I’m sure all of you have heard about today’s story, but still, I insist of telling it once again.
Today, 19th of July 2015, 3x World Surfing Champion Mick Fanning was attacked by a Great White shark during the final of the J-Bay Open in South Africa. He’s OK, the shark only bit his leash.
Fanning fought the shark by punching it, then he got rid of his board and swam away from it. Fellow competitor and countryman, Julian Wilson, swam as fast as he could to try to help Mick. Hats off to him for his amazing bravery act that I’m sure most people wouldn’t be courageous to do.
The water patrol rescued Fanning and Wilson and cleared the line up deeming the ocean as “unsaved”.
Many believe, including myself, the shark didn’t want to attack Fanning in particular. If it wanted, it would have done it in a second. But still, I cannot even imagine the thoughts of the people he loved going through their minds at that time, including Mick’s.
Times like these make you reflect on so many things. How it all can end in a second. Mick said “I don’t even mind competing ever again, I’m just glad I’m alive”. The competitors split the prize.
Today was tough and no one knows what tomorrow will bring, but for now, let us regroup. Mick, Julian and the water patrol, you’re all heroes and your actions will never be forgotten.

Pete Fecteau spent 40 hours configuring a monumental mosaic of Martin Luther King Jr. made entirely out of Rubik’s Cubes called Dream Big. With a computer generated draft as his blueprint, the determined creator used 4,242 Rubik’s Cubes to construct the 18’ 6” x 9’ 8” piece that, once completed, weighed about half a ton.
Dream Big has marked a turning point in Fecteau’s artistic career, garnering him much attention. Interestingly, as a designer by day, Fecteau never saw the Rubik’s Cube mosaic as a “career move,” it was just a “crazy idea” he could not ignore. “It’s been a weird project,” he told us. “There were many times where I’d want to give up and then the next day I’d get a call that forced me back on the horse. I kind of feel like it was willing itself to be made. I can’t say I’m surprised by the attention. When I first looked at the finished product I was in as much awe as everyone else. I’m very happy to have this make people think about what’s possible.”
oh my fucking god that’s amazing
