Theyâre an unfamiliar face, and yet Jean-Luc knows instantly who heâs dealing with. Or rather, what. Heâs only met a few others from the Q Continuum, and he prefers to deal with only one ( or rather, none of them, but he rarely had that luxury ). But these days, life has been more on the dull side. At least, it had been, until just a few weeks ago.
âYou donât know me,â he says, hesitantly, curiously. âBut your kind claim to know everything, so Iâm sure thatâs the same thing to you.â He canât help it --- he has to ask. Heâll kick himself for it later if he doesnât. âIâm sure he would, so why not come say it himself.â Jean-Luc crosses his arms. A defense. âWhat is your business here. STAR TREK: PICARD S01E10 | âEt in Arcadia Ego, Part 2â
& RIOS. vidatragicaâ
While Picard isnât exactly the kind of man he wishes to follow any more he also wonât turn down his money. The reason doesnât really matter to him as long as he gets the money in the end. âVery crafty.â His friend has a quick mind and way with people heâd never been able to get.Â
âWhy rely when you have the means to do it yourself? You canât betray yourself.â Thereâs only a handful of people that he would fight for. It seems that this mission is doing nothing but adding to that. âI can see why they gave you command. Always thinking of everyone else.â
And it doesnât matter to Jean-Luc why Rios accepts the job. Morals, money, boredom --- itâs simply not important. ( Heâd like it to be, of course. On the Enterprise his crew followed him out of duty and loyalty --------- and he knows thereâs none of that here now. Not with Rios, not with Raffi. )Â
âIf you live your life paranoid that youâre going to be betrayed by everyone, youâll never be able to just live.â His words are stern, but not lecturing. Itâs just an observation, more than anything else. âI think you know that, though.â As is that. âThere are more reasons,â he says ( bragging? not from his point of view. ) âBut thatâs an important part of it.â Of course, heâs not really in command here. Itâs been a long time since heâs been on a starship and not been in command.
â There are times when men of good conscience cannot blindly follow orders. âÂ
jean - luc picard, written by eros. | est. 2015 | read rules & aboutÂ
& LARIS. fontcroireâ
âTo tell me that you died?â That sheâd been right. Laris had warned him before heâd left that heâd get himself killed and what had happened? Granted it might not have been how she expected butâ Laris cared, she was concerned and honestly the notion terrified her a little. Her feelings on synthetic life werenât as strong as some in her species, she was typically content to ignore rather than try to destroy it but for something like thisâ
âIt isnât it still being you that Iâm concerned about.â The yelling itself might have subsided but sheâs still not calm, though what did he expect with the news he had? âBut that it happened.â And that one day sheâd have to hear that same news again. Besides, what would this all mean for him? For the Federation? For his life?
She had been right. Jean-Luc has to give het credit for that, though itâs a bit of an ego-check. But then again, hasnât this whole mission? He resists the urge to snip back at her, despite the fact that heâs long since accepted the reality of his new situation. Heâs had time to sit with it. She hasnât.Â
At least she isnât yelling. Though she has every right to, of course. âI know,â he says, an attempt to explain. âAnd you were right, if thatâs any satisfaction.â He smiles, a little wryly. He had expected it too. And like Laris, he didnât intend to come back either. Yet here he is. âBut Iâm stronger now. My.... health is better.â He reaches out, takes her hands in his. âMy dear Laris. I am grateful for you care, and your concern. I will continue to need your support, if you will offer it.â

@fontcroireâ / you didnât ask for this but here, take it anyway
âLaris, Iâm telling you, Iâm alright! See? No harm done. Itâs still me.â Jean-Luc isnât.... surprised that sheâs taking news of his death and subsequent resurrection particularly hard, but he had hoped she would be a little more reasonable, like Zhaban ( who had immediately closed the door on him and refused to speak to him for an hour, and then came out and hugged him so tightly he thought he would suffocate ). The yelling is getting them nowhere, but he understands Larisâ anger. âAnd I came back, because I wanted to see you. Wanted to tell you in person.â
& RIOS. cristobalriosâ
He would admit Picard couldâve been a little more observant, but he didnât hold it against him. He couldnât have known what Soji was to him⌠He still doesnât. How could any of them know that the Ibn Majid would figure into all of this? Did all of Starfleetâs conspiracies somehow tie into this mission?
â⌠I appreciate that. But you couldnât have known. And I had no idea Sylar wouldââ A pause. âHe gets protective. Iâm sorry. Iâm glad youâre alright.â He told him.
âIâm still trying to wrap my head around all this.â He said. âItâs a lot to take in.â With Agnesâ betrayal and⌠Attempt to neutralize the tracker that nearly killed her (whether it was a suicide attempt or not was not an issue he should tackle at the moment), Sojiâs arrival and all the issues that come with that, the connection between Soji and Jana and the Ibn Majid, and now the added tensions between Sylar and Zhaban⌠Everything was piling on top of each other. âHow is Soji doing?â
Perhaps he couldnât have known, but Jean-Luc still feels guilty. This might be Riosâ ship, but itâs his crew, in every way, and he continues to feel the fierce protectiveness over them that he always had on the Enterprise. Theyâre his people, and he has a responsibility to them. To keep them safe. To keep them happy. To keep them from feeling like this mission is a waste.
And theyâre close. So close now. Soji is safe, sheâs with them, but this is far from over. âI understand,â Jean-Luc says, tearing his thoughts away from his worries and back to the present issue. âItâs a good thing Zhaban was here instead of Laris,â he adds, only slightly joking. âI fear she would not have stopped.âÂ
But all that is not really the point, or the most important part of it all, is it? The mystery, which continues to unfold more and more at every turn, is looming. Ominous. âI know,â he says, in a way that isnât quite comforting, or reassuring, but thereâs solidarity nonetheless. Itâs been a lot for him to take in as well. Heâs been operating on autopilot for weeks now, and heâs certain that one day soon heâs going to crash and itâs all going to go spiraling out of his grasp.
He can only hope that this newfound crew will be there to catch him when he does.Â
âSheâs still in shock, I think.â Just another thing to feel guilty about. âBut sheâs doing better. Sheâs.... determined. She wants to make things right, even if it isnât her responsibility.â He smiles, distantly. âShe reminds me so much of her father.â
& BARCLAY.  ltbroccoliâ
Thatâs⌠certainly a lot to take in. For a long moment, all Reg can do is stare and blink stupidly at his former captain, trying to process all of that. âO-oh,â he finally manages, in a slightly strangled sounding tone. âThatâs, uh⌠thatâs⌠uhâŚâ
Realizing they should probably continue this conversation a bit more private, he starts walking towards the door to the outside, gently motioning Picard to walk with him. âA synth, here on Earth? She must be terrifiedâŚâ He couldnât imagine anything else, living on a world whose people had been conditioned to fear and distrust you for over a decade. âAnd I know the Federation isnât what it used to be, but â collaborating with the Tal Shiar?â Nervously, he added, âDo you have any proof of this?â
Heâs surprised him. Of course he has. Just like heâs surprised Laris, and Zhaban, and now Doctor Jurati. If this is Barclayâs reaction, Jean-Luc loathes to think what Admiral Clancy will say when he heads to Starfleet to deliver this same message.Â
But of course, he trusts the man in front of him now, far more than he does the CNC. Just as he does any officer whoâs served with him. So Jean-Luc follows him outside, and this almost feels normal, almost like being back on the Enterprise, in a way thatâs both reassuring and melancholic. âSheâs dead,â he says bluntly, because thereâs no other way to deliver that news. âShe had no idea what she was, but the Tal Shiar killed her.â He stops, looking at the other man with a fierce and serious expression. âI saw them, with my own eyes. There is no world in which this could happen without Federation knowledge and cooperation.â
& SHEILA. lostmojaveâ
She looks much more at ease once she finds a more comfortable position, jokingly pouting before halfheartedly knocking over her king. Playful banter was always welcomed, though initially she hadnât expected it from a prim-and-proper captain such as himself.Â
â So you have to revert back to using money? At least itâs not a completely foreign concept, I suppose⌠But still! I just think itâs so neat that Earth progressed past itâ did it make much of an impact onâ uhâ socio-economic disparities? I imagine it leveled out the playing field for Earthlings at the time. â While she had Ed-e for company whilst adrift in space, there was only so much conversation the two could maintain. Three years in, theyâd almost run out of small talk ( or small beeps, in Ed-eâs case ). So when the pair encountered the Enterprise, the possibilities for new, stimulating conversations were almost infinite.Â
Sheilaâs brows furrow slightly at his comment, a surprised little smile forming. â So you stopped? But thatâs how you improve! Although⌠I imagine Mr. Data can come off a bit blunt with his critiques. â The last part is accompanied by a giggle, suddenly realising how damaging such constructive-criticism could be for a new artist.
â Oh, I see how it is, â her grin grows wide once more, a competitive gleam in her eye. â Alrightâ name the game, I guarantee I can beat you this time! âÂ
âYes, oddly Iâve found myself having to pay for things far more often than one might imagine. Many other worlds still rely on money as a means of economic stimulus and social structure. Which is... surprising, only because to think that Earth managed to negotiate unification to this extent contradicts everything that history leading up to that point would dictate. But the Federation has always made it clear that worlds which still use money as a means of social identification and hierarchy are not below us, or any less developed. The societies simply function in different ways.âÂ
Jean-Luc laughs quietly at the comments. âYes, well. I can always trust him to be honest, which is more than anyone can say about most people. Iâve learned to not take his comments too personally, but also to trust his judgement.â He shrugs. âBesides, live performance art was always more fascinating to me than visual art. There are some things weâre just not cut out for.â He doesnât sound too bothered by it, all things considered.
âI think thatâs enough games for one day,â he says, standing up and stretching. âIâd hate to see you lose again.â He looks at her out of the corner of his eye. Heâs always found it funny how physical board and card games have made a resurgence ever since the invention of the holodeck. Almost as if humans are not full willing to let go of their more ancient roots. He is no different -- chess is always welcome, and his crew is fond of poker. But just as he prefers paper books to holonovels so many others would rather play a board game than run a simulation. âCommander Riker is giving a performance in Ten-Forward. I thought we might go show our support.â

âThis whole mission was because you were dying, wasnât it? Are you going to leave again now that this is over, and youâre safe? Go back into hiding and leave me alone again. Would you have ever come for me if you didnât think you were about to die? Did you ever think about me before you were faced with having to think back on all your âbiggest regretsâ and try to âfix themâ before it was too late? Did you even think about what finally getting you back only to lose you again immediately wouldâve done to me? I donât think youâve thought about my feelings at all. I donât want to be mad at you. I finally have you back and youâre not dying and I donât want this to be how I feel about this situation, but I canât help it. You hurt me and itâs hard to trust you again even though this is all Iâve ever wanted.â
