Olivia (OC SoSu) was born because, like many RJ fans, I felt that the abrupt end to his story after Med-Tek was a disservice to him, Lucy and Duncan, and the story the game tried to tell. I asked, "What if Med-Tek was a failure", and an image of RJ braving a snowy mountainside to help Duncan appeared in my mind. He'd uncover a Vault where they tested Duncan's illness on residents, and he'd find Olivia there. Some Fallout Science would happen and I'd write a story where I follow RJ's journey back to Duncan.
Daydreams gave way to drafts which became my first-ever fanfiction, Long Time Running. Jack was born because, if I wanted to continue writing a canon divergent Fallout 4 story and send RJ and Olivia back to the Commonwealth, then I needed someone to be the canon Sole Survivor. Jack is RJ's best friend and was there when Med-Tek went bad; he also made arrangements to send RJ to the mountains.
Jack and Olivia's relationship is basically that of an adoptive father-daughter, though she's an adult. He and Nora wanted to adopt a baby girl after they had Shaun. Jack was a professional boxer before he was conscripted into the army; Olivia learned martial arts at Vault 150. Aside from that, they're personality opposites. Jack is outgoing and loves a party. Olivia is anxious and very reserved.
With RJ, Jack and Olivia are my protagonists in Long Time Running, which began as a story about fixing RJ's story, then morphed into also examining how post-apocalyptic relationships between best friends change as one develops paternal feelings and the other feels romantic interest as they add a new member to the gang. It's so fun to write trio dynamics!
Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.
another addition as far as physical media goes there is the encyclopedia of national dress (that i still need to buy myself bc this kind of thing is super important to my sort of fantasy designing) but yes i do agree i wish there was EVEN MORE documentation on this
