Lu Ten had spent hours showing him all the drawings in the house, telling him all the stories he knew, before falling asleep. Mighty tales about blue dragons and strong, tiny turtleducks and pretty ladies with ocean-eyes.

Ursa still looked at him with the same awed expression. So he replied, “He's a good kid,” because it was the truth.

Ursa—beautiful, brave, sorrowful Ursa—turned to them, studied her children for one final time, and smiled.

Zuko didn't call her 'Mom' often. But now he didn't know if he'd ever have another chance to.

Zuko painted his skin red each night with the even strokes of a prayer.

This was no Blue Spirit of the Deep Waters. This was Zuko and his rage. Zuko and his shame. Zuko and the cloak he donned in honor of the legend of a woman who covered her scars in paint and turned her grief into light.

Drenched in red and covered in shadows, the Painted Ghost bends lightning and flame in search of retribution.
