used promotional image for Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp, which ended up being the third and final video game project produced by the Don Bluth Animation studio.
Beautiful illustration of Dirk the Daring and his wife the Princess Daphne cruising through space aboard the sentient Time Machine while the evil wizard Mordroc looks on (the game's story is somehow both tritely simple and hopelessly convoluted, but I love it).
The caption mentions the game's production having been placed "on hold" due to distribution deals falling through. Cinematronics, who had distributed the laser disc cabinets for the original Dragon's Lair (1983) and Space Ace (1984) had run into financial problems and was working through bankruptcy. The Time Warp game didn't get released into arcades until 1991 under the banner of The Leland Corporation, well after the hype for laser-disc video games had died down, making it hard for this quirky and expensive sequel to find its audience.
As a game, "Time Warp" leaves a lot to be desired, but as a piece of animation, it's one of my favorite things of all time. This promotional drawing might even be my favorite, far superior to the official cover art utilized on Digital Leisure's DVDs or the menus of "Dragon's Lair Trilogy."
more casey since i guess he has fans
I just had to turn this John Pomeroy commissioned "Dragon's Lair" drawing into a Christmas card parody. It's sort of a "Game Over/Bad Ending" inspired concept where the hero fails in his quest and the wicked wizard ends up getting his own "Happily Ever After" ending. At least this unlikely couple is making the most of it, and probably mailing these out to all the minions who helped make this possible.

Late night thoughts but have you noticed that between the ridge of their nose and top lip that they kind of compliment each other like a puzzle piece

Don Bluth is on record as saying Dirk the Daring and Princess Daphne are the perfect pair in large part due to the fact that they are on approximately the same level, mentally speaking. Descriptive idioms employed include "elevator didn't go all the way to the top floor" and "hasnāt got a whole deck of cards going on." These pages from Marvel's 1984 coloring & activity books seem to illustrate that sensibility.
The Fog Horn
With all the Foghorn Leghorn vs. Anime memes going around, I thought it might be worthwhile to reflect on a couple of poignant sections of this Ray Bradbury short story, which was the basis for the movie "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms", which likely inspired Godzilla.
When you spend your entire life stuck in the mud of the ocean's floor, your ears yearn for the sound of anything that sounds like a familiar voice: be it a Fog Horn echoing across the deep dark waters or the ramblings a giant Southern chicken calling out your clownin.
Two characters from different franchises with the exact same catchphrase meeting each other what would that look like?
I feel like I'm reaching on this one. Confession: I've never even seen Pee Wee's Big Adventure ConfessionX2: I actually like the DiC Legend of Zelda cartoon, unironically
Two characters from different franchises with the exact same catchphrase meeting each other what would that look like?
I thought of another, even though it's a throwback to the early 1990s, since both franchises seemingly distanced themselves from the catchphrase as they tried to keep current with cultural trends.
Two characters from different franchises with the exact same catchphrase meeting each other what would that look like?
First and only thing that came to my mind...

Itās a bit dark, but Karl had Dirk the Darling so much chewiness to do. š¼

Another "Puzzle Card" commission of six personalized sketch cards that I received earlier this year from talented Mexican artist Marco Carrillo based on the first Konami Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles LCD electronic handheld game (released 1989 in North America, I think). The concept of the original game revolves around the Turtle/Turtles (the "sprites" all resemble Leonardo using a katana) braving the dangerous traps and enemies on ground and underwater to save April O'Neil held captive in āShredderās Asylum.ā Marco expanded upon the concept to feature Raphael battling Mousers and Flap Jaws (top left), Leonardo with a defeated Foot Soldier (top middle), Shredder with April in the Asylum trap (top right), Michelangelo (bottom left), Foot Soldier getting destroyed by the "Turtle Cutter" trap (bottom middle), and Donatello acquiring a bomb (bottom right). Taken together, the puzzle has something of a relay system. For such a familiar video game to the generation of turtle-loving kids who grew up with the franchise, it's surprising to me how little love this thing gets in regards to fan-art tributes. Meanwhile, the infamous NES game is meme-worthy enough due to the "Dam Level" alone. But I'm glad I was able to help Marco bring this set to life! "Puzzle Card" commission of six sequential personalized sketch cards that I received earlier this year from talented Mexican artist Marco Carrillo based on the Dragon's Lair arcade games. Incredible amount of detail and energy he's able to (loving) cram onto those 2.5"x3.5" canvases! When the game just has to rub it in!
I might be in the minority, but I appreciated all those arcade-styled games that took the opportunity to make you think about the consequences of your failure when all credits and continues were exhausted. It could have been a blunt and absolute Game Over message or even an alternative āBad Ending.ā I think itās a decent motivation to come back later to improve your skills and at least progress a bit further than your last playthrough, until you finally achieve those breakthroughs and score the win!
Also, Iāve never had the chance to play an original arcade Dragonās Lair II: Time Warp machine or even the original ROM. Modern remastered versions of the game donāt have this Game Over screen.
