Henley and her husband, Miles, were finishing up in the guest room while Lula and Danny were still locked in a heated PlayStation match with Charles, Henley’s oldest. Danny was loudly accusing Charles of cheating, and Lula was doubled over laughing, calling him a sore loser.
From the hallway, Henley’s voice rang out. “Charles! Bedtime, buddy. School tomorrow, remember?”
Charles groaned like he was being sentenced to death but paused the game. “Just five more minutes!”
“Nope,” Henley shot back, already in full mom-stance. “Time’s up. Come on.”
Charles said goodnight to his godparents and Henley’s friends before heading off. Lula clapped once and announced hot chocolate in the kitchen for everyone.
Just as Jack started to follow, Lula blocked his path. She grabbed his shoulder, spun him around, and looked him dead in the eye.
“I’m giving you a chance,” she said—sharp, no room for argument. “Don’t screw it up.”
And then she was gone, door closing behind her, leaving Jack staring after her, somewhere between confused and amused. When he turned back, the room was quiet—Danny was shutting off the PlayStation.
Right.
He walked over. Danny didn’t even seem to realize they were alone until Jack stopped in front of him.
“What?” Danny snapped, clipped and defensive. He wasn’t about to let Jack see him like this. Not again.
Jack swallowed. His shoulders were tense, like every ounce of courage was shaking. “I… I’m sorry,” he said, voice low, almost unsteady.
“I loved you,” he continued. “I still do. And you deserved someone at your level… not me. I was terrified you’d eventually wake up and realize you were wasting your time on me. That’s why I left. I thought if I went first—if I changed, I could come back better for you.”
He stopped, searching Danny’s face for anything. A sign. A spark. Something.
Danny didn’t give away anything. He just went still.
“Don’t do this,” he said after a while. His voice was soft, but he met Jack’s eyes directly. Then he let out a quiet sigh, defeated.
“Just… don’t. Not here, not now. Not ever.”
“Danny, I want to fix this. Let me fix this,” Jack murmured, desperate.
“You can’t, Jack.”
Maybe it was his pride talking—
Danny didn’t care. It felt like the only thing he had left to stand on.
He turned and walked out, leaving Jack alone with a brand new broken heart.

“So you’re giving up,” Lula said, stuffing clothes into her suitcase without looking at him. They’d flown back to France for her things—Jack, Lula, and June, who’d gone for a coffee run. The apartment felt hollow, like someone had already moved out weeks ago.
Jack stood in the doorway, hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket so she wouldn’t see them shaking. “I’m doing what he told me to do,” he said quietly. He didn’t even bother trying to not sound defensive.
“Coward.”
He let out a breath. “Yeah. Maybe.”
Lula finally paused, turning to stare at him. Jack didn’t meet her eyes. He was staring at the floor, like it held answers he’d missed.
“Jack, he still loves you,” she said, slower this time, as if she needed him to actually hear it. “He’s hurt. And hurt people say things they don’t mean.”
“I know,” Jack whispered. “I know, Lu. But he was clear, and I…”
His voice trailed off. He swallowed. “I don’t think I can take hearing him say it again.”
Lula clicked her tongue, annoyed, but there was concern under it. “I’m going to throw you out the window, Wilder.”
A weak smile flickered across his face, there and gone. “Honestly? Might save me the trouble.”
That made her freeze. Just for a second.
She zipped the suitcase shut. “Talk to him.”
Jack looked up, eyes tired, defeated in a way that made him seem older. “Again?”
“Yes, again.” Her tone was firm, not unkind. “Because you don’t want this to be how it ends. And neither does he.”
Jack didn’t argue.
He just nodded, small and hopeless.
“Now come help me get this downstairs,” Lula said, voice softer than before.
Jack moved to lift the suitcase, but his hands lingered on the handle like he needed a second just to gather himself before he could breathe again.

“What do you want, pomegranate or boysenberry?” asked Bosco, browsing the fridge in their little apartment—well, former little apartment.
After Charlie took over Vanderberg’s business and worked to make things right for the exploited villages, he put a portion of his paycheck—yes, he had started working there, towards improving their living situation.
“Dude, I said I wanted a drink,” Merrit said dryly. He laughed as he accepted the can anyway. “Let’s give it a try.”
“Kids today,” Danny commented casually. Bosco rolled his eyes, but the faintest hint of a smile tugged at his lips— something he’d never admit.
Meanwhile, June, Lula, and Henley were scheming up an all-girls magic group.
Merrit waved his hand for attention. “Alright, ladies, enough plotting—time for a toast.”
June was about to accept a drink from Bosco when Henley stopped her. “Not happening. You’re nineteen.”
June frowned, unused to being mothered, and was about to protest when Lula shushed her and subtly slid a drink under the table.
“I’ll be the first one to say it— I’m going to miss you, guys.” Everyone froze for a beat. Merrit chuckled, trying way too hard to hide the faint pink creeping up his neck. Classic Merrit.
“I was just thinking the same thing,” Henley said, smiling in that tired, wistful way. She was really going to miss both her old friends and the new ones they’d made.
“Yeah… me too,” Danny muttered reluctantly, eyes fixed on the floor, pretending he wasn’t feeling it at all.
“Dammit, I love you guys,” Lula said, all feelings on full display, no shame.
While everyone was saying their goodbyes, the new kids were starting to feel it—the reality that these people they’d idolized might not be part of their lives anymore. Then, a knock came at the door.
“No one’s supposed to know where we are,” Charlie said, a flicker of paranoia in his voice. Bosco rested a hand on his shoulder, steadying him.
June grabbed the box and gave it a small shake.
“Who’s it from?”
“It doesn’t say,” she replied, already tearing it open. Clearly, no one else was going to do it.
It was the same thing they’d seen back at the magic shelter in France.
Jack rectified his mistake, carefully unlocking it just like June had taught him. He exhaled as the mechanism clicked—and a hologram flickered to life. Dylan Shrike.
Merrit blinked, mouth slightly open. “Wait… that can’t be…”
Henley froze, eyes widening for a fraction of a second. “I’m going to kill him myself.
Danny grabbed her arm, voice low but firm. “Stop it.”
Bosco leaned forward, hand gripping the edge of the table. “Holy—“
The kids scattered slightly, whispering excitedly. Jack stayed still, a grin tugging at his lips, absorbing the weight of the past, the mystery of Dylan’s disappearance— and now this.
Dylan’s hologram continued, welcoming the new kids into The Eye as if he hadn’t just faked a prison sentence and vanished.
“And for the rest of you, you thought your work was done? Think again, team. You’re just getting started,” Dylan said.
Danny grinned, mischief sparking in his eyes. “What’s the next trick?”

“Do you want to get out of here?”

Jack grabbed her hand, weaving through the crowd toward the exit of the low class bar they were in—a common place for a quick fuck.
The girl’s hand was narrow, all bone and tendon. Long, slender fingers wrapped around his. Manicured. French tips. Not what he prefered.
Her voice was high-pitched. Flirty.
He’d had a fair amount to drink. His vision was blurry. Perfect.
“Please, Jack,” the girl murmured, grabbing his hair and pulling it. It hurt just right. Jack laughed and went to devour her neck.
She smelled sweet, like vanilla. He frowned, and pulled back slightly. It wasn’t right. He lowered his mouth to her collarbone, pressing long, lazy kisses into her skin.
She giggled, hands fumbling with his belt. She got it off and tossed it aside. Jack kicked his jeans away, then reached for hers.
“So perfect,” he murmured, mostly to himself.
He knelt, pulled down her panties, wasted no time.
The girl moaned. “Jack.”
He tried to tune it out, and focused on working his tongue against her folds.
If there was one thing he was good at—aside from magic, it was this.
Once. Twice. Again.
He kept going until she yanked his hair, pulling him away. His lips were soaked; her thighs would burn tomorrow from his subtle stubble.
“Couch,” she demanded.
He obeyed, grabbing his pants on the way and pulling out a condom.
It was dark. No lights on. She looked just like him. Short hair. Lean figure.
Jack didn’t need much more.

One night, he decided to mix it up. Instead of the same bar, he went to a club—one of those high-end ones he kept hearing about.
Instead of his worn out, old jacket, he wore a brand-new one. A gift he hadn’t used yet.
He looked at himself in the mirror and smiled. Or tried to. Whatever.
Maybe he should’ve accepted Lula’s invitation. It would have been better than going alone.
Too late. Lula was probably already asleep. The early bird.
Without thinking any further, he grabbed his keys and left.
Getting in was easier than expected. He flashed his fake ID and the door opened.

He slipped it back into his pocket and went straight to the bar.
“An Old Fashioned,” he told the bartender.
As he scanned the crowd, his breath caught.
Blue eyes. Those blue eyes.
Danny.
Danny’s waist was held by a blond guy who looked at him adoringly.
Jack’s chest tightened.
Danny. His Danny.
Jack didn’t notice when the drink was placed in front of him. Didn’t remember handing over Liam’s credit card.
His eyes stayed locked on Danny.
Danny, glowing. Laughing. Dancing with that dickhead.
Jack downed the drink in one. Mind made up.

“Hey stud,” Danny said to his boyfriend, who looked up from his phone. “Gotta piss. Be right back.”
His boyfriend nodded. Danny kissed him quickly and headed off.
The club was packed. Luckily, the bathroom wasn’t.
Danny finished and zipped his jeans, freezing when he heard the voice he’d tried so hard to forget.
“Danny.”
His hands moved faster. He turned on the sink.
“Danny, please.”
Danny washed his hands, the running water filling the silence.
He turned to leave—but Jack was blocking the door.
“Move.”
“Please, hear me out,” Jack begged.
“Hear what?” Danny snapped. “Your million excuses? Your ‘I didn’t do it’? I saw you, Jack. I saw the chats. I saw everything.”
“I didn’t do what you think,” Jack said quickly. “I love you. Please, Danny. You have to believe me.”
The worst part was how certain he sounded. How sincere.
Danny swallowed hard and shook his head.
“I caught you,” he said quietly. “Don’t you remember?”
Jack sighed. “Love, it was one time. It’ll never happen again. I was drunk. Wasted.”
“I remember,” Danny said. “Move, Jack.”
Instead, Jack said. “Please.”
“Move.”
Jack stepped closer, invading Danny’s space. Danny stepped back.
“Please, baby,” Jack murmured.
Danny hated that it still worked.
That voice. Smooth. Sweet. Like it had never lied one day in his life. Innocent on all charges.
Tears burned his eyes.
Jack. Always Jack.
Then, the memories came: the chats, the pictures, the audios Henley had shown him with pity.

Jack Wilder was a player. Who would’ve thought?
And people had worried about him breaking Jack’s heart.
“Move, Wilder,” Danny said sharply. “Unless you want me to do it myself.”
Jack chuckled. “Love, we both know you can’t.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure.”
“Danny?”
Danny looked past Jack to his boyfriend standing by the door, looking worried.
“Everything okay? You’ve been gone a while.”
He didn’t even glance at Jack. His focus stayed on Danny. He liked that.
“Yes,” he said, finding his smile again. “Sorry. Lost track of time.”
He slipped past Jack, pausing only to whisper in his ear, “Coward.”
“I ordered you a gin and tonic,” his boyfriend said, relief easing his voice.
“Perfect,” Danny replied, taking his hand.
The bathroom door slammed behind them. Probably Danny.
That night, Jack went home with a skinny guy with a mullet.
Easy fucks were everywhere.

Jack rolled his eyes. Like he cared.
“It’s terrifying how similar they all look.”
“It’s a gift,” Jack said. “Twinks can’t resist me.”
Lula snorted. “Charmer.”
Jack grabbed his backpack, put on his glasses, and ran for the door. Lula followed.
“So,” she said, “does that mean you’re over Danny?”
“Not really,” Jack muttered. “But he’ll come around.”
“He caught you, Jack. Like—caught you. Like saw your bare ass going to pound town—”
“And whose fault was that?”
“Don’t start,” Lula said. “Henley tricked me too. I’m a victim here.”
“She sweet-talked you for three minutes and you were already creaming your pants, May,” Jack shot back.
“You got sloppy.”
“Me?”
“You moved into Danny’s place and thought he wouldn’t find out?”
“Find out what?”
