             the   smile   that   tugs   at   their   expression   is   one   of   tempered   amusement  ;      suggestions   are   voiced   like   orders  ,      and   yet   they’ve   never   followed   an   order   in   their   existence   ------------   at   least   one   not   given   to   them   by   the   continuum .      they   link   their   fingers   together   in   front   of   them  ,      hands   locked   and   hanging   by   their   waist .       ❝     why   ever   should   i   leave  ?       ❞       

JUST AS THE WAKE DOESN’T MOVE THE SHIP, THE PAST DOES NOT MOVE THE PRESENT.

the Q hold a certain understanding and conception of the universe that no other species is capable of coming close to, they understand matter in such a pure way that they have since developed the ability to control it. time and space are of no question to them, they undertsand the makeup of the universe and its every principle, they understand themselves, too, to the point of true sentience. they are formless, existing as pure thought and energy, leading to the impossibility to be comprehended in any physical sense.             however, this has resulted in the Q, ultimately, giving up the potential to learn more. they believe in themselves that they have reached the terminal point of understanding--there is nothing more to see, nothing more to learn, nothing more to experience. in the Q’s understanding of the universe, everything moves from point A to points B in a simplistic matter, which isn’t far from the truth. cause and effect and the laws of physics apply to everything, although they exist in a realm where the laws of physics are very much different, the universe is theirs to play with. but there is another constant that remains even beyond the control of the Q, and this is chaos. the random chance element of the formation of the universe is so very important, that were it not for the Q’s interfering, the universe would run upon chance and chance alone. to achieve to control is to also control the element of chaos and entropy. 

AN EXTENSIVE PROPERTY OF A THERMODYNAMIC SYSTEM

             humanity gets very few opportunities to encounter god-like life forms ——— in fact, they never do, which is what makes this particular instance all the more special. and what should one do when meeting an all-powerful, omnipotent entity?

obviously, try to rub elbows with them and get on their good side. even if it involves a little ass-kissing. and hey — rimmer is incredibly good at all of those things. so naturally, the plan is to find something in common with the ‘ Q ‘. and what better way to relate than an intelligent discussion about the stupidity of the people around them.

        “take my three traveling companions for example ——” rimmer stops as the other gestures to the unfortunate reminder of what he is. “well, it’s…. it’s…” he flounders, like he can’t tell if he’s being insulted or agreed with. “there’s something freeing to not being mortal. you must understand that of course, being as powerful as you are. i’ve always thought it sets me apart. this—” he pokes at the H upon his forehead. “is a symbol of greatness.”

                there   is   some   difference   between   mortality  ,    immortality  ,    and   the   danse   macabre .      life   beyond   death  ,      which  ,     in   and   of   itself  ,      would   be   a   peculiar   moral   subject   if   they   had   any   such   incline   towards   morality   at   all .      the   questoon   :     𝙳𝙴𝙰𝙳   𝙾𝚁   𝙰𝙻𝙸𝚅𝙴  ?     the   answer  ?     well  ,     to   a   simple   minded   human  ,     dead   is   the   only   answer .      one   cannot   return   from   that   dark   place   of   nothingness  ,      if   it   is   true   that   nothing   lies   beyond .     but   for   the   Q  -----  the   answer   is   a   little   more   complicated  ,     because   life   exists   where   death   is   required  ,    and   to   die   requires   the   potential   to   live .       𝚃𝙷𝙴   𝚀   𝙳𝙾   𝙽𝙾𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶   𝙾𝙵   𝚃𝙷𝙴   𝚂𝙾𝚁𝚃  .      to   exist  ,      to   simply   be  ,      that    is   how   one   achieves   immortality  ,     achieves   greatness .     a   consciousness   without   form .

            It never felt quite right anymore, haunting the woods as a Viveen Wild Girl of the Woods. It never felt right without him. Somehow, Nepenthe lost some of its magic when she was out there alone. Except when she’s not alone. The planet was quiet enough; Kestra never encountered more than the odd traveler, typically lost. 

            But this one… this one didn’t look like the others. 

            Kestra was not so stealthy as she liked to believe; twigs snapped beneath her footfalls, leaves rustling. Even the wood of her make-shift bow creaked as it bent as she drew the string back to her jaw. Yet she approached as though she made not a sound, and in her mind she did not: wild and untamed and one with the forest around her.    ❛ Stop! ❜   she commanded in Viverna, the language of her people.    ❛ Who are you? ❜ 

            there’s   no   language   that   they   do   not   understand   -------   real   or   invented   -------   for   they   surpass   words .      understanding   comes   from   somewhere   else  ,      ease   there   is   in   communicating   with   any   and   all   sentient   beings .     they’d   purposefully   made   themselves   locatable  ,     stood   quite   obviously   in   a   forest   clearing   where    they   could   be   seen   and   found   with   ease .      𝙼𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃   𝙸𝚃   𝙶𝙸𝚅𝙴   𝚃𝙷𝙴   𝙲𝙷𝙸𝙻𝙳   𝚂𝙾𝙼𝙴𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶   𝚃𝙾   𝙱𝙴   𝙿𝚁𝙾𝚄𝙳   𝙾𝙵 .     maybe   she’ll   think   she’s   found   herself   some   forelorn   walker  ,    lost   and   confused   and   in   need   of   assistance .       a   wide  ,    unreal   smile   finds   their   face   as   they   observe   the   bow   in   her   hands .

            𝚃𝙷𝙴   𝙱𝙴𝚂𝚃   𝙿𝚁𝙴𝙳𝙸𝙲𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽𝚂   𝙰𝚁𝙴   𝚂𝚃𝙸𝙻𝙻   𝙼𝙰𝚃𝚃𝙴𝚁𝚂   𝙾𝙵   𝙿𝚁𝙾𝙱𝙰𝙱𝙸𝙻𝙸𝚃𝚈   𝚁𝙰𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁   𝚃𝙷𝙰𝙽   𝙲𝙴𝚁𝚃𝙰𝙸𝙽𝚃𝚈  ,    and   to   the   best   of   your   knowledge   every   one   of   you   are   going   to   suffer   and   die .       this  ,     then  ,     is   the   human   problem  :      there   is   a   price   to   be   paid   for   every  increase   in    consciousness     --------------------  YOU   CANNOT   BE   MORE   SENSITIVE   TO   PLEASURE   WITHOUT   BEING   MORE   SENSITIVE   TO   PAIN .

                   ❝     is   it  ?      ❞      it’s   with  a   very   much   false   concern   in   the   note   of   his   voice   that   they   respond  ;     a   question   so   patronising   it   may   have   been   spoken   to   a   two   year   old .     they   lean   forward   to   investigate   the   bookshelf  ,      𝙾𝙻𝙳  ,     𝙰𝙽𝙳   𝙳𝙴𝙰𝙳   𝚁𝙴𝙼𝙽𝙰𝙽𝚃𝚂   𝙾𝙵   𝙸𝙼𝙰𝙶𝙸𝙽𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽 .     there  ,    in   itself  ,    is   a   wonder   of   the   mystery   of   mind  ,     the   capacity   to   imagine   more   beyond   that   which   one   might   see .     the   first   step   into   gripping   the   beyond  ,     and   the   second   ------    something   more   like   continuing   than   ever   giving   up .      𝚃𝙷𝙴   𝙾𝙽𝙻𝚈   𝙴𝙽𝙳   𝙵𝙾𝚁   𝙸𝙼𝙰𝙶𝙸𝙽𝙰𝚃𝙸𝙾𝙽   𝙸𝚂   𝙸𝙽𝙴𝚇𝙸𝚂𝚃𝙴𝙽𝙲𝙴 .     not   many   people   of   this   time   still   read   these   old   hard - backs  ,     but   they   pull   one   from   the   shelf   anyway   and   flip   through   the   pages   until   the   last   is   found .     the   final   sentence   leaves   something   to   the   lingering   note   of   the   author’s   intent .
