Jughead sat silently at his normal booth at pops, writing his novel with his slick black wireless headphones covering his ears and beanie. That was the present Betty got for him on his 16th birthday. It was only after her got the headphones he realized how much he loved listening to music while writing. The way the music sucked him away from the real world. The way he could just close his eyes and forget everything in the world and just write. Just write until he can no longer feel his fingers.Â
Everyone knew that if you saw jughead sitting at a booth with his headphones on, you donât talk to him. Thatâs when he was in the zone. And everyone followed these rules, well except one person. Betty. She would completely ignore the fact that he wouldnât focus on her and sat there anyway. They would just sit there for hours, him with his headphones on, typing away, and her, sitting there sipping an old fashioned vanilla milkshake while reading one of her worn out books.Â
Every single day that Jughead just sat there, Betty would come down, try to talk to him, with no success. Finally, one day, when Betty sat up Jughead looked up from his laptop and smiles.
âHey Betsâ he said, a small smile forming on his face. Betty just smiled and looked back down at her book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Jughead slipped off his headphones and let them rest on the back of his neck while closing his laptop halfway.
âBets?â he asked, tilting his hide to the side.
âYeah Jug?â she said, letting her hand rest on the page she was on.
âWhy didnât you answer me?â he said, reaching across the table to grab his girlfriends hand.
âJug, Itâs like an unwritten rule that we donât talk to you when you have your headphones on. We donât want to distract you when your writing.â she said, rubbing her thumb over Jugheadâs thumb. Jugheadâs eyebrows furrowed together in confusion as he pulled his hand away from his girlfriends to adjust his beanie on his head.Â
âYou mean, people ignore me because of my headphones?â he asks, moving his hands back from his head to her hands.
âWell, yeah. You get super into it and if someone tries to talk to you, you canât hear them and you donât talk to them,â she said, continuing to rub her soft fingers over his rough ones. Jughead just looked down at his hands, not meeting his girlfriends eyes. âJug, itâs not a bad thing. You just get super into your work. Itâs actually kind of cute. I like seeing you work.â
A small blush crept up on Jugheadâs face and a small smile joined it. âThanks Bets. Just to let you know,â he said, leaning over the table to whisper in her ear, âyou can make me take my headphones off whenever you want.â
Betty just smiled and closed her book. âI have to go Jug, my mom will kill me if Iâm not home before curfew,â Betty stood up and gave Jughead a kiss on his cheek then a kiss on his lips. âIâll see you tomorrow Jug.â
The next day Jughead was sitting at the same booth in the same restaurant with the same pair of slick black headphones wrapped around his greasy black hair and old knitted beanie. He was sucked into the world of music typing like theres no tomorrow on his laptop. He continued to look up, waiting for his girlfriends to come and sit across from him like she has been doing for the past few days.Â
When Betty finally walked in, with her ponytail bobbing up and down, backpack slung over one of her shoulders casually. She walked up to Jughead and sat across from him, smiling. Pop brought her normal old fashioned vanilla milkshake, as Jughead slipped his headphones off of his head.Â
âHey Betsâ he said, closing his laptop halfway.
Betty just smiled, âHey Jug? Put your headphones back on.â she said, reaching over the table to put his wireless headphones back on his head and opening his laptop back open. Jughead had a puzzled look on his face, but it formed into a smile as she reached into her backpack and pulled out a pair of slick pink wireless headphones, that matched his perfectly. She opened her book and began reading.
âHey Bets? Nice Headphones.â He said with a smile.
