結 - 맺을 결 / 상투 계 - conclusion

Translation of the words from above with a few examples:

맺다 - to close, to form, to contract (계약을 맺다 - to sign a contract; 뒤끝을 맺다 - to put an end to, to settle)

모으다 - to collect, to garner, to save up, to gather, to raise (돈을 모으다 - to collect money;  힘을 모으다 - to work together/ to cooperate;  끌어모으다 - to attract, to engage)

묶다 - to tie, to lash, to fasten ( 꼭 묶다 - to fasten tight, 꽁꽁 묶다 - to tie up) 매다 - to tie, to knot, to lace ( 개를 매다 - to chain a dog,  끈을 매다 - to tie the strings, 늦추 매다 - to tie (a belt) loosely) (but it turns out it can also mean “to put on, to buckle up”)

꾸미다 - to decorate, to ornament something, to come up with (몸을 꾸미다 - to dress up, to adorn oneself;  일을 꾸미다 - to make a plan/ form a sheme;  얼굴을 꾸미다 - to make up (the face)) 짓다 - to make, to build, to construct, to compose ( 짝을 짓다 - to pair up, to form;  특징 짓다 - to mark, to characterize;  집을 짓다 - to build a house/home;  노래를 짓다 - to compose a song;  글을 짓다 - to write a poem)

다지다 - to stomp, to lay, to brace oneself (also to mince, to chop) (땅을/ 터를 다지다 - to harden the ground; 고기를 다지다 - to finely chop up or to mince the meat) 단단히 하다 - to firm up, to solidify, to be firm (doing something ‘단단히’ is basically doing it fast, firmly, effectively)

엇걸리게 하다 - to be on the cross (엇걸리다 - to be made in a diagonal loop;  엇걸리는 상황 - mixed situation)

굽다 - to roast, to grill, to bake, to toast (it also can mean to bend, curve or to be crooked) ( 구워먹는 고기/음식 - meat/food that is eaten roasted) 구부러지다 - to bend, to crook, to wrap

굽히다 - to bend, to change, to give up (자설을 굽히다 - to change one’s views; 자설을 굽히지 않다 - to stick to one’s views;  허리를 굽히다 - to bend the body (허리 - waist)) 구부리다 - to bend, to crook

막다 - to block, to close, to fill in (”문 막아! - Shut the door!”) 못하게 하다 - basically to make something or someone unable to be/do etc. in some way (남을  끽소리 못하게 하다 - to beat an other person to a pulp) (끽소리 - yell)

엉기다 - to clot, to get tangled (엉겨 붙다 - to stick together)

A few examples of frequently used words with the same hanja (結):

결과 - result

결국 - finally, eventually

결혼 - wedding

결론 - conclusion

결부 - bond

Wow, so this was a long one.. if you have managed reading it all (and even memorized a few things) then you definitely deserve a big thumbs up!

Hi everyone!

I know... it has been quite  a while since I last updated  and I am sorry about that. 2017 was a year full of changes and turbulances, ups and downs, marked with tears of happiness and sorrow and this was true for the K-pop community as well: I remember how happy and excited I was hearing about the news of BTS going to the BBMAs and then to the AMAs where they finally got a chance to perform one of their new hit songs DNA. Also there were disbandments (f.e. Sistar) just as fortunate comebacks (f.e. Highlight) to make us remember that the music world is a complex and constantly changing and serious business highly influenced by fandoms and album/MD/ticket sales (among other factors like talent, pure luck and more).

But at the end of the day we must remember that these idols are humans just like ourselves with their own insecurities and problems even though it is more or less hidden behind smiles and bright outfits in order to show a ‘good image’ toward the public.

Anyone who likes K-pop probably knows about the sad news about SHINee’s Jonghyun by now. I was so shocked hearing about his death last week. First I thought that it must be some kind of stupid prank.. or at least I deeply hoped it was. This tragedy is a very sad reminder for taking depression and other mental illnesses much more seriously not only in South Korea, but everywhere else as well. (I also kind of hope that this tragedy can be a wakeup call esp. for the entertainment industry to build a system where not only the outside appearance, but also the inside is nurtured and taken care of, where these young individuals get a chance to freely talk about their problems with professionals.) Jonghyun’s death hurt my heart in so many levels that it actually took me a while for being able to write about it here. But I knew I had to write about it sometime not only as a fan of K-pop, but also as a citizen of this strange planet called Earth, where we all live, love, get hurt and dream about something better to come.

You inspired so many of us, you worked hard with great passion, you did really well, Rest in Peace Kim Jonghyun!

I am back again with a requested post to show you what I use for learning Korean. These are not all the things I have used so far, but those I use the most nowadays and/or like the most:

Books:

Korean Grammar in Use Series (they are the best and widely popular for a reason, one of those books every Korean language learner should own) 500 Basic Korean Verbs (one of my favorite purchases) Essential Korean Grammar (I was a bit sceptic at first but the truth is that this book can be really helpful esp. for beginners and intermediate learners or those who prefer a more ‘English-heavy’ Korean grammar book)

Essential Korean for Business Use or Business Korean by Yonsei (or basically any other Business Korean language book out there can do the job and save your time; I really recommend to buy one esp. if you want to go and work in a Korean company)

Inside Korea (great bilingual book with tons of information about Korea more for the intermediate/advanced learners)

Korean Made Easy for Everyday Life (The KME books are great for self-learners who prefer to learn from a textbook instead of online sources. Out of the three I own I tend to use the 3rd (Everyday Life version) from time to time.)

+1: Read as much as you can! News on Naver? A full Korean novel you found at a local bookstore or on Amazon? Go for it! The more you read the more you will be able to understand and the faster you learn. It can also help to improve your writing skills ‘til some point.

Here comes a list of useful words you can find on most Korean beauty product and sample packagings:

화장품 - cosmetics 기능성 - functional 사용법 - way of use / how to use 증정용 - “for presentation” so in this case “not for sale” 스킨케어 - skin care 내용물 - contents 마지막 단계 - last step 피부 - skin 촉촉한 - moist 부드럽다 - soft (부드럽게- softly) 발라줍니다 - apply 피부결을 따라 - (by) following the skin’s texture 손을 깨끗이 씻은 후 - after washing your hands clean/thoroughly

슬리핑 팩 - sleeping pack 핸드 크림 - hand cream etc. (as far as I know, product types  - like these two examples above - are usually written by using the English word simply written with hangeul, so if you can read the Korean alphabet and speak English, you won’t have any trouble figuring out what type of product you are looking at ;))
