Charlotteâs eyes blinked a couple of times, a bit surprised that she was going to receive care this quickly. âO-ohâŚitâsâŚitâs really alright? T-thank you so much IâŚIâŚI umâŚâ Charlotte wasnât entirely the best at conversation, she often struggled to find the right words to give her gratitude.
The small child gave a subtle little nod upon being asked to come with her, following the doctorâs lead, albeit with her steps pausing every so often so her eyes could briefly scan the room she was in, showing that she was ever so slightly hesitant. She hadnât been in a medical wing before, thus some parts of her instincts were telling her to be cautious, even though she was aware that there truly wasnât any danger here.
She did take notice of their words of comfort, giving a timid little nod as she stepped forwards into the room.
ââŚIâve um. Iâve been trying to eat whenever the others give me stuff to eat. Iâve been trying to restrict myself becauseâŚw-well. Before I distorted, when i was a normal human, I could never get a chance to eat. AndâŚ.and after I distorted, I couldâŚhardly stop eating. BecauseâŚno matter how much I eat my body still feels like itâsâŚI still feel like Iâm starving. So itâsâŚitâs hard to stop when I start⌠Itâs like IâmâŚitâs like Iâm in an endless cycleâŚI-I really wanna keep eating. But IâmâŚIâm scared I wonât be able to stopâŚâ
She realizes that she was unintentionally avoiding the question, and tries to get back on track. ââŚI havenât eaten since Iâve waken up, noâŚMy body justâŚstarts eating whatever I get my hands on. If it can fit in my mouth then I justâŚswallow it whole. But I still feel weak with hungerâŚâ
When asked if she had hit her head, she tried to run through the scenario in her head a few times. ââŚI remember passing out after the pain got too much. I thinkâŚI think my vision faded before I hit the ground. ItâsâŚitâs possible? I think it sounds like something that probably might have happenedâŚbut I um..I was knocked out before theâŚ.theâŚimpact? âŚThatâs the right word, right?â
Upon hearing that it would sting, she paused for a moment, before trying to give a small nod. ââŚUmâŚhow bad will it sting? Will it hurt a lot? âŚI think I canâŚI think I can handle itâŚb-but umâŚhow bad is the sting? Will I be crying in agony o-orâŚ?â
The more that she listened to charlotte, the more that she couldnât help but to feel so bad for her. It sounded like that she had gone through a lot, even before whatever this distortion was that changed her body into looking more like a spider. So, she was going to make sure that she got the absolute best care that she could muster, even if the amount of care that she could give was limited because of so many unknowns that made Charlotte different than normal. But that was just a challenge she was going to have to deal with.
âI wonât mince any words and say it will be very little pain. However, the pain will be brief, and youâll be much better off after it alright?â Her voice and tone was soft as she got out the hydrogen peroxide and some cotton balls and put some of it on the cotton ball. She saw the wounds and would put the soaked cotton ball on one of the wounds. A sharp stinging sensation would be able to be felt and the stuff immediately started to bubble up.
She did the same for the rest of the wounds, watching as they were bubbling which meant that germs and other foreign stuff was being taken care of. Of course, it was going to hurt for a bit, bit was either that or having an infection which would make things a lot worse. Once she was done with that, she got out the bandages and started to put them on the wounds. âKeep these on here, alright? Theyâll help the cuts heal.â
The burns would be helped with ointment, but now there was another question that was on her mind. âSo, your eating thing. I admit that I donât know much about your specific situation. Obviously, something such as a âdistortionâ does not exist where I come from. However, I must ask that you give me as much information that you can about it. Like, is the reason why you can eat like that because of your distortion? Or is it something else?
She wasnât really sure and thatâs why she was asking anyways. âWhen people around here are in extreme poverty, it can go in a similar manner; hoarding food, eating it and feeling like they can never get full, all because the value of food for them went away once they got access to it again. It can also be the opposite where they continue to see food as such a valuable commodity. My point is, itâs a messed-up situation, and any information that you can give me might provide me a proper way to help your situation. As much as I can with the resources I have on hand.â
Charlotte tried to take a deep breath. Well...at the very least she was mentally prepared for the pain. The moment she felt her dirtied wounds covered by the hydrogen peroxide, a squeaking sound emit from her lips as her hands gripped tightly at the fabric of her dress, her teeth gritting tightly as she felt the painful sensation.
All things considered? Charlotte was handling the sting a lot better than she had originally assumed she would have. That's not to say she didn't emit several additional squeaks of pain each time she felt her wounds flare up with pain, but at the very least she was capable of staying relatively still to let the kind doctor do her job. Well, there were a couple of times near the beginning where she struggled to sit still admittedly, but for the most part considering her age and her flighty nature, she handled it better than she had expected.
Once the stinging was finally over, Charlotte could feel a breath of relief escape her lips, glad that the worst was over with. Her body would shiver a couple of times as Charlotte tried to keep still to allow Tae to apply the bandages onto her. When Charlotte was asked about the Distortion, she paused, trying to remember the details that she knows about it.
"...There's...a lot I don't know about it. But um...as much as it...complicates my life, it...it has some up sides? Like...it makes me a lot stronger. The usual...sicknesses I had felt a lot more...tolerable? ...My arms grew bac-"
She paused. Right. She had to provide context for that.Â
"Um...Right before I distorted I was...kidnapped. C-cannibal chefs tried to eat me, y'see? Apparently they think stressed meat tastes...a lot better. So my arms were...chopped off. Shortly after that is...when it happened. When I transformed. My arms grew back...and there was six of em' too! Now that I was...distorted, my body was a lot....I was a lot stronger. I was able to actually...fight. It was like...all these instincts of just...wanting to survive all came full circle and I just..."
Her hands gestured a few times as she stuttered, trying to find the right words to say.
"...I went feral. It was like...I acted like a savage animal that could hardly see straight. Just...on instincts to consume and survive. U-um...Right after they were...."
She paused once again. Charlotte didn't want to exactly clarify 'how' she had disposed of the chefs, thus she had decided to not go into detail.
"...I was alone for...for long enough for...I just started hearing voices in my head. I think my conscience was just...so desperate for...for someone, anyone to comfort me that...w-well. I started to try and imagine someone's voice. Someone who could comfort me when I was acting...when I was acting savage. I tried to imagine someone who could...I guess...act as a parental figure at the time I needed it most and...w-well. I sort of just...made an imaginary friend named Carmen to help me...sort of just...reel back some sort of control...."
Charlotte paused, realizing that was off topic, trying to skip ahead once again. "...I um. I found out I can...I can turn stuff to string? I could make...I could make web-like materials and...I could make weave cloth together in...in a miraculously short amount of time. It's...it was so strange I...I tried to sew before but...all I could make before my distortion was a bunch of...t-they were practically tattered rags. It's...how I tried to make money on the streets. I....I started to work myself practically half to death in an effort to make something before...now I can just...make them with such such little effort.â
She realized that she hadnât yet explained about the correlation between her hunger and her distortion as of yet. â....Iâve always been hungry for...for a large portion of my life. Iâd eat...Iâd eat anything I could get my hands on, even before my distortion. It...sort of just, turned into a habit of me trying to bite down on...whatever was small enough to fit into my mouth. To test if anything I could find was...edible. After I transformed I couldnât...I couldnât find anything that I couldnât eat. My mouth just...started to grow larger when I opened it up, like...as if my entire jaw just unfurled to consume something. And...Iâve had a much easier time...accessing food at the mansion that...one of the first days here I just...well. I consumed the entire fridge...l-literally. All of it was...consumed. Metal and all. And...I still felt hunger. Thatâs...thatâs when I realized something wasnât right.â
She began to rub her head. There was definitely a lot of common themes with her past life and her distortion. "...I've seen...other distortions too. Um. Well. More so Iâve...heard about them from others. I-I mean Iâve seen some but...um. Well... Most distortions seem to just...lose their humanity entirely. Distortions are...I don't think they're ever the same. They all turn into entirely different...weird monsters. I heard one distortion had their head inflate like a balloon before literally popping! One really nasty one was....was a giant playing on a piano made of hundreds of itâs victimâs corpses, and...and..."
Charlotte began to feel her breath growing a little more shaky as she kept remembering how horrid these monstrosities could become. "...Some distortions can turn...really terrifying and really...really bad and...I'm scared that...that one day I'll turn into something worse. That one day I'll wake up and... and lose my mind. That Iâll... I'll end up like one of those giant city-consuming monsters that e-end up having to be put down..."
Charlotte didn't realize how loud her voice was getting as her mind began to race. Her head soon leaned into her hands the moment she felt a familiar warm liquid begin to form in the corner of her eyes.
"...I-I'm scared. I don't...I don't know what will happen and...and I don't know how...I don't know how to get help."
