âIâma be really honest right now,â Dylan started off squinting heavily with one eye as she fiddled with the patch in her hands. âIâm too, not low, if ya know what I mean, to explain why I have to wear this, but it looked very sad and plain and negative for me to wear so I had to jazz it up a bit.â She explained as she fixed it onto her head. âWhatâdya think?â
âWell its definitely eye-catching, for sure.â His lips spread in a grin. âIn all seriousness though, its fucking cool, you look like a bougie pirate. I appreciate the creativity on your part. Did you use a glue gun?â

Draya: So now you like your suit..?
Draya: Aw babe. Hang in there. Do you have any friends there or does everyone not really know everyone?
Duncan: I don't like wearing it but I'm gonna defend my outfit choice, for sure.
Duncan: Ties make me feel like I'm getting choked. I'm not that kinky, I don't like this.
Duncan: Can't breathe and shit.
Duncan: Yeah I have a few industry friends. The whole experience is just exhausting to say the least.

Angelica: You should leave to come take care of me, obviously
Angelica: Are they important people?
Angelica: Ooh, yes please
Angelica: Give me all the deets
Duncan: It could be an excuse...
Duncan: Yeah. Network execs, investors, and all that bs.
Duncan: Pretty sure people are doing coke in the bathroom. Also this old guy came with a twenty-five year old. She doesn't seem too into him.

Mick sent his friend a smirk as he agreed to the change of plans, glad to know he didnât actually have to go through with going to the salsa class. He began to walk and patted his friend on the back with appreciation. A beer with a pal was all you needed sometimes. âSounds perfect, my man. Anyway, youâve got tons to update me on, anyway.â School had been mad for Mick recently and with everything else he had going on, he hadnât had much time to meet up with his close friends. âSteak and potato me up, but first, tell me everything thatâs going on. I canât wait to not hear my own voice. House still majestic? Show still on fire? Balls still ready for a kid? â Heading towards one of their houses, Mick was grateful to have someone like Duncan in his life.
âYes, yes and yes my friend. Not exactly now on the kid front, but I have a girlfriend- since October by the way, and I really think sheâs the one Iâm gonna marry someday. I donât know how to explain it, it just feel limitless with her, ya know? I can see a big oleâ house and some kids some day. Not gonna put that on her though, Iâm gonna give it a couple of years before all that. We went to Paris for New Years though. Brought my sister along of course, couldnât leave her here all by herself. It was fun.â He pressed the button on the key fob to unlock the doors to his truck. âI drove over here. Didnât feel like walkinâ. Hop in.âÂ

Draya: But it doesn't match! đ
Draya: Remind me again what the event is?
Duncan: It matches my brown shoes and my brown tie!
Duncan: Its just a promotional thing. We're all here to network and look like we're doing something with our lives.

Angelica: Wait, no. Better idea
Angelica: Get wasted
Duncan: What am I supposed to do four hours away??
Duncan: Eat some soup? Drink some tea?
Duncan: Not sure if thats a good idea. I don't want to make a fool out of myself in front of all these people.
Duncan: I will text you all the stupid shit thats happening though.

Nikki did not stop her eyes from rolling at the mention of their mother. Susan. Girls are supposed to love and cherish and look up to their mothers. Daughters and mothers are supposed to be able to talk to each other and hang out together. Nikki and Susan did not have that kind of relationship. She couldnât remember the last time she looked at her mother with anything other than disdain. âSusan doesnât know anything about my schedule or what the hell I do. Donât take her word when it comes to me.â
His next question had her freezing up. She wasnât expecting a direct question from him regarding her sobriety. A small part of her mind screamed at her to deny, deny, deny. The larger, drug filled part of her mind smirked because it saw itâs way out of this conversation. She knew Duncan better than almost anyone. He didnât like hurting people. Especially not her, his baby sister. Nikki would be out the door in 30 seconds flat and all it would take is three easy steps:
1.) Act offended.
2.) Act hurt.
3.) Storm off.
âExcuse me?â She asked incredulously, her head rearing back in shock. âWhy would you ask me that? Are you fucking joking? You leave and now you come back just to judge me?â She sniffed, trying her hardest to make her eyes well up. They did but only slightly. One of her hands went into her pocket where the money was, gripping it in her hand. Time to leave. âWow. Youâre a real asshole, D. I hope your next visit goes better.â She moved to storm past him and out the door, she could practically taste freedom and her next hit.
You leave and now you come back just to judge me?
She knew where to hit him the deepest. Her words uncovered a deep old scarred wound, now ripped raw and bleeding. Hearing her talk made him feel like he was a kid again. With his mother coming down from her high and shouting God knows what kind of disappointments and problems she had with him at six years old. Duncan felt like he was back in his childhood role, the literal punching bag. Just someone who existed for people to put their faults on, their anger, and their baggage. He felt disposable when he was younger, as if he didnât really have a purpose other than to carry the weight of others pain along with his own. For years he didnât acknowledge this feeling, however it wasnât like he was taught to. Early on he was taught that there was no real use for tears. That life was made to suck and that he should just deal with it. So, Duncan acted out, taking what he thought the world and everyone else owed him. There were no other emotions he was allowed to feel but explosive and uncontrolled anger. So the minute he felt defenseless from Nikkiâs words, he put on his invisible thick outer shell that he built up all those years so he wouldnât get hurt again. Immediately, his mind shifted into gear and subconsciously went by the motto he went by over the years:Â

Angelica: I can't breathe out of my nose but sure, complain about appetizers.
Angelica: Where even are you?
Angelica: Just... leave?
Duncan: Take some medicine. You'll be fine.
Duncan: This event. I have to do it, its for work.
Duncan: Some of the people here are straight up assholes.

As soon as he released her from the hug, her eyes strayed from his. Though she had mastered the art of lying over the years, she hadnât had many opportunities to test her skills out on Duncan. He is the one person who can read her like a book and she didnât need that right now. âIâm fine. Iâm great. I was just on my way out. If I knew you were coming, I would have been better prepared for you. I need to go uh, meet a friend of mine.â Her body was practically vibrating with energy and she couldnât fidgeting. She was rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet, eager to make a break for it but knowing that he would only chase her.Â
âIâm fine. Just honestly need to be somewhere other than here right now.â The cash felt like a weight in her pocket. Her hands started shaking again so she tightly grasped them together. She felt off balance and her anxiety was through the roof. âWhat are you even doing here?â She snapped, before she could stop herself. He was in the way and she needed him to go away.
"Uhh...Susan told me that you didnât have anything to do today, so I figured weâd go out to lunch...â Her anxiousness was familiar. That, the fidgeting, and the shaking he had seen all to well in their own mother. Specifically, when she was out of drugs or trying to get clean. Duncan sent up a quick prayer in his head. Heâd hoped and prayed for the two of them to never fall into their parentâs path. There was no way she could be on drugs. Nikki knew better, he raised her better. Duncan did everything right, didnât he? He put her in after school activities, tried to get her what she wanted on her birthday, and even though Disneyworld was too far away and too expensive, he did the next best thing and took her to six flags. Sure, addiction was hereditary, but he wasnât addicted to anything, and they both knew that theyâd be better off not touching the stuff. There was no way she could be on anything.
Then she snapped.
He had to ask her. It was the only way heâd know. Her behavior and her sudden outburst all but confirmed it for him. He just needed her to tell him no and that somehow heâd gotten things mixed up. The last thing he had ever wanted was an addictâs life for her, and here she was, continuing the cycle. âNikki I need you to be honest with me.â He pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a sigh. âAre you using?â
mickey-cooperâ:
Mick rolled his eyes as he took the phone back, he knew his friend was right, as usual. âIâm trying too hard, arenât I?â he rubbed his head as if to rub off the embarrassment of his lonely, desperate hunt for a woman to spend his time with. âGod. You know as well as I do that I couldnât see myself with any one of these woman Iâve been swiping for - shock. You fancy fucking off this class and cooking me a fancy meal whilst I whine and try not to go to the casino and play away all my worries?â Although Mick was only joking, after all, if you couldnât constantly ask your TV-chef-friend to make you a slap up meal then who could you ask? He just wanted someone to keep him company on nights when he knew he needed to keep his demons at bay.
Duncan thought about it for a moment. He could barely stand on his own two feet without falling flat on his ass. If he could choose between a potentially embarrassing moment and a great memory with a friend, heâd choose the latter. âYou know what? That donât sound half bad.â He said as he scratched his chin. âTell you what, we can go to this salsa class and get you a hot piece of ass another time. Right now, all I see is you and me, a couple of beers, a game, and a big juicy piece of meat. Sound good?â Duncan didnât mind cooking for his friends, especially if it was something as quick as steak and potatoes. He figured he could ask Mick for some help to begin with anyway, and he was sure he wouldnât mind. Besides, the two of them had a lot of catching up to do and they couldnât do that while dancing.

Staring with optimism at the âwhatâs onâ outside the concert hall, Mickey pondered his options. A show? Wouldnât mind. A concert? not too shabby⌠a dance class? Absolutely. If there was one place he was going to meet the new love of his life (who wasnât going to end up being 80 years old like last weekâs tinder catfish), or just a new person to hang with, it was going to be this salsa class. The man was in a good mood, due to his little discovery, and so as he hastened to walk up the steps to book onto the class, did a few little salsa moves, before pulling his phone out of his pocket to check his recent matches. If only his moves had been more sleek, if only his shoe hadnât been untied, if only heâd not tried to run (or more accurately, salsa) before he could walk, Mick wouldnât have fallen over his lace and fell up the stairs with zero grace, sending his phone flying and his tinder matches facing up for all the world to see. Quickly, the man attempted to scramble back onto his feet, but something about his 6 foot stature didnât assist him well and he instead began to stagger to his feet, whilst trying to remain as cool as possible.
âYou know, when we decided to take this class I was sure that youâd be fallinâ on the dance floor.â Duncan chuckled as he helped his friend up. âI mean, better you than me, lets be honest. Pretty sure if I fell, I wouldnât be able to get up.â He joked before reaching down to hand him his phone, raising a brow as soon as he saw his tinder matches. Duncan let out a low whistle and shoved his hands in his pockets. âNo offense brother, but that blonde on the screen is so not your type.â

âWhere the hell is it?â The entire bedroom was in an upheaval. Clothes and shoes were thrown everywhere. The mattress was off the frame and dresser drawers were hanging practically off the hinges. Nikki felt like hell and she knew if she could just find the coke she believed she stashed in the house that she would feel better. Her hands shook as she ran them through her hair to try and tame it. She knew she looked a mess. If the coke wasnât in her room, then she needed to go get some. Did she have any money? Nope. But Susan did and thatâs all she needed to know.
It wasnât her dream to be a twenty-five year old living with her mother, but here she was. Nikki was unable to keep her own apartment because she could never keep up with her bills. The money sheâd try to save for bills always got spent on something else, something more important. The cokeâŚit was almost an indescribable feeling. It was happiness. It was relief. It was euphoria. Nothing in her life had ever or could ever make her feel better. When she didnât have it, she was paranoid and irritable like she was in this very moment.
As she exited her room, she hurried down the hall toward her motherâs room which was on the opposite side of the hallway. Nikki searched through the nightstand because she knew Susan usually kept cash in there for emergencies. She took a hundred dollars out and grinned in satisfaction. She walked back out of the room and through the hallway into the living room, about to make her way out of the apartment when she saw her brother. Her brother who hadnât lived there in years. Her brother who wasnât supposed to be there now.
âH-hey. I didnât hear the door open or even know you were in town.â She quickly put the money in her pocket and tried to gave him her signature smile. She really didnât feel like partaking in any pleasantries. She needed to score but in front of her stood a literal barrier. âWhat are you doing here? Not that itâs not good to see you. Susa-I mean, Mom didnât mention you visiting.â She went to hug him, going right back into âsweet little sisterâ mode. Her goal was to keep the conversation short and to get out as soon as possible.
@ofduncans
One thing that Duncan thought would never last was his motherâs sobriety. Susan had gone on and off the wagon plenty of times in her life, and if he really thought about it, she probably did so long before he was even born. However, this time she seemed to be clean for good. A whole year. Sheâd changed from the bitter selfish woman heâd grown up with to someone he didnât really recognize before. Even though he was reluctant to trust her, he decided to go ahead and begin helping her out. Duncan had moved his mother from the house that they had grown up in to a decent two-story in a better area. Now that she was sober and living in a place that didnât hold painful memories, Duncan began visiting her more. Seeing his mother now meant that he got to see his sister, Nikki. They hadnât had the best relationship since he moved away, however Duncan hoped to patch things over by taking her out to lunch.Â
As he arrived at his motherâs place, Duncan used his key and headed inside, immediately locking eyes with his little sister as he stood in the doorway. Immediately, the hairs on the back of his head stood up when he took in her appearance. She looked frantic almost, as if sheâd been in a frenzy just minutes before. He meets her hug halfway and gets a closer look at her for a moment before releasing her. âUh, you okay?â He asks with a dry chuckle. âYou know, if this isnât a good time I can come back and get you later...â What was going on? A break up? A tough day at work? Was she depressed? He hoped she wasnât, it would kill him to know that she was going through something like that, especially by herself. âYou okay, sis?â
