I’ve decided I’m gonna stop being shy and I’m gonna start posting the stuff I make!!

This is a personal-size carry-on bag for traveling. It is self-drafted, but it was heavily inspired by a By Annie pattern, I think the Divide and Conquer bag? But I wanted to try for myself and I’m SO proud of how it turned out!

The bag opens flat. It has two internal pockets (one on each side), one external pocket on the front, and two internal “pages” that each have a padded pocket on one side and a mesh pocket on the other. On the back of the bag it has a sleeve so it’ll slide over the handle of a rolling suitcase and hold the bag on top. The straps are both adjustable so it can be carried over the shoulder.

This is my second attempt making a personal carry-on like this. My first attempt was flimsy and the straps were not secure enough for the weight i pack into this kind of bag. (I hate paying and worrying abt checked luggage so I try to only take carry-ons when I travel). This one is SUPER sturdy and comfortable to carry, I feel super confident I’d be comfortable carrying it through a crowded airport!

I made this bag for my apparel technology class final. I call it the Lantern Bag. The final version took about 40 hours, but counting R&D it was probably more like 100. The outer fabric is 8 oz 100% cotton twill with computerize machine embroidery along the slashes, and the inner fabric is a horrible poly satin. The structural interlining is a spun poly about 1 cm thick which I think turned out much better than the buckram I was planning on using. The lighting component is 2 meters of EL wire in the area behind the satin, powered by a battery pack inside the bag. I wish I had chosen yellow instead of white, because the white looks very blue. It is inspired, of course, by the classic Chinese lantern and European slashing and puffing. Here’s a picture of the interior:
