Absolutely do NOT think about Billy, on the brink of death after breaking free from the Mind Flayer, crying as he bleeds out about how he killed Heather and this person and that person and he didn’t mean to, he promises, please don’t tell my dad, I’m so sorry, and El and Max grabs his hands as Joyce pushes some hair away from his face and tells him it’s not his fault, it was his hands but not his mind and not his heart and that yeah he’s an asshole punk but he’s a kid and he’s still good, you’re good Billy, you broke free you saved the day, you saved us all. max and el are both crying, faces flushed and cut by tear tracks, el murderous and max sad, thinking about california and neil and how mean Billy can be but he doesn’t deserve to die, goddamnit, and Billy cries silent tears and stares up at the ceiling, all dreamy and sleepy as he his injuries make him wince with every rattled breath, Joyce Byers stroking his hair and Eleven and Max holding his hands, and then, as his eyes starts fluttering closed, he looks over at Joyce and smiles, so so soft and sweet, and a little bit confused, and says, “mom?” and Joyce starts crying a little, and her voice shakes when she says, “yeah, honey?” and billy, though his words are slurring, mumbles, “i love you” and Joyce breaks a little, cradling his face and kissing his forehead like she is his mom, hoping to lead him to a peaceful sleep when she whispers, “i love you, baby, thank you for everything” into his hair as he closes his eyes, sees the bright light of the California sun and feels the heat on his skin, and goes home.
