Short Term Groups: Anywhere from 1 day to 1½ weeks.

Mid-Length Groups: Anywhere from about 2 weeks to 1 month.

Long Term Groups: Starting from 1 month to even years.

Neverending Groups: Groups with no determined end. These often continue on until not enough people are interested in continuing anymore.

Title: Character Name / Age / etc. important info

Image of Face: A square image of the character’s face. This can be a drawing done by the participant, a commission with credit, or a picrew image with credit. This is also the image that will be the profile picture of the character’s account.

Image of Full Body or Full Body Description: A full image of the character’s whole body, head to toe. The character should be wearing the correct attire. This can be a drawing done by the participant, a detailed description done by the participant, or a commissioned drawing with credit.

Name: The name of the character. 

Species: This is only needed if necessary. In groups that are consisted of all humans shouldn’t need to specify all the characters are human.

Age: Literally the age of the character. The main manager/administrator should make limitations based on the setting/theme of the group.

Height and Weight: This is needed for reference for other participants.

Gender/Sex: Some groups completely take away this part while others require strict clarification. Groups such as an all girl’s school wouldn’t need to clarify their sex, but creative liberties are always welcome.

Personality: A description of the character’s personality. Some people enjoy writing a whole essay while others like to put simple keywords. A minimum of 3 keywords with short descriptions are common.

Other: Literally other information that the participant wants to write down about their character. Examples are favorite things, least favorite things, birthdays, family members, blood type, hobbies, etc. Literally whatever you want to write.

Pre-Relations: If you and your friend want to make characters that know each other prior to the RP setting, this is where you write your friend’s character’s name. Most groups do not allow lovers. Common pre-relations are siblings, twins, best friends, etc.

Private Portion (This part does not get revealed to other participants.)

Secret Information: Backstories, Secret Hobbies, Past Incidents, etc. Anything the character doesn’t want everyone to know. This part can be left empty if you want. Usually, participants reveal this information after the group is over.

Participant’s Age: Not all groups require this, but this is to ensure a certain level of maturity in the group. If you’re going to lie about your age, make sure you act maturely enough to not cause any trouble.

Participant’s Contact Info: This should NEVER be your personal information. This should be a social media account that allows DMs or PMs in case the administration/staff needs to contact you.

This is just a basic outline of an application and can be changed however needed. Applications are often received as external links such as a Google docs link or an Evernote link through the DMs of the main manager/administrator.

This application format was based on basic slice-of-life RP groups. Groups that require hp and other stats should have a separate stats portion. I will make a separate post about stats if someone asks for one. I will also make an example application in the future.

The following is a basic outline for an OCRP group with the explanations.

Applications

This is the time where the group administrator(s) accepts applications for the group. The application consists of the basic profile of the original character. I will make a basic version of an application and post it to this blog. Some groups accept all applicant while other groups only accept a few. In the latter case, the application determines whether or not you get to join the group.

Pre-Open

Usually, Pre-Open takes place for one or two days. This is the time all participants make accounts for their characters and prepare to start the actual role-playing. For groups that only accept a few applications, this is the time you will find out if you are in or not. Some groups allow you to ask why you didn’t get picked while others don’t and all of this will also take place during this time.

Open Day (Intro)

The main manager/administrator starts the story with a short introduction which sets the scene so everyone is on the same page. All participants can begin chatting once the intro is over. The first day is usually the day characters get to know each other by introducing themselves. There are also groups where the characters already know each other and in this case, the open day would be the time to show off your character’s personality to other participants.

Running

This is the duration of the group. The length depends on each group. I will make a separate post on the different lengths of OCRP groups.

Close Day (Outro)

This is the last day of the OCRP group. For some groups, this is the last day the characters will ever see each other while for others this is just “the end of a new start.” Similar to the open day, the main manager/administrator ends the group with a short outro. Usually, characters can no longer speak to each other after the outro begins and they cannot speak to each other after the outro either. Participants are allowed to speak out of character only after the group has ended and this is often when participants exchange contact information.

These are just a few and anyone should feel comfortable to create their own events. Often events only go on for 24 hours, but the time can be adjusted however it is convenient. The fun of these events is that the participants don’t have full control over what will happen. The manager/administrator should make this as fun as possible. Not all group members have to join in on the events, but it’s more fun to join than to not.

It is required that participants draw or write a scenario for each event to show activity. Also, the group only lasts for a while. It’s nice to show that you care.

Potion Event: Each participant submits a potion color and effect. Then the manager or administrator randomly hands the potions out for each participant to drink. Effects are often silly such as “Your neck grows 50 inches” or “You cannot stop laughing” or “You turn into a cactus” or “You can only walk sideways.” etc.

Handcuff Event: Some groups change this to ribbon. Those who participate are each given a random partner within the group. The two characters are then handcuffed for 24 hours. There are no breaks, meaning you have to go to the bathroom with your partner, too.

Couple Event: Some groups make this real and others just make it a game. Participants are given a random partner and you must act like lovers for 24 hours. For real situations, there’s often magic involved that tricks your character into thinking they really do fall in love with their partner. For the other situation, participants are making it more of a joke or a game and characters also know this is just a game.

Dress Up Event: This event is popular during Halloween time. Participants can dress up as whatever they want and spend the day in their new outfits taking pictures and just playing around. It is also possible for the manager or admin to assign costumes to participants.

Body Switch Event: Participants are assigned a random partner and they switch bodies. (or souls) For 24 hours each participant gets to be in someone else’s body and experience the world through someone else’s perspective. Memories are not switched, just bodies.

Age Change Event: This event often happens in groups with a smaller age range. For example, all participants become 10 years old for 24 hours. Memories can be temporarily erased or just the bodies change. This gives the chance to see your fellow characters at a different age.

Animal Event: This even often happens in groups where participants are mostly all human or human form. For 24 hours, each character turns into a random animal or an animal of their choice. The range of animal can be full-on 100% animal or just animal ears and tail. Whatever you want.

2P Event: Like how 2nd player characters have different/reversed colors, this event changes participants’ characters into the reversed colors and personality. So a mainly red and black character would become a blue and white character. A bright, organized character would become a gloomy, messy character.

Secret Santa Event: Just as the name is, each character is assigned a Secret Santa. You choose a present to give and send it to the manager/admin. Then the manager/admin gives the present to someone random. To keep things anonymous, people often just find a photo from Google and leave a short message.

There are as many events are one’s creativity allows.

Some of these events require the manager/admin to assign random partners or items. However, sometimes these don’t have to be as random as they seem. If the manager/admin secretly has a ship they want to push, who would know if that ship is getting pushed...lol Some people even ask if they can be secretly put with another character for these events.

Anyway, it doesn’t really matter how these events get done as long as everyone is having fun.

To be honest, I have never joined an RP group outside of Korea. This “new” format I’m trying to bring is the most popular, if not the only, format of OCRP in Korea. I really have a lot of fun doing these RPs and I want to share the fun with people outside of the country.

This format of RP can be done on any platform including Twitter, Tumblr, Amino, and other sites when integrated correctly.

There are mainly two types of OCRP groups: Event-Based and Story-Based.

Event-Based groups just have the theme/setting for the group without an overarching story. These groups are often slice-of-life and/or school-based. Throughout the duration of the RP, there are special events that take place for usually 24 hours. There are countless types of events that people can make. I will make a separate blog post about different types of events.

Story-Based groups are exactly what they sound like. There is an overarching story that the participants will experience throughout the duration of the RP. The main manager or administrator is in charge of telling the story and each participant is to react accordingly to the story. There are two types of Story-Based groups. One is where the participants do not have control over the story and there is only one outcome. The other is where the participants actively make choices that determine the outcome of the story. In all cases, the main manager/administrator should have full control of the group and prepare for all outcomes.

It is possible for a group to have an overarching story and special events. In this case, the events would be similar to filler episodes in a show.

“Did you hear about the new camp?”

“The one with those scumbags? As if anyone is interested in that.”

“Right? Who in the world would want to spend time with them...”
