I know you get a lot of asks of TME/TMA, but how is Demi Adejuyigbe TMA? I get that theyβre under the trans umbrella and are definitely affected by anti-Blackness but I canβt quite see how theyβre affected by misogyny in general, or transmisogyny?
Good question! I think something that would be helpful here is if you asked yourself why you think they wouldn't be affected by misogyny.
Transphobia in of itself is heavily based in misogyny and Demi Adejuyigbe is trans, why do you think he would experience misogyny less than, say, Vic Michaelis?
Because he uses he/they pronouns as opposed to she/they pronouns? Because he's not openly "feminine" enough? Or because he was presumably assigned male?
Anyone can feel free to correct me but I feel like my original post discussing Demi Adejuyigbe is frankly the most blatant example that they're TMA.
They don't identify solely as male and thus, experience specifically transmisogynistic harassment as a result. Who else but TMA folks have been treated like that on Dropout? Who else gets put on stage and hypersexualized to the extent of straight up harassment as a fucking bit?
They were right next to two other openly trans TME contestants but who was singled out and dehumanized and sexually harassed? Demi. And that's not just because he's Black! He wasn't the only Black person there, not even the only misogyny-affected Black person there.
Dropout has had many other Black contestants and while the antiBlackness is still apparent, none I've seen have been treated to this level of harassment (though I would argue the microaggressions that I've seen against Persephone are similar, for obvious reasons).
How would that not be transmisogyny? He's not the only dark-skinned Black person who's been on the show. But was treated differently from the other dark-skinned Black person. They're not the only Black person in general but again, he was treated distinctly differently from most.
They're not the only trans person who's been on the show either! But they were treated with a very similar, if exacerbated, hypersexualization, ridicule and dehumanization that only TMA folks have been.
Because rejecting the idea of solely identifying as male made others identify them as TMA and thus, an "acceptable" target. Like, just because they aren't currently super feminine doesn't mean they can't be TMA or experience misogyny.
Another show did some weird transmisogynistic shit with Demi too (An Australian show, I think?) recently! Like. Its not an isolated incident. I think its more important to ask yourself why you think he isn't TMA.
