the only romantic dynamic im excited for from house of guinness is the potential one between ellen and sean, so i hope their relationship does have that sort of development.
ellen x edward don't work for me bc the show skipped through their relationship development and edward really does put her second to his business. same goes with sean x olivia in regards to rushed development and they are just uninteresting to me as a dynamic.
meanwhile, ellen x sean have a subtle, unsuspicious buildup that would actually make for a stronger foundation if their relationship keeps developing, and i can see each bringing something raw from the other. the way they position themselves in the world also clashes in the most delicious way.
like, him seeing her behind the flames for the first time is the most intriguing moment for any m/f dynamic in this show, and their interaction in the cell is charged with chemistry and hot af. theirs is the only dynamic that "shows, not tells," if you know what i mean?
i don't think it should be lost on us how these couple of years, the "bro" theme has been dominating movies and mainstream media, while women's stories have been reduced to motherhood.....
and like, this gendered disparity has historically dominated our culture and cinema, nothing new about it. what's unfortunate is how it seems to become stronger lately and how some people act like it's somehow refreshing and revolutionary?
a movie about a male hero dealing with mental health issues and his relationship with masculinity is all good but why act like it's not the theme that has been dominating our cultural consciousness since the beginning of patriarchy, lol?
and i'm not saying "don't like these movies!" i myself enjoy some of them a lot! but i also think that (especially female majority) fandoms should do some introspection regarding the internalized male-centrism that exists within these spaces and support the female lead movies with equal enthusiasm.
you know, we should learn to not be "annoying" about it while also pointing out the outdated misogynistic cliches that we don't want to see any more.
um, i see people pointing out that ormund's death scene was homophobic, but i think what should also be discussed is that it's a grape joke.
which is why i hate it. the show does it with the characters it thinks should be punished. like how alicent being a bystander was punished by an attempted assault and now how ormund's aggressive language was punished by a very vulgar metaphor for grape.
and it is simply cheap and tonally jarring, imo.
not that it's a big deal, but why wouldn't people use fanny (along with the guinea pig) instead of random oc pets when they want the bolts to have an animal around in fanon?
like, fanny is actually important for yelena's story. wanting to have a dog was one of the first wishes she had after getting her mind back, and she named the dog after nat's alias. i think there are a few clothing pieces she has worn that depict dogs as well, so she is canonically a dog person.
either way is fine and lovely, ofc! but i feel like there is so much to yelena's mcu story that can be used in fanfics and fanart, ect.

Chapter 2 it out! Join Yelena and Ava in their steamy banya time!
Episodes set in Yelena’s banya, the place of steam and wisdom! Exploring what banya means to Yelena as she shares heated bath with her good friends.
Chapter - Yelena/Johnny
Chapter - Yelena/Ava
Chapter - Yelena/Bob
the way yelena casually suggests that peter might be dealing with ghosts, possession, mythic creatures, alien tech... the bolts seem to be busy.
what makes yelena a truly exciting character in the mcu is that her characterization is genuinely special.
she wished to be the one everyone could rely on as a girl but then that dream was taken away from her when the red room brainwashed her. now, her arc has been about connecting with her core purpose through freeing herself from shame.
and it's a breath of fresh air to see a human character navigate herself on those cosmic, "big potato," scales and enjoy being an avenger, inspiring hope through her strong will.
i think that her character development in the avengers movies will touch upon her anxiety about living up to her sister's legacy and being a "true" avenger. it would be fitting. would absolutely love a romantic storyline with bob too bc their chemistry is fantastic and they just fulfill each other!

for those who don't know, "banya" is a russian public bath where the high heat and steam lets bathers sweat!
yelena's cameo in bnd is not just a fun look into her life as an avenger. it shows her character development.
from the time the red room took her and till she got her mind back, she had her autonomy taken away from her and was used as a tool to do terrible things.
yet yelena at her core is a leader and a hero. we know that as a child she wanted to be the one her soccer team could rely on. and then when she got her mind back, she wanted to liberate other widows.
but bc of years of brainwashing, she doubted that she could be a hero any longer and thought that there was something wrong with her. like, she was so lost and depressed and alone when she got her mind back.
and then, through thunderbolts, she finally remembered that feeling of being the one who made the room bright. bc they trusted her to lead them out of darkness.
and now, we see her embrace that purpose and role with confidence and joy. she is the happiest she has ever been being an avenger. amongst the people who rely on her, doing the work she loves.
i think even her being so research focused is such a good way of showing her embracing her freedom through exploration, you know?

i appreciate it so much that bnd shows yelena loving being an avenger focusing on big important hero work!
she embraces her role as a leader and is wise even when funny and flirtatious! bright as ever!
okay, so, rivals is a lot of fun and i love the countryside setting and i missed the whole messy drama genre.
but man, why is no one talking about how lacking the writing for the female characters is? i mean, in the show's defense, it's not like the male characters are complex or anything, but they are at least allowed their povs and agency. meanwhile, the female characters are just blank walking stereotypes who get tossed around by the men's whims.
and all the romantic relationship dynamics are heteronormative and cliche without any introspection or subversion to the point of ridiculousness.
i have an issue with the take that toph being masc while liking dudes is wrong.
like, generally speaking, why are we treating masculinity in women who like men as some dirty stain or a rot? why does femininity have to be the one humanizing and dignifying trait for women? and why are we validating the idea that all women who are into men have to be submissive, softer, receptive and nurturing?
i hate how the discourse around female characters is reduced to "they should be allowed femininity." bc it's basically substituting "femininity" for "female," in a sense that it perpetuates bio-essentialism. sure, that sentiment can be relevant with some female characters, but it is not like if a female character is not feminine that's somehow bad.
started watching rivals s1 and wonder if i'm the only one who likes cameron x patrick.
like, i'm so starved for older confident woman x younger yearner man ships...
that hand caressing galadriel is definitely sauron's, i think.
not only bc she looks distressed, but also bc she is lying down on fancy cushions, if you pay attention. and i doubt that celeborn's cell would have those, lol.
it's also insane just how alike sauron and celeborn look. i have a whiplash each time i see celeborn and realize that it's not sauron.

y'all, i'm not really up to date for trop bc i don't feel that invested anymore after burning out, but i'm still curious what's going on?
i've seen so many people being disappointed in the tags but watching the trailer, it looks like galadriel actually still has a significant role, maybe even bigger than in s2? and she seems in a battle mode as opposed to just sitting around in her realm. her relationship with sauron is teased too and i think it's kind of interesting that celeborn was casted to look so alike sauron.
everyone is like, "oh, what should nolan's next movie be about? what is there left for him to touch upon?"
my vote is for a big epic fantasy with all the beloved hero's journey tropes but with a female protagonist.
