I was really upset after reading these articles. I’m a hard core EAH high fan, and noticed the total lack of mention of my favorite doll line in these articles, thus further cementing the lines demise…but I digress. The first article places the blame for sale declines solely on the Toys R Us bankruptcy. I’m sure this is a factor, but could the sales in your doll lines perhaps also stem from your lack of creative and inventive new dolls within the Monster High and DC Super Hero Girl lines? The new dolls are cheap looking, unarticulated, and lack any originality.

The second article where the CEO says that Monster High is a drag on sales…well of course it is. Once again, Mattel revamped a line that didn’t need to be revamped. They’re only putting out boring, unarticulated doll lines that all look the same…so of course no one is going to buy them. The DC Super Hero dolls are falling into this same pattern. While the first line of dolls was new and different from anything on the market; the same pattern of recycling the same doll over and over again, just dressed in a different outfit seems to be a reoccurring pattern with Mattel.

I’ll give an example of how Mattel is failing to understand the public. I have a niece who is five years old, who loves the old Monster High movies. I bought one Lagoona Dance the Frights away doll, and used my Monster Exchange Lagoona (still in box) to conduct a little experiment. I told here she could pick only one doll from the two, and that she should pick the one that she liked the best. Do I need to even reveal which doll she chose? She picked the doll with the flashiest box, and with the most details! Does Mattel not realize that what appeals to adults, also appeals to kids? Adult collectors don’t want unarticulated, boring dolls, and neither do kids. If given the choice kids will pick the prettiest dolls, just like adults. Give us new dolls with detail, thought and creativity and we will buy.
