Note: I am a Native Korean speaker and my advice is based off from my experience when I was studying Japanese.

When you can read a sentence but don’t understand it, try breaking down the problem: Do you know what all the words mean? Do you know what those particles mean or why they are there? 

If you don’t know what a few words mean, focus on your vocab. In order to memorise vocab efficiently, there are a lot of different methods, but I personally find using flashcards and reading them out loud really helpful! If you would like flashcards, I have a Quizlet class (free!!) that you can join to use flashcards I have made for my vocab lists! In order to memorise vocab, what I found helpful was to say it out loud whenever I saw it at home! (e.g. whenever I saw the TV, i would say the word for TV out loud) This is similar to how children learn their first language and it was really effective for me!

Yes, it’s the season where that’s normal but because of the sayings (aka incentive) of our new president, some farmers are taking advantage of that and intentionally setting the trees on fire. Yesterday, because of this, the sky of São Paulo looked like this. AT THREE IN THE AFTERNOON.

Hospitals of the northern states are filling up with people (especially children and seniors) claiming they can’t breathe properly. ALREADY ENDANGERED ANIMALS ARE DYING. THIS IS SERIOUS.

Germany and Norway, huge donators to the Amazon cause will stop sending money because they don’t see results (that can also be credited to our president, who has been tweeting angrily ever since - not because he cares about the environment, btw). That money gives this guy and his team equipment to save little guys like these:

THIS AFFECTS EVERYONE, NOT JUST BRAZILIANS. The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, and it’s being destroyed. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

If your country is holding elections, vote for someone who cares about this. Don’t let another Bolsonaro or another Trump have the power to do something and then do nothing. This is going to shape our future — if we have one.

Do not forget to pack your underwear and socks! Start there. Also, the more you bring, the less frequently you’ll have to do laundry.

Go-to’s, i.e. shirts, trousers, shorts, skirts, and COATS. When you start university, you’ll realise that many people just wear the same thing every day. The stigma of outfit repeating doesn’t exist for students.

Travel clothes. There will be so much to explore, so travel in typical student-style by packing joggers, leggings, hoodies… Generally comfy clothes.

Sports clothes are a good idea especially if you’re going to join a club or society. Most universities have a gym you can join and working out is a great way to relieve stress and boost mental health.

Bathing suit – you never know. It’s best to have one even if it just sits in your closet for the whole year!

If you plan on going out-out, even if it’s just for Freshers Week, bring some outfits you feel fresh in - AND 1 (one)  FANCY DRESS COSTUME

Comfortable shoes for walking in any weather, and trainers to run to lectures in for when you miss your alarm.

Flip flops are ideal if your accommodation has shared bathroom facilities. Shower shoes are a thing.

Toiletries

I recommend bringing these with you instead of buying them when you land:

Toothbrush + toothpaste + floss

Travel-size shampoo + conditioner + body wash (buy proper bottles once you’ve arrived and settled in)

Makeup

Moisturiser is pretty essential in the UK. Cold weather can take a real toll on your skin.

Feminine products

Contraceptives

Medications or prescriptions. It’s also important to register with a GP as soon as you can so that you can access health services in the UK. Pro tip: don’t wait until you get sick to do this.

Sunscreen – the UK can be a scorcher during the summer as it is harsh in the winter! Take care of your skin out there

Misc - the little things that make a big difference

A bottle opener

Coat hangers

At least 1 formal wear outfit

Spare bed sheets (!!!!!)

Portable speakers (cheap ones are great)

A decent mug (to keep in your room so no one steals it)

Unnecessary items that will weigh you down, i.e. bath bombs, plates… 

Packing tips

Do not leave it until the day before! If you pack last-minute, you’re bound to forget something. Don’t even tempt fate like that. Dedicate a day to plan and pack your stuff to be safe. It’s a very exciting time, so make a day of it!

Consider how much storage you’ll have in your accommodation. Look at photos and floorplans to figure out how much you can bring with you. You want to be prepared but you want to make the most out of your space.

Hello everyone! I’ve had a lot of time to make lesson posts and work on my Korean pdf’s for you all, so that’s why there’s an influx of posts this week. I hope you all don’t mind as it gives you all something for when I’m not here! But for today, I wanted to talk about the

5 Big Mistakes that Korean Language Learners Make

I want to say before I start that mistakes are only natural. And of course EVERYONE will make them at some point in their Korean language journey – it has to happen in order for you to get better. Of course, you’re embarrassed for a while after and if you’re like me you think about it at night for hours. But if anything, it makes you understand that it takes time to learn a language. So keep your head up and don’t be discouraged. You’re doing amazing :)

1. 한글 VS 한국어

This is a really big one. Often times I will see beginners saying ‘한글 배우자’. Which would be fine if it was ‘Let’s learn Hangul; the Korean Alphabet’. However, more often than not, the translation they use is ALWAYS ‘Let’s learn Korean’. I will say it here and NOW:

한글 does NOT mean ‘Korean Language’!

I will also often get people asking me to teach them 한글, and I always direct them to my Hangul Cheat Sheet. But then they come back saying ‘I already know this’. Then after trying to figure out what they meant, they finally tell me they mean Korean. As in the WHOLE language.

2. NOT Learning 한글

This is a big one for me. Often times, I will see language learners only using romanization. If you’ve followed me for a long time, you will know that I absolutely HATE romanization. I said it then and I will say it again: it is EXTREMELY detrimental to your Korean language journey. If you rely on romanization, then you are making yourself illiterate in the Korean Language. They will not have romanization in Korea.

And for those who say ‘it’s too hard’, 세종대왕 (King Sejong, the 4th King and arguably their greatest King, even to this day) made Hangul in the 조선 (Joseon) Dynasty in order for his people to be more literate. It is considered the most efficient writing system in all of Asia. Korean was a language before it’s alphabet; they were using Chinese symbols and characters, which 세종대왕 said couldn’t express Korean thought and words.

Once you learn it, not only will your Korean get 100x better, you will sound more natural when you speak. Here are some sites you can use to learn:

3. Switching Formalities TOOOOOOO Much: 저 VS 나

I understand that grasping the concept of formalities is difficult, especially if your native language doesn’t have them. But a Korean language learner should be, at least, familiar with formalities if they are ready to talk to a native speaker. I’ve even fallen hopeless to switching formalities early on in my blog! Like I said, it’s okay to make mistakes, just as long as we learn from it.

In Korean, you have 반말 (casual speech) and 존댓말 (polite speech). If you switch too often between the two, your Korean can sound unnatural and lazy. Not to mention rude if you use 반말 to the wrong person. A big mistake I see is people using 저 with 반말 and 나 with 존댓말. Here’s an example:

안녕! 저 희주야

안녕하세요. 나는 희주입니다.

Like I said, it’s really common to make these mistakes. But if you make the quick switch, you will sound more natural.

4. Not taking the time to do the boring stuff AND pushing yourself out of your comfort zone

If you are serious about learning Korean, then you will do the stuff that makes you bored and makes you step out of your comfort zone. Speaking to a native used to TERRIFY me, and every time a native speaker would find out I’m learning, I would always feel my heart in my throat. But after speaking to my tutors or my language exchange partners, it became easier and easier.

Here’s what I mean by boring stuff. GRAMMAR. I’ve said it before, but if you find that your Korean isn’t going anywhere and you’re stuck in this plateau, then you probably aren’t focusing enough time on the important stuff. Of course, you learn at your own pace and there’s no rush, but one way to seriously get better is to sit down and learn grammar. On top of that, there’s more to studying Korean than just learning it’s most common phrases. There are good to know! But they won’t carry your Korean to an advanced level.

5. Some Common Spelling Mistakes 

코피 =/= 커피

Understanding how vowels are pronounced is crucial, because you don’t want to ask for a nose bleed in the wrong situation.

어떻게 =/= 어떡해

어떻게 = how?

어떡해 = what do I do?

되다 =/= 돼다

되다 -> 되어요 -> 돼요

가야 되요 (X)

가야 돼요 (O)

And try to pronounce it more like ‘대요’, it sounds more natural

제발 =/= 주세요

주세요 = please give me

제발 = please (kind of begging)

왜(요)?

Why?

왜 나한테 이러는 거예요? : Why are you doing this to me?

왜 여기 있어요? : Why are you here?

왜 안 했어요? : Why didn’t you do it?

왜 그렇게 생각해요? : Why do you think that?

왜 도망가요? : Why are you running (away)

Even though 왜(요) has only one translation; why, sometimes in certain contexts it can be used to mean what. 

is only translated to mean what when:

Asking asking the reason why someone is doing something

Example: 

Person A: stares at person B

Person B: 왜?
