or why the infamous “Bug” might not be what it seems

There’s clear evidence that Kosaku Anakubo had no character sheets available when he started drawing the Pokémon Manga, but instead based his designs off the original Japanese 1st gen sprites.     

Long story short, I believe he just misinterpreted Diglett’s green sprite for a bug Pokémon, and thought the nose was its mouth and the soil were its legs. He might have hinted at his “mistake” in the 1997 special episode he drew for the Pokémon Fanbook. 

We also get a glimpse of Diglett’s mouth and lower body… which is… nonexistent.The parallels are striking.

As to why Anakubo didn’t have Sugimori’s model sheets… it’s a mystery. Official Sugimori art was easily accessible by anyone in 1996 after the official release of the games, has he drawn the manga before RG came out? My fringe crackpotty brain used to think that he had been given in fact an earlier batch of Sugimori models which included some Missingno. , but no… no… those are just male genitals with eyes and whiskers. Good job  Anakubo, good job.
