Atticus Flint

𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧:

“Lucky me,” Mereia replied. She shifted her weight, almost considering not asking the question on her mind. “How long will it take to fix it and…make the adjustments?” she finally asked. She knew it was rude to rush him, but she’d be damned if she had to train without her fire. Surely her classmates would tear her to bits. Or maybe not…heroes were supposed to be kind… It didn’t really matter. She hated being without it for too long.

     “The rest of the afternoon...maybe. But it will definitely be finished today” he explained, the fast deadlines and expectations being nothing new to Atticus. Training here at UA was full on, at all times, but that was why the best heroes came from this place. He didn’t want her to be hindered without her equipment, so he would make an effort to work as quickly and efficiently as he could. 

Ellie beamed at him, nodding in agreement. “Oh, you draw too? That’s so cool,” she said. “Do you have a bunch of sketch books, or do you draw digitally now? The things people can do with an iPad and an Apple Pen are amazing.” She smiled back at him when he started to smile. “Oh, well, Ghost messes up technology,” she said. “That’s my quirk. Ghost Image.”

     “It’s not anything to shout about or anything like that - Just basic sketches for the support stuff that I design...it looks like what it’s supposed to but...yeah nothing special” Atticus explained, not wanting her to get too excited. “I started with sketchbooks but...digital drawing is just so much easier. And better for the environment, I suppose, too” he chuckled. “Oh? That’s really interesting...is it like a whole separate entity or?”

 “Don’t worry Casanova, I’m not confessing my undying love for you or anything.” She chuckled after seeing his reaction. She hadn’t meant to make him short circuit. “I just…well…Okay you can’t tell Honey. She’d kill me. But there’s this guy ….i really really like. But I can’t tell you who. Or anyone really. Cause it could get us in alot of trouble.”

     He couldn’t help but snort as she teased him by calling him Casanova when he was sure he could be more accurately described as anything but. Although he would never acknowledge it, plenty of people would be interested in him if he would only summon up the courage to shoot his shot. He didn’t mind being alone so much, though. It gave him more time to focus on his craft. “That’s..” he wrinkled his nose slightly in the same way he typically did when he couldn’t make something make sense for his super brain. “That’s not comforting, Eevs...I know you’re more than capable of taking care of yourself and everything but...you’re not putting yourself in any danger, right?”

“...What’s going on, Eevs?” Atticus asked, his confusion clear on his face as he turned to look at her. “I love you, you know that...just...you’re like my sister or something, you know?” he explained. As far as he’d known, Evie had felt the same way, so he could only assume she was just asking hypothetically. “In another life, I don’t know, maybe. You’re a total catch, Miss Clover....why do you ask?”

“Do you ever feel worthless? I-I mean I’m not saying that you are, not at all, I would never say such a thing it’s just that, um, well, I read this really awesome article that explains that almost all of the elements that reside within the human body were made in a star that most likely passed through several supernovas so, I guess by the time that we’re, you know, here...we’ve already been through so many incredible things that nothing we do here really...matters. On the flip side of that, however, if it’s not going to matter anyways...why not go for whatever we want? The worst we’re going to do is fail, right? I just um, found it really..interesting” he smiled shyly, realizing he had set himself off into a ramble. 

“Look man, Love me or hate me, just choose one, please. All of this back and forth is starting to give me whiplash” he sighed, inviting himself to sit beside the other, but losing all of the confidence in his words as soon as he turned to look at him. “Is what I would have said to that guy in my course if I, you know, wasn’t going to have to sit behind him for the entire rest of the year I-I mean..talk about awkward” he chuckled nervously, shaking his head. “Oh, right. Let’s try that again...hi”

𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐞𝐧:

His knowledge of the basis of her equipment shocked Mereia and it showed on her face. Truthfully, he knew more about it off hand than she did after years of using it. It was almost unsettling, but he was a support student…this was the kind of stuff he studied after all. “Right,” she said, the vowel dragging on a little to long. As quickly as she could, she shook the fog from her mind and focused back in on his question. “Yes, please. This thing breaks too often…I’m not exactly gentle with it.”

     He couldn’t deny that seeing her expression shift as he used his quirk was extremely satisfying. Being smart was his entire thing, he supposed, but he was used to being underestimated. “They push pretty hard in the hero courses here....I’m not too surprised that it’s broken at least once or twice. You’re just lucky to have caught me on a relatively free day, I suppose”

Ellie giggled. “I’ve read a few comics,” she said. “I like how much the art style can differ even in the same series, when they go from one artist to another.” She smiled and shrugged. “I think bravery can be shown in a lot of ways,” she said. “Just like there’s a lot of ways to be a hero.” She smiled brightly at him. “Me too!” she said. “I’m in the hero program.”

     “Oh, totally. The art is amazing..I wish I could draw like that, honestly. I do okay with sketches for my designs and things but...it’s not Picasso or anything, you know?” Atticus explained, trying to hold back on asking her which ones she had read. “I never really thought about it that way...but you’re right” he began to smile. “Ah, it makes sense now. I’m from the support course but...I don’t recall making anything for you”

Gwen narrowed her eyes at him as if she was trying to read his mind. She couldn’t, obviously, that wasn’t her quirk. But it was just so confusing. “Why are you being so nice to me?” she asked concerned. “Is that your quirk?” 

     “Why wouldn’t I be nice to you?” he felt himself frown, head tilting slightly as he looked over at her. “Oh, no. I just have a super brain, I suppose you could say. Once I learn something once...I never really forget it” he explained in the simplest way he knew how. “Atticus. It’s nice to meet you”

“never” Evie smiled, ruffling his hair before taking out her phone. Her fingers flew as she ordered a smoothie for each of them. Her expression mirrored his as he looked over the tech. Atticus always came through for her, she was always worried if she was using him to some extent. “is there anything i can do? get you?” she asked.

     “You’re too sweet” he smiled warmly, placing the piece of tech carefully into his bag for now. “I have another class later so I can take a look at it after that and get it back to you, I’ll be as quick as possible” he promised. “What’s new with you, anyways? How was your summer?”

The Public Eye: What sells a hero? course recently gave out projects to their class and Iaso had gotten assigned a hero whose quirk was plant related, leading the brunette on a rabbit hole and currently three chapters into a dendrology book, wandering around campus examining every tree she passes by. As she stared into an oak, taking note of its structure, a voice caught her attention from below and without hesitation, she answered with a question “What aspect of trees do you notice first and what do you think is the strongest?”

     “Are you looking for an educated and factual response or my actual opinion?” Atticus asked, raising his brow. He tried not to turn on his quirk unless he really needed to, knowing that it was likely annoying when he continued to list off all of the knowledge inside his brain but sometimes it could just happen. He’s been working on that. “I notice the leaves...but they’re definitely not the strongest part of a tree, by far”

 “I have villain psych last,” she informed him. She paused a moment, considering leaving. She sighed. Of course…maybe he had a point. He would be more useful informed and she was a new student yet. She couldn’t fault him for not knowing. “You know what a flint and steel is, right? The bracelet, it’s the flint and the steel is on my costume. It’s nothing fancy.” She didn’t need anything too fancy, not when this worked perfectly fine. She’d been using this method since she was a child, with a few minor changes here and there as she learned what worked best.

     “Got it” he nodded gently, reaching into his pocket for a pen before scribbling that down on the back of his hand. He wouldn’t forget, but he often found that this reassured others that were less familiar with the inner workings of his brain that he would, in fact, remember. “Flint is a sedimentary cryptocrystalline form of the mineral quartz, categorized as the variety of chert that occurs in chalk or marly limestone. Historically, it’s been recorded to have been used widely to make stone tools and start fires. It occurs chiefly as nodules and masses in sedimentary rocks, such as chalks and limestones.” Atticus exhaled a sigh. “Steel is an alloy of iron with typically a few percent of carbon to improve its strength and fracture resistance compared to iron, need I go on?” he rose his brows. Many things could be implied about him, he was sure. Being stupid was not one of them. “You know, while I have it I could probably look into redesigning it...making it less likely to break? It’s kind of what we do” he offered a weak shrug.
