Victory rolled their eyes at Nye as he tried to explain himself. It was uncanny how alike Preston and Nye were. âDude,â they said, shaking their head.Â
âAnyway, this is nicer than what they usually do for events.â
They nodded toward the spread of food and the decor; it was all a bit overwhelming. But they were hungry and didnât want to wait for food, so here they landed. Victory was about to speak again but their thought process was interrupted by the abrupt loss of light and music.Â
âWhat the fuck,â they mumbled, putting a hand on Nyeâs shoulder to keep him near.
It took a moment for their eyes to adjust to the dark, but once they did they slowly but surely pieced together â the backups were failing. The nature of their job was to deal with this kind of potential, but they never thought of it happening for real.
Nye looked around the room again, as if he hadnât noticed the decorations before that moment. âThis is the first Iâve been to, so they couldâve fooled me,â Nye admitted, with a one shouldered shrug.Â
Now that his attention had been brought back to the food laid out before them, he moved to make a step toward it, figuring that they would follow or at least stay close enough for them to continuing talking. But, just as Nye lifted his foot off the floor, the room went dark. Nye felt a hand grip his shoulder and could only assume it was Victoryâs. He responded ny reaching back for them, partially because he didnât know what else to do, and instinctively wanted to reassure them in some way. Nyeâs hand ended up covering theirs, both on top of his shoulder still.
âI assume this has never happened before?â
