I wanted to post these 2 scenes from each spirit (death and life) because they stood out so much to me and left me thinking after finishing watching the movie.. there’s something about the bittersweet feelings that both life and death bring, how both life and death can be happy and sad things at once, since everything comes with a price; “you never know how long you have with someone until they’re gone”; we become aware of this the most when we love someone, or something, the second we realize and fear that nothing is infinite. and the sorrow will be great and crushing.

“I only wished to bring you joy” is heartbreaking considering this is a personification of life; which means they have feelings, thoughts, emotions; life as a concept brings us endless possibilities to do anything and achieve anything we want, to love as much as we can, to endure suffering as much as we can, to enjoy as much as we can. to live as much as we can. and this is confirmed by geppetto’s answer to this: “and you did. you did bring me joy. such terrible, terrible joy.” this scene alone made the entire movie for me, personally.

god the way pinocchio is one of THE defining examples of the nonhuman character who aspires to become human archetype but guillermo del toro turned around and said actually no. fuck that. he doesn't become human. he doesn't become a real boy. he doesn't need to. he's already capable of so much love and he's already got people who love him the way he is and that makes him real enough and human enough. i am unwell.

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is quite the great example old fashioned fairy tale adapted to film, fantastic visuals with memorable characters and pretty good songs to hum along to, mixed in with a pretty morbid yet different look on life, death and mortality.

Also, Cate Blanchett voiced a monkey in this film. Not a important detail but it was definitely a shock seeing that in the credits.
