A strongly worded column by a former Quebec premier and pro-sovereigntist reveals the extent of divides within the Parti Québécois over its proposed charter of values.
Jacques Parizeau, a decades-long and high-profile backer of the sovereignty movement, wrote a column in Thursday morning's issue of the French newspaper Le Journal de Montréal that criticizes his own party.
Parizeau āserved as premier fromĀ September 1994Ā to January 1996,Ā and nearly led Quebec to independence in 1995.
HeĀ famously blamed the failed QuebecĀ referendum onĀ "money" and the "ethnic vote."
Despite his history, ParizeauĀ had harsh words for the current PQ government, sayingĀ it goes too far with its proposed ban on overt religious symbols for employees in the public sector.Ā Ā

Canadians are winning all the prizes:Ā B.C. teenās battery-free flashlight wins her a top prize in Google global science fair
A Victoria teenager has won one of the top prizes in Googleās annual global science fair.
Ann Makosinskiās battery-free flashlight, which is powered by the heat of her hands, was chosen as the best project created by a student aged 15 or 16.
Makosinski told the Vancouver Sun that the inspiration for her project was a friend in the Philippines who failed at school because she had no light to study by once it got dark. Her experience left the 15-year-old Makosinski determined to find a way to power a light without batteries or electricity.

A team of McGill MBA students pitching a plan to transform insects into a viable food source has won a prestigious prize that came with $1-million to help their project along.
The students ā Mohammed Ashour, Gabriel Mott, Shobhita Soor, Jesse Pearlstein and Zev Thompson ā were announced as winners of the Hult Prize competition on Monday in New York City. The prize, presented by former U.S. president Bill Clinton, is awarded as support for business plans designed to do social good. The competition was held as part of the Clinton Global Initiativeās annual meeting.
The challenge posed to students pursuing the Hult Prize this year was to try to find solutions toward securing food for undernourished communities.
The teamās business plan includes plans to distribute āmicro-livestockā growing kits that will allow slum-dwellers to grow insects in sanitary conditions all-year round, when currently many insects ā for example crickets in Mexico ā are only available for two or three months in the year.Ā Over the last six months, a McGill quintet has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, journeyed across three continents and significantly altered its business model in a quest to win the prize.

A horrific crash between an Ottawa transit bus and a Via passenger train has left six people dead, dozens injured and many residents shaken and searching for answers as to what went wrong.
The OC Transpo Route 76 bus was heading for downtown Ottawa Wednesday morning, travelling north along the Transitway, the dedicated road for the city's buses.
Shortly before 9 a.m., the bus collided with Via Train 51, which came from Montreal and was heading west to Toronto, at a rail crossing near Woodroffe Avenue and Fallowfield Road.
