“Oh good, you’re here,” Mari said, smiling at the first person she’d recognized all evening. “People keep talking to me in Japanese, and all I can say is gomen-nasai, which I apparently say in a thick enough accent that they understand I can’t speak their language, I feel so awful. I can say sorry, and thank you, and hello, and that’s it. I’m polite, at least,” she sighed. 

“Do you know any more Japanese than I do? Also hey, I was about to head into this cat cafe, you’re not allergic are you? If you are, I heard there are also ones for dogs, and owls and hedgehogs. My goal is to eventually get to all of them.”
