a possibly unpopular gripe

you know what bugs me so much? people who don’t work in education saying something like this:

School should teach life skills, like paying taxes or paying bills or how to balance a checkbook, and spend less time on stuff kids are never going to use, like algebra and history.

here’s why i hate it. those tasks, while very useful, require the ability to read basic directions and utilize tools like the internet to define basic terms. also, there are many resources that the average person can access to guide them through these processes. also, i actually do expect that when my students graduate, they can read and follow directions and access resources to learn new things. these learning skills are part of the capacity building that many schools employ when teaching their students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers.

also, like, you know who else complains that students never learn anything useful? STUDENTS. and students aren’t always the best judge of whether they are learning at all…have you ever heard a student say “we never do anything in here” even though you are building beautifully scaffolded lessons and your students are demonstrating growth and learning your content? yeah, me too.

meanwhile, we live in a country where lots of people think that the mainstream media just MAKES UP the news and that memes on Facebook are reliable sources of information, adults in charge of making decisions for the nation literally refuse to collaborate with one another, and people who sit in the highest offices demonstrate an utter disdain for critical thinking. we need close readers and critical thinkers. we need scientists and historians and people in all fields who value numbers and data, who aren’t afraid to ask tough questions, and who are willing to listen to voices vastly different from their own.

one might say that it’s the value of budgeting one’s money, or the cold hard reality of how taxes really affect ones earnings that really needs teaching, but to that i would say, they do learn those things. the republicans just passed a ridiculous tax bill. do you think kids across the country aren’t reading about this in their econ and government classes? do you think that in the push to provide access to college for students of all socioeconomic backgrounds that educators aren’t prepping students to understand the difficulties of taking care of one’s self?

this, to me, is just more of the disrespect and misunderstanding that plagues educators and the education systems, and it’s a lot of white noise that jams up the frequency when people who actually know what they are talking about…like people who work in schools…can speak about what their students are actually doing and what types of changes would make schools better.

if your highest aspiration for our young people is that they learn how to do something that a website will do for them free, them i would say it’s not teachers who are failing kids.

My two favorite releases this year were It and Wonder Woman. I finally got the chance to watch Arrival, which I loved predictably.

5. TV show of the year?

The Handmaid’s Tale exceeded my expectations though I will admit that watching Bruce Miller accept an Emmy somewhat soured the experience for me.

We had two teachers quit at the end of this last semester for reasons mostly related to mental health. One teacher was new to the profession. The other teacher had three years of experience. It’s been on my mind a lot lately.

National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day is October 2

National Education Support Professionals Day (includes paras and bus drivers) is November 15

School Counselors’ Week is Feb 5-9

Administrative Professionals Day is April 25

National School Nurses’ Day is May 9

I always include them in my teacher appreciation week gift-giving.

This year has been going better than I expected.

At the start of the year, my interim principal put me on an improvement plan. An improvement plan is essentially a document that they give you before you get fired. It was an uncomfortable situation, but not particularly stressful. They wanted me to work with the teacher from my failed co-teaching relationship last year, and I refused. They kept saying, “What do you need to work with her?” And I would say, “I don’t need anything. You need to hire an ELI for the sixth grade team.”

All of this happened because they stretched me across two grade levels, which never should have happened.

I don’t particularly like my role as ELI. It’s never been a role that I find particularly effective, and it was the role that I was trying to avoid getting into ESL/EFL education. I wanted a different structure, wrote proposals to work in a co-teaching model, etc. Despite these hangups, it’s been a decent year so far. No more 4am mornings.

But I always roll my eyes and when people act like it’s a radical, novel concept for teachers to work on making lessons engaging and relevant, or to actually care about the students. It’s an especially pretentious theme in memoirs and nonfiction texts… and in some humans.

EnglishED: Second-Language Teaching Methods

Grammar-Translation Model

1840s to 1940s. Analyze and memorize rules of grammar. Vocab lists and translations. Everyone hates this now. Don’t learn how to communicate/ create unique utterances

Audiolingual Method

1930s to 1970s. Memorization and drills. Based in behaviorism/ the idea that language is just a habit. Don’t do this anymore because little progress towards real communication/ boring af.

Natural Approach

Terrell uses Krashen. Focus on comprehensible input in a safe environment. Move through stages of development/ process like a computer. Mixed results.

Communicative Language Teaching

1980s to today. Goal is Hyme’s communicative competence. Essentials = interaction, language production, authentic experiences.

Content-Based Instruction

Common today. Use content area as a context for language learning. Some teachers not trained for content, others not trained for language. Can be great or bad.

Whole Language, Multiple Intelligences, Cooperative Learning

Top-down approach. Focus on strengths. Small groups to help each other and have input.

Critical Pedagogy

Freire. Against idea that teachers deposit information for kids (banking model). Wanted students to be liberated and to talk about social issues. Teachers should encourage risks.
