INFINITE VELOCITY

“Oh, I’m sure,” Reg replied with a wry, awkward chuckle. “According to the ship’s logs, the holodecks were very well-used during your journey. By all the crew. I, uh, I’m almost surprised you didn’t try to reroute that power supply elsewhere. But I understand needing that escape.” His own life would be very different without the holodeck, and he was pretty comfortable stating that the Voyager crew’s mental health would have been more poorly managed without access to it.

“I do have to ask – what’s Fairhaven? I’ve had several people mention wanting a copy of that program and I haven’t been able to find it yet.”

                 used   to   the   point   of   exhaustion  ,     sometimes   --------------    but   they’d   managed .     holodeck   time   was   scheduled  ,     apart   from   the   short   period   of   open   door   policy   that   had   accompanied   the   fairhaven   holodeck   program  ...     which   later   became   a   problem   of   its   own .         ❝     fairhaven   was  ...    a   little   project   of   mine .     just   a   quaint   little   irish   village   full   of   interesting   characters .      𝙸𝚃   𝚆𝙰𝚂   𝙶𝙾𝙾𝙳 .      at   least   until   they   all   became   self   aware   and   tried   to   kill   me .    ❞

        “now what? now – i mean….” rimmer trails off. “why should we just settle, right? for being so pathetically underestimated. for being….. being……..” he paces, clenching and unclenching his fists as he does so. “a failure! i mean, it was one mistake, wasn’t it? it wasn’t my fault that lister wasn’t there to help fix the drive plate! so really, the deaths of all those people aren’t really on me. right? and i think i’ve done more than enough to make up for it, so i don’t really know why i can’t seem to move past this, i mean, they has to be more, right?” he stops, turns back to tom. “and you, i mean, it must be really frustrating to know you’re going to be stuck out here away from earth for probably the rest of your life and not get a chance to even make something of yourself.” it’s an insult, yes, but it’s directed at himself just as much ( if not more so ) than at tom. 

FRUSTRATED FRIENDS STARTERS.

          he   watches   the   other   pace   and   rant  ,     rattling   of   a   rhetoric   that   once   he   used   to   tell   himself   -----------    alone  ,      in   his   quarters   on   the   exeter .      it’s   not   his   fault  ,       it   was   just   an   accident  ,     the   ship   was   damaged  ,      wasn’t   an   error   on   his   part  .     EXCEPT   THAT   IT   WAS .    and   the   pain   of   knowing   drove   him   to   the   point   of   insanity   before   he   finally   gave   up   dodging   the   truth .         𝚃𝙷𝙴𝙽   𝙴𝚅𝙴𝚁𝚈𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶   𝙵𝙴𝙻𝙻   𝙰𝙿𝙰𝚁𝚃   𝙵𝚄𝚁𝚃𝙷𝙴𝚁 .      but   after   all   of   that  ,     he   learnt   something .      

           lister likes tom paris. he had a feeling he would, but it’s the moment that the peanut sails cleanly through the air with perfect aim and lands right in his mouth ( with only a slight lean forward on his part ) that he decides. maybe they aren’t destined to be best friends forever but the laughter comes easy, and for a moment he can imagine what it must be like to enjoy living with your bunkmate.

“you?” lister grins. “well, can’t say i’m not surprised.” or maybe he can. hm. “you’re not so bad, though. but if we’re bein’ honest, i’ve been told i’m a bit of a slob. seems to piss people off, can’t imagine why.” he chomps down loudly on the peanut, laughter in his voice. “mostly just rimmer though, so it’s worth it.”

          he   doesn’t   intend   to   go   into   it  ,      it’s   a   long   story  ,     and   remembering   -----------     well  ,    it’s   certainly   heavy   on   his   heart .     the   nightmares   like   to   flood   back   when   he   least    expects   it .     𝚂𝙾   𝙷𝙴   𝙱𝚁𝚄𝚂𝙷𝙴𝚂   𝙾𝚅𝙴𝚁   𝙸𝚃 .      pretends   it’s   just   a   funny   little   gag   and   that   he’s   not   trying   to   build   on   himself .     to   change   the   person   he   used   to   be .     he   stands   from   his   place   on   the   couch  ,     crosses   the   room   to   a   box   at   the   foot   of   his   bed  ;     𝙵𝙸𝙻𝙻𝙴𝙳   𝚆𝙸𝚃𝙷   𝙾𝙻𝙳   𝚃𝙷𝙸𝙽𝙶𝚂 .      there’s   even   a   couple   of   vhs   tapes   in   there  ,     but   they’re   all   worn   through .     antiques .

* she sits with drama,     a  loud  sigh  intended  to  get  his  attention  as  she  rests  her  feet  on  the  chair  opposite  her,    ❝  I  simply  can’t  decide!  ❞    romana  tuts  as  she  shakes  her  head,   dark  hair  tightly  tied  up  but  a  few  stubborn  curls  escaping  either  side  of  her  features.    ❝  do  I  bet  on:    a.   me  bludgeoning  you  to  death,    b.   me  dying  all  your  shirts  red  and  you  dying  from  the  red  shirt  curse,    or   —   c.   you  dying  of  tribble  related  causes?    because,    whilst  I’d  love  the  glory,    I  also  see  you  as  the  ‘death  by  tribble’  type.  ❞     &&   if  there’s  a  hint  of  fondness  in  the  curve  of  her  lips,    she’s  never  going  to  admit  it.

                his   gaze   lifts   away   from   the   padd   within   his   fingers  ,     distracted   from   his   reading   by   the   sound   of   her   deep   sigh .     in   his   other   hand  ,     his   fork   comes   to   rest   along   the   metal   edge   of   his   dinner   tray   with   a   quiet   clink   as   he   eyes   her .      𝙷𝙴'𝚂   𝙽𝙾𝚃   𝚁𝙴𝙰𝙻𝙻𝚈   𝚂𝚄𝚁𝙴   𝚆𝙷𝙰𝚃   𝚃𝙾   𝚂𝙰𝚈   𝚃𝙾   𝚃𝙷𝙰𝚃 .    lips   purse   together   in   momentary   consideration   and   he   leans   back   in   his   chair .

        “look, it’s not that i don’t like rimmer, it’s just that everything he does pisses me off and i can’t stand being around him.” lister looks up from the ground, where he’s been picking aimlessly at his sock for the last few minutes. “pass me another, will ya?” he asks, gesturing to tom to toss him a peanut, and leans forward, preparing to catch it in his mouth. “come on. i’m sure you have people on here like that. just…. infuriating smeggers, you know.”
