This fic is basically my idea of how the relationships between our holy trinity (Casey, Liv, Alex) who were clearly written gay and then just left buried in subtext and scene chemistry would have looked if done properly (and written for cableđ) so most chapters will revolve around actually episodes until after S19E19 "Sunk Cost Fallacy" So please enjoy the inner workings of my ridiculous brain, I will try to stick as close to source material and character as I can <3

âHey, can we talk?â Liv lingered in the doorway. Her face was different, the expression was one that could only be described as desperate.
Casey jumped, startled, and quickly slid the bottle of scotch next to the couch. âAbout what, Liv?â as much as she tried not to sound bitter there was no getting around it.
âUs? I owe you the truth.â Livâs face softened as she looked longingly at her ADA. âI owe you a lot more than that, but I can start there?â She let go of the door frame and started to move forward into the office.
Casey scoffed and nodded her head a few times before swallowing hard, âYeah? Whatâs that, that I was just a way to bide your time until Alex came back?â
âWhat? No.â Liv frowned, âThatâs not it at all, in fact none of this has anything to do with Alex.â She stepped closer to the redhead, wanting nothing more than to reach out and pull her close.
âThen what?â Casey questioned, her eyes filling with tears as she looked into the brunetteâs rich brown eyes. She was fighting back the tremble that was starting to form in her lower lip, âTell me.â
Olivia paused, trying to drink in the way Casey still looked at her adoringly before she told her all the things that could change everything forever. âIââ
âHey, uhm-- sorry to interrupt but weâve got a case.â Elliot hung on the door frame popping his head in. He couldâve kicked himself right about then, but he had no choice but to intercede. âSeems like a doozy.â
âI gottaââ Liv gave a half-hearted smile and threw her thumb towards the door. âCan we finish this later, please?â
Elliot caught eye contact with Casey long enough to mouth âIâm so sorry.â
The litigator nodded at him and then turned her attention back to Liv, âUhh yeah,â she cleared her throat, âRaincheck.â
âThanks Case.â The detective reached out and placed her hand lightly on the redheads arm, gave her a warm smile, and walked out.
Casey closed the door behind them and sat back down on the couch. She pulled the bottle out from where she stashed in and examined the note again. âFor another lifetime- Aâ âBut what about this lifetime?â the ADA muttered to herself, âWhat do I do with this?â
***
Liv and Elliot pulled up a brief time later at the home of Denise Eldridge. The arrived to find her screaming at PD to arrest her daughters boyfriend. That she came home and caught them together but she was a minor where her boyfriend Justin was not.
âHeâs in there raping my daughter!â Mrs. Eldridge bellowed. âI took his clothes so he couldnât get away.â
***
Back at the precinct Olivia walked into the interrogation room. Before she had a chance to even utter a word, Carrie piped up.
âIs Justin okay?â The teenager asked nervously.
âHeâs fine,â Liv said bluntly, âCarrie, did he force you?â
âForce me to do what? Kiss him?â Carrie rolled her eyes as she paced the room, dodging the detectiveâs question.
âTo have sex with him,â Liv replied beginning to lose her patience.
âHe doesnât force me to do anything. And we didnât have sex.â
Across the hall Cragen was consoling an angry Mrs. Eldridge while Carrie asked Liv about âa boy who divorced his parents.â The brunette detective tilted her head, she saw a lot of her younger self in the teen. It seemed like yesterday she was in a similar predicament with her own mother. She explained to the young girl what it meant to be an emancipated minor and that the only way for that to happen was for Denise to be declared unfit or sign away her parental rights. As they exited the interrogation room Mrs. Eldrige raced across the bullpen screaming at Carrie and demanding a rape kit much to the teenagerâs dissent.
Liv met them at the hospital where she explained to Carrie that if they found semen from her boyfriend they wouldnât need her outcry statement. Just then the doctor walked in, and the girlâs mother demanded he perform a rape exam. A few seconds later another woman walked in, introducing herself as Simone Bryce, Carrieâs attorney. Denise just blew a gasket as the doctor was instructed to leave the room.
***
Olivia took her jacket off as she arrived back in the bullpen, âWhereâs Justin?â
âSent him home.â Elliot said leaning over his desk, scouring over his notes. âHeâs not gonna run, we can collar him at any time.â
âFor what?â the brunette looked at him, confused.
âEndangering the welfare of a child?â he looked up and then back down continuing to fill out his DD-5s.
A look of shock ran across his partners face, âWhat good is that gonna do?â
âWellâIt was statutory rape.â Elliot said nonchalantly.
âYeah I know the law,â Liv retorted, âIâm just trying to see the best way through this, for Carrie.â
âOkay sheâs fifteen, heâs twenty-one.â He put his hands on his hips, his agitation growing with his partner. This seemed to be becoming an ongoing issue, them not agreeing completely on guilty parties. The incident with the art professor ran through his head as he spoke, âHeâs breaking the law by having sex with her.â
âElliot! The mother is using us, just like she used the doctor to try to strap her down on the table and force her legs open.â Liv shouted making her way around her desk towards Elliot. âWould you that to one of your daughters?â
âMy daughters have nothing to do with this.â Elliot snapped.
âYou really want to retraumatize Carrie? Let her mom drag her through the courts and bully her some more?â
Elliot was saved from a more scathing tongue lashing when Cragen bellowed for Olivia to meet him in his office. He let her know that Denise Eldridge called screaming at 1PP that Liv had a childrenâs rights attorney waiting for them at the hospital. While getting her ass handed to her, Denise Eldridge popped back up in the squad room with all of Carrieâs bedding, demanding the detectives âdo their jobsâ before once again storming out.
***
Liv and Elliot walked into Caseyâs office later that afternoon to check on their cases. The ADA stood up from her desk, obviously perturbed.
âSo what? You guys couldnât deal with Denise Eldridge, so you sic her on me?â She stared directly at Elliot, a pit sunk in her chest, she couldnât bare the though of eye contact with Olivia right now.
âWhat happened?â El asked, shaking his head.
âOh, she blew in here with her shopping bag,â the disdain in Caseyâs voice was palpable, âsaying you guys werenât doing anything about her daughter. She wanted me to charge you for not arresting Justin Sharp.â She pointed at Liv, she could feel her jawline tremble. This time it was Olivia who looked away.
âSo what do you want us to do?â Stabler walked back towards them after grabbing a bottle of water off the table.
âDid he rape Carrie?â Caseyâs patience was dwindling.
âLetter of the law, yeah. But we canât prove it. The sex was consensual. You charge him with endangering a minor, first offense, heâs not gonna do any time.â The brunette argued.
Casey scoffed, she hated when the detective was smug, but knew she was right. âGo advise Mrs. Eldridge that unless she comes back with picture proof, weâre not prosecuting Justin.
***
Upon arrival at the Eldridge residence Liv and Elliot discovered that Mrs. Eldridge had been murdered and swiftly called CSU to the scene. After the scene was processed the detectives set out to find Carrie and Justin, having more than a hunch that they were behind this.
As they drove Elliot finally decided to break the tense silence, âSoâthings seem tense still between you and Novak. Iâm guessing you havenât told her anything yet?â
Liv gave a bittersweet laugh, âThatâs what I was trying to do this morning when you pulled me away.â
âShit, Liv. Iâm sorry.â He hung his head.
âItâs fine, maybe sheâs better off not knowing anyway.â She shrugged as she fought back the urge to cry.
âI think we both know thatâs not true.â He turned his head and raised his eyebrow at his partner.
âNo, but I really canât talk about this right now.â Liv put her sunglasses on and leaned her head against the glass to stare out the passenger side window.
***
When Simone Bryce got back to her office that afternoon she found Olivia waiting for her, arms crossed. âI know she called you Simone.â
               âHow do you know that?â
Found the cell phone they switched with a friend and yours was the last outgoing call.
âYes Carrie called me,â Bryce said flatly as she made her way across the office to put down her books.
âDid she tell you where she is?â Liv inquired following close behind.
âYou know I canât tell you that.â Simone said flatly as she picked up papers from the fax machine.
Olivia ran up behind her, infuriated, âThis is no time for legal crap, Simone!â
***
Casey scoffed, âSheâs right!â As she hurried towards the steps of the courthouse, Liv following closely on her heels.
âHow?â Liv pleaded, âOur witness says that Carrie was kidnapped!â
The ADA shook her head in protest, âIt doesnât matter. The only way Simone Bryce can break privilege is if Carrie tells her that she was abducted.â She stopped her and tried to break away from the conversation she desperately didnât want to be having, âListen Iâm late.â
âAsk for an adjournment.â The detective retorted.
Casey was getting annoyed at this point. Why couldnât Liv see how uncomfortable this was for her? âThere is nothing I can do to help you.â
âYes, Casey there is.â She stopped the ADA in her tracks and softly grabbed her wrist. The brunette tried hard not to stare but her eyes were drawn to the redheads soft, full lips as she spoke. âGet me a subpoena to dump Simone Bryceâs phone.â
Casey scoffed again, âAnd when the DA asks me why I need to know whoâs calling the âMother Teresa of Childrenâs Rights,â what do I tell him?
âThat youâre trying to save a young girlâs life.â Liv was desperate to get her point across to Casey.
The redhead bit her lip, rolled her eyes and walked away only to turn back, âSimone Bryceâs conversations are privileged. The numbers of the people who called arenât.â Her face softened and she felt a pull in her chest, gravity lingering, begging her forward. She forced herself to walk away but as she did she could feel Livâs eyes on her, the way she used to when she was getting out of the shower and changed for bed. She felt it until she disappeared through the metal detectors.
               ***
TARUâs phone dump of Simone Bryceâs phone revealed there were several calls made from a small town upstate. Liv and El hopped into the sedan and headed up there straight away.
Elliot pulled open the door to the rustic diner off the main highway and walked inside, Liv following closely behind.
ââScuse me,â he spoke up, making eye contact with a worker across the room.
âSit wherever youâd like.â The man smiled as he greeted them.
Elliot flashed his shield, âWish we had the time.â He handed the gentleman two pictures, âHave these two kids been in here today?â
The worker reached out his hand to take the picture, âI didnât start til 4 but Iâll be glad to ask the day man.â He squinted in recognition at the second photo. âJustin Sharp?â He questioned.
âYou know him?â Olivia piped up.
âAll his life he used to work for me. His parents have a place about two miles away. Donât know why heâd be there now though, hunting season is over.â
Elliot scrunched up his face in concern, âAre there guns in the house?â
A short while and a call for backup later, Liv and Elliot arrived at the Sharp residence. Within a few minutes they had the place surrounded, the soft snow helping to mask the sounds of their footsteps. Guns drawn, Elliot pounded on the front door.
âWho is it?â Justin shouted from inside.
âDetective Benson, Justin open the door!â Olivia shouted back as she steadied her gait waiting for him to potentially come barreling out.
âPlease just leave us alone!â the young man pleaded.
âYouâre either coming out here or weâre coming in to get ya!â Elliot warned. âYou got guns, drop âem.â
âNo guns.â Justin stated nervously as he opened the front door.
Olivia quickly pulled Carrie off to the side as Elliot arrested Justin.
***
âHey,â Casey said timidly as she walked up to Liv. She studied the way her hair fell softly against the nape of her neck as the detective poured herself a cup of coffee. What she wouldnât do to wrap her arms around Oliviaâs waist-- the way she did no more than a few weeks before.
âHi,â the detectiveâs spoke, her words barely breaking, âCoffee?â she managed to get out awkwardly.
âSure, Iâd love some.â Casey tilted her head. Liv could hardly make eye contact, the pain in the young womanâs face almost unbearable.
âCarrie knows exactly what happened.â The brunette stated as she poured coffee into Caseyâs mug. Flashes of the day after their first date, the redhead leaning over her at the coffee station, ran through her mind.
âIf she doesnât give it up, the case against Justin is circumstantial at best.â The ADA had a far-off stare in her eyes as the same memories flooded to the forefront of her brain. She stirred her coffee mindlessly as she spoke. âYou know, Iâd really like to find those bloody clothes.â
âWhere would you like us to search that we havenât already?â Liv quipped as they walked up to Cragen.
âHe couldâve dumped them anywhere between here and Dutchess County.â The captain pointed at the map up on the board before Casey even had time to feel hurt.
âAll right, well then, Justin or Carrie have to talk.â The redhead sighed in frustration.
Elliot shook his head, equally frustrated, his aimed at Caseyâs stubbornness, âThey. Are. Not. Going to. Tell. Us. Anything.â  He enunciated. The ADA threw her head back and paced annoyedly.
Cragen stopped poignantly for a moment, âThey couldâve told someone else.â
               âLike who?â Casey scoffed.

Fin and Munch went to Carries high school to see if maybe she confided in a classmate or even a teacher, the chances were slim but so were the teams options. They were informed by the assistant principle that Carrie had not only skipped after her second period class but that they were often troubled by the girls behavior which led them to believe she had a bad homelife. As they walked the assistant principal told them that Carrie often fell asleep in class or just didnât show at all, but that Mrs. Eldrige had her tested and it wasnât drugs. The woman sighed as she relayed messages from teachers about lack of appropriate clothing and that her shoes were so worn they fell apart. She said Mrs. Eldrige didnât seem to be phased by any of that, however, when Carrie cut class the week before she had a truant officer dispatched to Justinâs job.

âI told him if Carrie came by the store again when she was supposed to be in school, Iâd have to let him go.â Greg, the manager, explained as he walked Liv and Elliot towards the back of the warehouse.
               âJustin a slacker?â Liv inquired,
âThe opposite.â The manager turned his head back towards her as they continued to walk. âAlways on time, great with the customers, hard worker. I want to promote him to assistant manager.â
âYeah?â Elliot pressed, âThen whatâs stopping you?â
âSpends too much time talking to his girlfriend on the webcam. Caught him again yesterday.â The manager sighed as he dropped off a stack of work orders.
âWe were told he wasnât scheduled to work yesterday?â Stabler furrowed his brow.
âHe wasnât.â Greg stated quickly, âI asked him to fill in for someone who was sick.â
Liv was taken aback, âWhat time did he come in?â
âRight at ten, but he left fifteen minutes later.â The young man stopped, turning around to face the detectives. âEmergency. He called back and two and asked for the rest of the week off.â
The crinkle in Elliotâs brow deepened. âAny chance that conversation he had with Carrie was recorded?â
After reviewing the footage, it was clear as day that Denise Eldrige was killed before Justin ever arrived at the apartment. The call showed Carrie begging him to come over and as she stood up, Liv and Elliotâs eyes widened, she was covered in blood.â
âCarrie got there first.â Liv said quietly. She had so many thoughts racing through her head, none of which she could articulate to say out loud.
***
Later that afternoon in the interrogation room, Justin sat on one side of the table with Langan as Liv began to grill him.
âThis is when you should talk Justin, they know that youâre innocent.â Langan said deadpan.
Stabler walked up and leaned over the back of his chair, âI know you love Carrie, but nobody is worth going to prison for twenty-five years.â
Justin still refusing to talk sat at the table in silence as he failed to make eye contact with either the detectives or his attorney and just stared stoically down at the table. Liv looked up at Elliot with a slight nod and headed to the next interrogation room where Carrie and Simone were waiting for her.
âWhatâs the problem here, Olivia.â The childrenâs services advocate snapped in frustration.
âYour client, whoâs been lying to us all along. Both to you and to me.â Liv spat back, walking across the room, and leaning back against the window, pressing her palms against the sill.
âIâm not lying,â the young girl said innocently.
Liv cut her off before she could say anymore, âSave it, Carrie. Justin told us everything.â
Carries voice got darker in tone, âHe wouldnât do that.â
The detective began to weave a tale pieced together from the webcam footage and forensics from the apartment suggesting that she had received all of this information from the girlâs boyfriend. All the while, Carrie continued to deny it as her lawyer kept scolding her and telling her not to talk. Simone tried insisting that they leave, but Carrie confessed once she thought Justin had betrayed her.
As they walked out of the interrogation room the young girl realized she had been lied to as they led Justin out of the other interrogation room at the same time.
âThatâs why I told you to keep quiet.â Simone said softly.
The young girl flew into a rage, trying to attack Olivia even while cuffed. They managed to pull her away. âYou lying bitch! You ruined my life.â She screamed through tears as she was dragged away from the bullpen.
âI really misjudged her,â the brunette detective leaned back in her chair and shook her head. âAll I saw was a desperate teen needing help.
âLook, I saw my daughter going out with a grown man, sometimes itâs hard to keep your own crap out of the work.â Elliot shrugged.
âSpeaking of crap,â Casey interjected as she walked into the bullpen. âPsych defense.â She held up the defenseâs motion as she came to a stop. Huang walking up beside her.
Liv stood up and stared at the ADA in disbelief.
Elliot read the motion out loud, âPre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder? PMS made her do it.â He scoffed.
âYouâre not buying this are you?â his partner asked incredulously.
âWhat that we canât control our emotions because weâre premenstrual?â the redhead asked mockingly, âthatâs bull.â
âWeâre not talking about PMS,â Huang interrupted, âWomen with PMDD experience severe headaches, depression, and paranoia. Sometimes they even hallucinate or hear voices.â
âThatâs not Carrie.â Olivia insisted, âAnger made her kill her mother.â
The doctor sighed, âJudging by the crime scene photos, itâs very possible she lost control of herself.â
âGreat,â Livâs tone became increasingly angry, âso sheâs gonna get off because of this Twinkie defense?â
âIâm not gonna let that happen,â Casey stated, the calmest and collected sheâd been around Olivia in weeks. She turned her attention to Huang, âExamine Carrie. Find me a way to beat Simone Bryce.â
***
After his examination George met Casey outside the courthouse. It may not have been snowing but it was still freezing outside in typical New York winter fashion. The ADA pulled her jacket tighter as she crossed the street.
âSo you believe her story?â she asked.
He tilted his head, âItâs consistent with PMDD. It couldâve triggered a manic outburst.â
âWell what about the calm after the storm,â Casey pushed as they headed down the steps.
Huang shrugged, âCarrie was dissociating. I read her medical report, heavy cramping and migraines are documented. If you add to that the mood swings and the fact that she was premenstrual when she killed her mother, then itâs classic PMDD.â
Casey furrowed her brow and turned her head towards him, âUgh, do you think a jury will really believe this?â
âThey have before.â
***
During court Justin refused to finish his testimony resulting in him being held in contempt and a recess for the case. As Liv exited the courthouse she ran into Melinda who was heading down the steps in the same direction.
âHey, you on a case?â Benson smiled as she quickened her pace to catch up with Warner.
âEldridge. Defense is recalling us. They must be desperate.â
âThey are. Carrieâs going down.â Liv stated as they continued to walk.
âSo now they want to dirty up her mother, portray her as a drunk.â Warner added.
Liv stopped her tracks, âWhat? Wait. Was she?â Her face contorted in concern.
Melinda sighed as she turned towards Olivia, âHer blood alcohol level was normal when she died but Denise Eldridge had advanced cirrhosis. Another two years it wouldâve killed her.â
***
Liv tried going home but she couldnât stop thinking about her conversation with Warner. Having grown up with Serena, something just wasnât sitting right with her. After pacing her apartment for a while she decided to head back to the crime scene for peace of mind. As she wandered through the Eldridge home she had flashbacks to her motherâs drinking and all the inconspicuous places she would hide liquor. Liv began pulling out bottle after bottle, from the hamper, the couch cushion, the chandelier. Denise Eldridgeâs underwear draw full of a hundred tiny airplane bottles. She tried to fight back tears as she thought about how many times she had seen her mother in a drunken stupor and then fight back rage as she remembered how even though it didnât kill her pathologically speaking, it was the biggest factor in her death. Then she thought about how many times she had stared down a bottle thinking about Casey and how she had self-sabotaged the only good thing that she had.
After a while Elliot walked up to the open apartment door to find Liv at the kitchen island where she had amassed over twenty full sized vodka bottles. He knocked softly and disrupted her intrusive thoughts. His partner still cradling one of the bottles, looking at it distraught.
âNo wonder I hated Denise so much.â Liv said with a despondent chuckle. âAll along Carrie was just trying to get me to protect her. Look at thisâ she scoffed as she picked up yet another bottle. âDenise didnât care about her daughter. All she cared about was where she was gonna get her next drink.â Her voice cracked as she spoke.
Elliot stopped by the sink and looked up at Liv as she leaned over the kitchen counter, âWhyâd you come here?â
âTo find out what else I was wrong about.â She said quietly walking into the next room.
Stabler scoffed as he squat down to look under the sink, âThese pots and pans havenât been used in so long they have cobwebs on them.â He reached under and pulled out something taped to the underside of the countertop. âHey, check this out, I found this underneath the cabinet.â Elliot exclaimed as he tossed his partner a packet. âBirth control pills.â
âPrescribed to Carrie by the free clinic?â Liv said as she studied the container. Suddenly as if a light went off in the detectives head she looked up, âCarrie was on day 6 of her period.â
Later that evening Liv said at the bar staring down a beer that she hadnât touched, zoned out, replaying the conversation from earlier that day when she confronted Simone and Carrie. The genuine hurt as Carrie told her the true story of why and how she killed her mother. She looked up as she saw Casey walking through the door.
âYou shouldnât have talked to Carrie and Brye without me,â the ADA said as she sat down.
âI know,â Liv said softly, she could barely look at her. She loved her so much it hurt, but she had screwed all of that up.
âYou did a good job with the birth control pills though.â Casey gave a half-hearted smile. She wanted to swoon at the detectives skilled find but she still ached for her. âThe jury will definitely convict.â
Olivia looked down and nodded. After a minute she looked up at the redhead, troubled. âPlead her out, Casey.â She said with tears forming in her eyes.
Casey tilted her head, confused, âYou just won it for us, why?â
Liv took a deep breath, she owed Casey this for a long time, this conversation, this honesty. âMy mother was an English professor. When I was sixteen I started dating one of her students. He was a senior, he was twenty-one years old. And he asked me to marry him. And I said yes because I wanted to get away from my motherâ she choked out.
The ADA nodded and looked down at the bar, she had no idea how to respond.
âShe found out, and she told me that if I didnât stop seeing him, she would have him kicked out of college. And I told her that I was moving out.â The brunette traced her finger along the rim of her glass as she spoke. âShe was halfway through a bottle of vodka, and she dropped it. It shattered all over the floor andââ Liv couldnât keep the tears from rolling out at this point, âshe picked up the jagged edge of the bottle and she, uh, she came at me. Screaming. âIâll never let anyone else have you.ââ
Casey focused intently on the story, horrified at what the woman she loves had been through.
âSo I kicked her. Hard.â Tears falling down Oliviaâs face as she spoke, her forearms rested on the bar, hands clenched. âAnd then I kicked her again. And she went flying across the room into the wall. Then she slid down to the floor.â She shook her head, staring off into the memory, âIâd never hurt her before. I ran out. I was so afraid.â
Caseyâs face softened, her bleeding heart and puppy dog eyes on full display, tears welling in her own eyes. Shakily she placed her hand on top of Livâs, âYou didnât kill your mother, Olivia.â She wanted nothing more but to pull her into her arms and squeeze her until the pain went away.
The brunette turned her eyes to meet Caseyâs, âI know what itâs like to want to.â She paused for a moment, âThatâs how I know Simone Bryce. I called her back then. She was a law student, and she helped me survive it.â
The counselor didnât know what to say, she was still in shock from the revelation. âWhy didnât Carrie say something?â
Liv spoke in a gentle, far-off voice, âBecause then the abuse becomes real. If you keep quietââ she trailed off, her eyes meeting Caseyâs again. ââyou can pretend itâs not.â
âWhere was your father in all of this?â the ADA asked quietly.
Liv grimaced, she knew she was going to have to tell Casey the truth. âRemember how I said my mother was an English professor?â she gave a bittersweet laugh, âShe was attacked and assaulted at Hudson University. So I donât know who my father is, as far as I know neither did she. And as it stands, I canât say that I want to.â Her eyes were red and swollen. âThatâs why Casey, thatâs why I did what I did. That case really got to me, and I kept thinking what if whatever evil genetics I inherited from my father began to rear their ugly head, or I became a drunk like my mother. I couldnât stand the thought that I could hurt you like that, no matter how slim of a chance, I couldnât take the risk. Not with someone Iâcare about.â
Casey went to lift her hand to wipe a tear from Livâs cheek when Liv stopped her, holding her other hand on top. She didnât want the counselor to let go. Casey tilted her head and nodded, then used her free hand to wipe the tears.
âWhere do we go from here?â Liv sniffled.
âWell, Iâd say things are still pretty complicated. I have a lot to process about my feelings. How bout we start withâfriends?â
âIâd like that.â Liv squeezed her hand tighter.

The next day in court Casey pulled Simone aside and worked out a plea deal of five years for manslaughter. After the trial had concluded Simone walked up to the ADA.
The redhead half smiled, âSheâll be in a juvenile facility, no hard time.â
âI polled the jury, eleven of them thought she was guilty.â The defense attorney stated, âYou had your Murder Two conviction.â
               âI know.â Casey nodded.
âWhyâd you plead her out?â               Â
Caseyâs face tempered, she bit her lip and shifted her gaze. Simone stopped for a minute and then understood. She turned her focus towards the back of the courtroom where Liv sat in the back row, her face contorted, haunted by painful flashbacks.
You can not tell me Olivia Benson threw the word "pugilist" out there like she just knew it off the top of her head. That is autistic pedantic speech, a ten dollar Harvard word--an Alex Cabot word. But you can't tell me, right?

Read Part 10
The alarm went off and Casey shot up bleary eyed. Another night on the sofa in her office had left her with a stiff neck and a migraine. This was the kind of thing she used to rely on Olivia to help with, but she guessed sheâd have to rely on some good old-fashioned over-the-counter pain relievers. She brought her hand up to rub the back of her neck when the door opened.
âOh, Iâ I can come back.â Of course it would be Liv. Olivia âHavenât Seen or Heard from Her Since She Left Her Key on The Counterâ Benson.
Casey cleared her through, âItâs fine, you need something?â She couldnât bring herself to make eye contact.
The brunette held up the stack of files in her hand, âI just had to drop off these fives. I didnât think youâd be here.â She looked over at the couch to see the blanket all sprawled out. âCasey did you sleep here?â
The redhead scoffed, âYou donât get to ask me that Olivia.â Her face went flush, her heart racing.
âIâIâm sorry youâre right.â The detective hung her head and turned to leave. She stopped right before she hit the doorway and turned around, âCasey, Iââ
The ADA looked up at her, lip trembling, âYou what? Led me on? Decided I wasnât what you wanted?â Her face dropped, âIs this because I told you that you were myââ
âNo of course not,â Liv interjected. âCasey I care about you more than you know and thatâs why I left.â
âOlivia that doesnât even make any sense. I thought I meant something to you. How can you say you care and then leave without a word. Not even an âItâs doneââ the attorney felt a single tear roll down her face that she quickly wiped away. Â
âBecause the minute I saw youââ she walked towards Casey, it was clear she had been crying for a while. âI wouldnât have been able to walk away. Please just know Iâm doing this to protect you. Please.â The brunette wanted to reach out and grab her so badly and hug her until everything felt better, until all of the cracks and breaks in both of them healed. âIâI gotta get back.â
The redhead nodded and motioned towards the door. She looked down at her cold coffee from last night and sighed, rubbing her face. The counselor checked herself in the mirror of her office bathroom and brushed her teeth before locking up and heading out to the street towards the coffee card.
âLarge black coffee and a bagel please?â she said, the vocal fry from lack of sleep apparent.
âYou okay Ms. Novak?â Paulo the coffee cart attendant asked her, âYou sound like you might be getting a cold. Here.â He handed her a small container of what seemed to be some kind of soup, âOn the house Ms. Novak.â
âNo Paolo itâs okay I just didnât sleep well, Iâm fine I promise.â She tried to hand the container back to him, which he promptly dismissed and waved her off. âThank you.â She mouthed with a small smile that made her dimple show.
âCasey?â She heard her name being called from the street. The redhead looked up to see Elliot walking towards her in his peacoat and newsboy hat. Shit. He jogged the rest of the way to catch up with her. âHey Case,â he looked at her with sad eyes, not something she was used to from Stabler. He was usually soâstoic.
âElliot donât,â She didnât know if he was going to try to defend Liv or tell her he was sorry, but she couldnât handle either right now. As hard as she tried to fight it her lip jutted out and started to shake.
âCase,â he wrapped his arms around her, âHey breathe kiddo, letâs go in your office okay?â She nodded and followed him inside. He closed the door behind them as she put her food and coffee down on her desk. Elliot sighed and leaned up on the arm of her sofa, âWhat happened?â
âI was hoping you knew?â she laughed sarcastically. âSheâs âprotecting meâ.â She mocked Liv using air quotes.
âFrom what?â Stabler squinted.
âFuck if I know. This all started when she put me in that chokeholdââ Casey started to explain.
âShe did what?!â Elliot jumped off the couch, jaw clenched, ready to tear into his partner.
âEl stop it wasnât like that.â
âThen enlighten me Casey because that sounds pretty bad.â The redhead could practically see steam coming out her friendâs ears.
âIt was about two weeks ago with the Lucas Biggs case. She saw that storage locker and she was having a night terror. It scared me, I tried to wake her up and when I did she put me in a chokeholdâbut she was still sleeping El. Yeah, when I finally got her up, I freaked out for a minute, and I yelled but I know thatâs not Liv.â She walked up closer to Elliot her arms folded and sighed, âbut after talking to Avery she just kept talking about how she might be a monster, that some kind of switch might flip?â The ADA scrunched up her face.
Stabler grimaced, âThat explains why she asked me if I was worried about how my kids would turn out.â
Casey still looked confused, âWhat do your kids have to do with this El?â
Elliot popped up and wrapped one arm around Casey and kissed her forehead, âItâs not my story to tell Novak. All I can do is try to get her to tell you. Okay?â He stepped back and placed his hand on the doorknob.
The attorney hesitantly shook her head, âYeah, okay.â She choked out.

After processing two crime scenes, the first the office building of Elaina Brevet, and second their home where her husband, Jason Brevet, was found brutally slain in much the same many. Tortured with slashed throats. Upon further investigation CSU found that Jason was tortured for the combination to the upstairs safe which according to OâHalloranâs new fancy technology was missing quite a large sum of money.
âThe Brevetâs are financial managers,â Cragen briefed Liv and Elliot as they passed the holding cell and into the bullpen, âNow why not invest the cash? Money in a safe doesnât earn interest.
âMaybe they were hiding it from the IRS?â Elliot suggested.
âOr their creditors,â Fin joined in from across the room, âI got the Brevetâs financials. Both houses mortgaged to the hilt. Credit card debt in the six figures. Maybe living large, they got in over their heads.â
Liv cocked her head, âWhy not pay off their bills with all that cash?â
âBecause then they would have to explain where it came from.â Munch called out from behind them as he hung up the phone. âI had the forensic accountants go over their books. Brevet Investments is nothing but a high ended pyramid scheme.â
Liv raised her eyebrows, âSo all of those huge profits from the past year were phony?â
âYeah,â Munch shrugged his shoulders, âthey take the money from one client, pay anotherâs dividends, take the rest for themselves.â
âSo,â Elliot pondered, âone of their investors got pissed off bad enough to kill em.â
Munch nodded, âyeah the kind you donât want to piss off in Cali and Bogota.â
âDrug money?â Finch questioned.
âYeah,â John sighed looking at the records, âand skimming it too, for one client in particularâfor one company in particular too out of Vegas called Casa Vega enterprises.â
Finn creased his brow, âDrug lord finds out somebodyâs ripping him off, heâd have to hit him quick to set an example.â
âCheck with narcotics,â the captain chimed in. See if Casa Vega rings any bells.â
âYou got it Cap,â Finn said grabbing his jacket as he motioned to Liv and Elliot, âI got a guy over there we can trust.â
As they head out Finn and Elliot lead the way chit chatting about different cases as Liv fell behind trying to get her arm in the sleeve of her jacket. âOh, shit, sorry.â She muttered, timing would not be her friend in this moment. As she stopped Casey opened the door to her office and the two women just about collided. The redhead dropped the stack of paperwork in her arms. They both bent down trying to scoop up the mess, âLeave it to me to find another way to ruin your day.â She let out a half-hearted chuckle as she tried to make light of the awkward situation.
âYeah, youâre uh, getting kind of good at that.â Casey teasingly chided, as she scooped up the rest of her papers. She caught a hint of Livâs perfume, and her heart jumped into her throat. She missed her something awful and being this close to her was killing her. The smile faded from her face when she remembered she wasnât really privileged to this familiar feeling with the detective, and she stood up. âIâhave to get back to work.â The counselor cleared her throat and looked down, âBe careful out there.â She mumbled and disappeared back into her office. She leaned up against the other side of the door, clutching her files to her chest and began to sob. The tears rolled down the file jackets as she tried to stifle her cries.
Fin and Elliot watched the exchange from the end of the hallway as Olivia stood frozen in place, broken. The brunette could hear Casey crying and it was destroying her. She knew this was her own doing, but she couldnât stop herself from still being in love with Casey.
âSomething going on with the lovebirds?â Finn looked at Elliot with uncertainty. Â
Elliot sighed and shook his head, âLiv called it off, Casey is devastated. Iâm still trying to figure out what happened.â
âAwh shit, I was rootinâ for those two.â Finn said as the brunette walked up.
âRooting for who?â The detective raised her eyebrow at her coworker as she approached, she pushed her jacket back to stuff her hands in her pockets.
âUhh, Eddy Curry and Stephon Marbury, thought they were gonna take the lead in points this season.â Detective Tutuola spat out extemporaneously.
Liv pursed her lips together and nodded her head slowly as if she only half believed him. âWe ready?â
*****
After meeting Mike at a diner he explained to them how the money laundering scheme for Casa Vega worked and how they get others to write checks for investments with sob stories and then pay the investor back with cash. After reviewing the list he recognized a name and decided to tag along for the questioning as a favor to Finn since he was familiar with the perp. Just as Mike had suspected she did in fact write checks to Casa Vega in exchange for cash but was more than willing to give up a name in exchange for lighter punishment for a family member doing time in Sing-Sing.
When they arrived at the apartment, Mike and Elliot kicked in the door. There was an eerie silence that is usually only found in an abandoned apartment.
âGuess no oneâs home.â Mike shrugged as they began their sweep. âSenor Montoya! Policia!â He called out.
âMr. Montoya! Police!â Liv called out behind him.
As they made it passed the threshold, Elliot peered over the couch to see a man and a woman lying face down, shot execution style. He leaned over to check for vitals. âDead.â
Liv leaned over as well, âBut not for long. The bodies are still warm.â
âIn here!â Mike called out from the back of the residence.
Liv and El followed the sound of the narcotics detectiveâs voice to one of the bedrooms, where they found him standing next to a twin-sized bed. A small child lay with a pillow over their face. A gunshot burn visible in the pillowâs cover.
âBastard kills a kid,â Mike said in horror, âdoesnât even have the balls to look at him.â He picked up the pillow to get a better view and assess the scene, revealing a small boy.
Liv looked away, but to everyoneâs shock the child began to groan.
âHeâs alive! Call a bus!â the narc exclaimed.
Stabler shook his head, âItâll be faster if we take him in.â Mike nodded and scooped the child up and headed for the door.
*****
âIs he awake?â Liv asked after getting the all clear from the ER doctor that the child had survived. âWeâd like to see him.â
The doctor nodded, âRight this way.â
Liv and Mike walked into the room quietly as possible, âHey there,â she smiled at the little boy. âIâm Olivia, whatâs your name?â she spoke softly.
The small child kept his face turned away from the detectives, fidgeting with his fingers nervously.
The brunette looked at her fellow detective as he stepped up next to her, âMaybe he doesnât speak English? Why donât you go ahead.â
âHola.â Mike smiled, the boy hearing something familiar turned his head towards them. âComo te llamas?â The young child didnât answer but rather stared blankly. The detective saw the chain around his neck and picked it up gently to examine it. âAh, San Antonio. Es este tu santo?â to which the child nodded timidly. âHis name is Antonio after the saint.â Mike told Liv and then smiled kindly at him.
âAntonio mi llamo Miguel, soy policia.â Sandoval placed his hand on his chest and leaned down to the boy. Â
Antonio looked at him in a panic, âMi mama y papa?â
Mike kneeled down next to him, âBueno, AntonioâŠtu mama y papa.â
âPapa Dios se los llevo al cielo.â
Mike turned to look at Liv, âHe says God took them to heaven.â
Liv pursed her lips, âAsk him why?â she encouraged.
âPorque Papa Dios hiz eso?â the narc detective inquired.
âPara salvarles el dolar. Porque le hizo dano a mi mama y papa.â Antonio replied, still barely speaking above a whisper. Â
Mike translated for Olivia, âTo save them their pain, he was hurting them. Quien Antonio?â
âEl fantasma.â The boy answered.
Mike looked confused from the young boy to Liv, âHeâs saying a ghost shot himâŠI think heâs still out of it.â
Livâs beeper went off as he spoke, âOkay,â she sighs softly, âStabler needs us at the ballistics lab.â She smiled empathetically at Antonio as she headed for the door.
Mike rubbed his arm, âAdios Antonio.â
*****
Stabler and OâHalloran already had quiet to compilation of evidence to present when Liv and Mike walked through the door. Elliot didnât even wait for a greeting to start talking, âBallistics results from the Montoya homicides, take a look.â
Liv squinted at the screen as Ryan began explaining what she was looking at, âOn the left, the bullet taken from Mrs. Montoya. Three twists and a left groove. On the right, the slug taken from Mr. Montoya.â
The brunette looked at him slightly puzzled, âSame gun it would make sense that theyâre identical?â
âYeah,â OâHalloran murmured preoccupied, âNow look at this.â
âItâs a perfect match.â Mike chimed in, âSame triple twist, is that the bullet from Antonioâs bed?â
âNo.â Ryan answered sternly, his face contorted in concentration. âFrom an unsolved homicide.â
âWhat case?â Liv asked?
Ryan pressed a button on his keyboard to pull up the case file and the brunette womanâs blood ran cold. There she wasâ in the photo that was on her city issued ID, the one sitting buried in the bottom of a box in Livâs closet along her ADA badge, Alex Cabot. A face and a memory she tried hard to push down whenever someone brought her up, too painful to keep reliving. A twist of fate.
âThe Murder of Alexandra Cabot.â Elliot said out loud. Liv still lost in a trance.
âWhoâs that?â Mike asked as the beautiful woman did not seem familiar to him.
Liv stared at Alexâs picture for a few more seconds and finally opened her mouth to speak, âOur old ADA.â She couldnât seem to wipe the shocked expression off her face.
*****
Casey stood in the doorway to her office as the three detectives walked past, she wanted to try and grab Liv if only for a second, try and talk. She kept holding out that whatever had a death grip on Liv would soften and that they could fix things. She had also heard about Antonio and wanted to check on the child. âHey Liv,â she muttered quietly, âYou got a sec.â
Olivia didnât even stop to look at her, her face paler than Casey had ever seen it, âMaybe later Case, I canât right now.â And continued towards the bullpen.
Casey looked towards Elliot, âWhatâs wrong with her? She looks like sheâs seen a ghost?â
Elliot stopped and sighed, âSomething like that. The bullets from the Montoya homicides? They match an open case. Cabotâs case.â
The redheadâs face softened, âOh.â she said breathlessly. She didnât know the specifics of it all, but she knew they were close. She was also quite fond of Alex herself, they were a few years apart at Harvard and she started White Collar around the time Alex started as the ADA for sex crimes. Sheâd like to think what they had was akin to friendship.
âWeâll talk in a bit kid.â He nodded at her and squeezed her shoulder as he headed off towards the squad room.
Cragen was already adding Alex to the crime board, âAlexandra Cabot was prosecuting a rapist who worked for Cesar Valez the Norco baron. Valez ordered the hit on Cabot and blew up D.E.A. agent Tim Donovan, who was working the case with us.â He looked towards Stabler.
Elliot picked up from here, âBallistics match to the weapon used in the Cabot homicide is our link between Velez and the Brevet-Montoya murders.â
Liv felt like she was reliving the events of the Zapata case all over again. She wanted to vomit but instead cleared her throat to speak, âAnd we believe Elena and Jason Brevet embezzled a couple million dollars from Caser Velez. Sergio Montoya was working as their middleman. When Velez found out he was getting ripped off, he ordered the hit.â
Finn jumped in at this point, âAnd the hit man was good. He left zero forensic evidence at the Brevet and Montoya homicides.â He turned his eyes to Munch, giving him the signal it was his turn to contribute to this round robin rundown.
âOur best lead is the security footage from Brevet investments,â John stated, âWeâve excluded over two hundred employees, messengers and janitorial staff. We have about seventy-five subjects left to identify.â
âWe got a lot of names,â the captain sighed staring at the board. âAll the employees at Brevet Investments, everybody involved in the money laundering scheme. Somebody has got to connect back to the Cartel.â
The narc detective nodded as he soaked in all the information, âD.E.A. can help us out with that, their HIDTA computers are programmed to find links between cases.â
âGood.â Cragen retorted, âGet over to HIDTA. Run every name we got.â The captains eyes were somber as he looked over at two of his strongest detectives, he knew how close they were with Cabot. Hell, even he was warmhearted of the ADA. If they could finally get justice for her murder, he was going to make it happen.
âYes sir.â Â Â Â Â
*****
After a brief visit to HIDTA Liv, Elliot and Mike almost left empty handed until upon leaving Mike mentioned that the person they were chasing really was a ghost.
The technician turned around and said, âWhatâd you say?â
âOur kid witness,â Mike nodded, âsaid a ghost killed his parents.â
The HIDTA tech tilted his head, âDid he say it in Spanish? El Fantasma?
âWhy that mean something to you?â Liv asked as she pulled her jacket back on.
âEl Fantasma. The Ghost. Contract Killer. Liam Connors.â
*****
Liv and Mike went back to visit Antonio again to make sure he could identify The Ghost if he were to see him again. He could, at least he was pretty sure he could. Upon learning this they headed out to meet Elliot and see if they could locate El Fantasma.
âMunch just got something,â Liv said snapping her phone closed and walking towards Stabler and Sandoval. âRent-a-car parked in a loading zone outside Brevet Investments got a parking ticket late Friday night.â
âLiam Connors rented the car?â Elliot said as he turned around and headed towards the sedan.
âNo,â the brunette shook her head, âitâs a Bronx guy by the name of Doyle Shanahan. Fundraisers for the IRA in bars around New York.â She opened the passenger door while Stabler jumped behind the wheel and Sandoval swiftly slid into the back seat.
âWhere can we find him?â Mike inquired.
âWorks in a warehouse downtown.â Liv stated buckling her seatbelt hastily. Her partner pulled out into traffic as they took off on a Ghost hunt. Â The three detectives burst into the warehouse to confront Shanahan, pressing him until he finally gave up Connors. While resistant, the minute he heard Connors had turned to the cartel he had no problem ratting him out.
âFuel Depot. Over in Gowanus, on the canal.â
From there the race was on to capture Connors. The detectives sped to Jersey calling in backup along the way.
âGo! Go! Go! Go!â an ESU member yelled and slammed the door down with a battering ram.
As everyone rushed the building a man racing towards the stairs caught Livâs attention. âConnors!â she called out to alert the team. Elliot and Mike took after the suspect on foot chasing him down along the canal as Benson jumped in the sedan. âWeâre in pursuit of Liam Connors! Headed south along the canal! Headed south!â She hollered over the radio.
Liam managed to clock Stabler hard with a two by four knocking him off his feet and knocking the wind out of him before taking off. A miscalculated turn into a car lot got him jammed up as he was corned by Sandoval from one side and Olivia pulling up from the other in the sedan. Stabler catching his breath followed close behind and was able to with great satisfaction slap cuffs on Connors and place him under arrest.
*****
Connors was tossed into a line up where Antonio was able to identify him with ease. Afterwards Liam was taken to interrogation, he sat smug, convinced he was going home. Elliot smirked as he leaned down and let the Irishman know that they did have a witness and that he wasnât quite as good at his job as he thought.
The idea was to arraign Connors as soon as humanely possible to keep him from hurting anyone else. Mike and Liv went pick up Antonio the next day from his relativeâs on Staten Island to have him testify and get Liam on his way up to Rikerâs before he even knew what hit him. Liv didnât want to be bitter, but she was, she was reeling, knowing that Connorâs was the reason she lost Alex, but more presently the reason sheâd have to see Casey in court. Sheâd have to see the hurt in the redheadâs eyes and on her face and she just wasnât sure she could bare it.
****
âWhere the hell have you been?â Casey snapped as Liv and Elliot rushed into the courthouse.
âBeing shot at.â Liv said faintly yet vexed.
The redheadâs face immediately softened to an expression of distress. âWhat.â She managed to croak out?
âThere was a drive-by attempt on Antonio, one of the bullets nicked Sandoval and we ended up at Mercy.â Elliot sighed.
The ADAâs face dropped as she tried not to let her eyes well up with tears, she turned towards her ex-girlfriend, âOlivia Iâm sorry.â she said almost breathlessly.
âItâs fine Casey, you couldnât have known.â Liv shook her head, âWe better get inside.â
The prosecutor hurriedly pushed open the swinging doors to Trial Part 22 and ambled towards the prosecutorâs table.
Preston looked particularly perturbed as the ADA and detectives entered the courtroom. âYouâre late Ms. Novak, its 3:15.â
Casey dropped her briefcase onto the table and took a deep breath, trying to sound as professional as possible. âIâm sorry your honor I was in the Grand Jury. They just indicted the defendant on all counts.â
Kressler scoffed, âFifteen minutes too late.â
âThere was an attempt on the eyewitnessâ life. I think witness tampering is grounds for an extension.â The ADA rolled her eyes at the defense.
Kressler threw his hands up in protest, âMy clientâs been on Rikers. He didnât shoot anyone. And Iâm betting you donât have any proof of his involvement.â He wagged his finger condescendingly.
âSo its just a coincidence Antonio Montoya was shot at on his way to testify against the defendant?â Casey argued, her lip curled in mild annoyance.
The opposing counsel chuckled and shook his head, âYou can call it whatever you like. You still canât connect Mr. Connors to the shooting of your witness.â
âIâm sorry, Ms. Novak. I canât grant an extension without proof of the defendantâs complicity in the shooting. The people have failed to meet the deadline. Iâm ordering the defendant released until the trial.â Preston said apologetically as she banged her gavel. Â
Connors nodded happily with a smirk that only a guilty man could wear.
Casey slammed her hand down on the table, âYour honor Conners is a flight risk. If you let him go we will never get him back.â
âI give you my word my client will make all of his court appearances.â Â
âI would like something stronger than his word.â Casey retorted. Connors watched her with a clenched jaw as she demanded Preston hold him.
âIâm sorry. Youâre free to go Mr. Connors.â The judge said bluntly with a bang of the gavel.
The defendant stood up and shook Kresslerâs hand as Liv and Elliot hung their heads in disappointment. Elliot nodded and stood up. The ADA looked sternly at her friend, âArrest him.â She spat out. Connors looked over in shock. âYour honor, my detectives are here to re-arrest the defendant.â The redhead stated with confidence.
âOn what charges?â Kressler exclaimed incredulously.
Casey looked Preston dead in the face, âThe murder of Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cabot.â Stablerâs face dropped as he looked over at Olivia with panic.
âYour honor this is a blatant attempt to unlawfully detain my client!â Roger protested.
âSave it counselor, Alex Cabot was a friend of mine. Iâll see you both at arraignments.â Preston stood up and exited to her chambers.
The redhead nodded at Judge Preston then shot Kressler a look as if to let him know she had his ass in a sling.
Elliot snarled as him and Olivia stepped forward to cuff Connors. He scoffed at them, âYou canât prove I killed her, and the dead canât talk.â
*****
âWhat the hell are you people doing?â Agent Hammond demanded as he stormed into Cragenâs office.
Don turned around when he heard the familiar voice, âAgent Hammond, most people knock first.â he said slyly.
âYou shouldâve called me before your detectives arrested Liam Connors for the murder of Alex Cabot.â Hammond growled.
The captain stepped towards the marshal, his patience wore thin. âConnors blew up one of you agents! I didnât expect flowers, but I thought youâd be pleased.â
âConnorâs goes to trial,â he scoffed, âIâm called to testify. What am I supposed to do?â
âYour job.â
âThatâs exactly what Iâm gonna do. I just came to tell you that youâre on your own. Iâm not gonna ruin my career by committing perjury.â Hammond shook his head, eyes narrowed on Cragen. âDo we understand each other Captain?â
Cragen tilted his head, perplexed but then a sudden realization hit him, âSheâs alive. You son of a bitch, you stashed Alex in witness protection.â
Casey was on her way to Cragenâs office as he voiced this to the older agent. She stopped in her tracks and leaned up against the wall outside the door, her heart pounded, her head got dizzy. She felt like she was going to be sick or pass out, while it was never confirmed she felt like she lived in Alexâs shadowâboth at work and with Olivia. She stood there for a moment and continued to listen.
âYou didnât know.â Hammond said in shock, âThey didnât tell you.â
The ADA didnât even wait for Cragen to come out of his office and blow a gasket, she was going to blow it for him. She stormed down the hall as Elliot and Liv were coming back from getting lunch, âYou and you.â She jerked her head motioning at each of them, âMY office, now.â
Both detectives stopped in there tracks and looked at each other confused.
âNOW.â The redhead reiterated and urged them to follow her. âWhat the hell were you two thinking, you hung me out to dry out there. We work together, you shouldâve trusted me,â Casey closed the door to her office as she scolded Elliot. âAnd weââ she looked at Liv and started to choke up, âyou shouldâve told me.â she said quietly. âWhat did you think I was too green? Too fragile to understand? Did you think you needed to protect me from that too?â Her voice began to strain.
âHey câmon Case, letâs not do this?â Elliot tried to mediate.
Casey bit her lip and nodded before running her tongue over it to self soothe and walked to grab some files off her desk.
Liv hung her head, she knew the ADA was right.
âIâm going to need both of you back in here first thing tomorrow so we can figure out a way out of this mess youâve created and dragged me into.â
âCaseâIâmâ Liv started to reach out.
âSave it, just be here tomorrow. Iâll do my best to save all of our asses.â Casey shook her head in annoyance. She turned her body and brushed passed the brunette as she left her own office in search of Cragen.
*****
Cragen and Hammond pulled up in a small beater car to a quaint house on a quiet block. Wisconsin was soâsuburban. As the two men got out of the sedan and approached the door, Cragen went to knock, only for the door to swing open and a familiar face to greet him.
âWhat happened?â Alex Cabot asked, her blue eyes and face furrowed in concern. She ushered the men inside as Hammond did another quick sweep to make sure they werenât followed.
After giving his old friend a brief synopsis of what had transpired in court the day before, he looked at her and exhaled, âIâm only sorry the bastard wonât have to answer for what he did to you.â
âOh, he will.â The blonde stated without even skipping a beat. âI want him charged with my attempted murder.â Her eyes searched for a reaction from Hammond.
âYouâd have to go back to testify, thatâs stepping right into the crosshairs.â The marshal protested.
âFor years,â Alex cut him off, âI convinced victims to face their attackers. Now its time for me to step up.â She emphasized.
âYour testimony wonât help the case, you canât ID Connors as your shooter.â Cragen interjected with growing concern. âAlexâif you go back, they will try and kill you again.â
The stunning attorneyâs mouth hung agape a moment before she spoke, now in a softer, much less argumentative tone, âI have lostâmy home, my job, my friends.â Her voice crackedâ because what she wasnât saying was that she also lost her love. âMy mother died, and I couldnât go to the funeral. Liam Connors is not going to take my conscience too.â
*****
Elliot sighed, âAre we gonna need lawyers?â He paced back and forth nervously in Caseyâs office the next morning. He had no idea how to get them out of this, heâd stayed up all night racking his brain and couldnât come to a single conclusion. Â
âI hope not,â the redhead said picking up some case files from her desk. She smirked and looked towards the door as it opened.
Liv and Elliot turned around to find a familiar face smiling back at them.
âAlex.â Liv whispered. Caseyâs gut jolted, she knew that tone, but by G-d she wished she didnât.
Elliot smiled in surprise, âYou didnât have to come back.â He looked between her and the Marshal behind her.
âWell who else is gonna get you out of trouble,â the blonde grinned and folded her arms.
The redhead sighed, scooping up a mountain full of paperwork, âBefore everyone gets reacquainted theyâre waiting for us in court.â As she walked out Elliot studied her mannerisms, there was something different. He could tell as sad as she was about Olivia there was something that shifted in the young ADAâs body language when Alex entered the room. Elliot smirked softly to himself. Â

Later on that afternoon, after Liam Connorâs had been reindicted on attempted murder as opposed to murder one, Antonio and Detective Sandoval sat in Caseyâs office across from her and the officeâs former residentâAlex.
âIâm really scared,â Antonio said shakily, âI donât want to see The Ghost. He gives me bad dreams, he says heâs going to kill me.â
âHe had a nightmare last night,â Mike frowned. âThe Ghost had a gun in the courtroom.â
Both Alex and Casey cast an empathetic gaze on the small child. Casey pursed her lips and nodded at Antonio as the blonde listened intently. âWell, that sounds like a really scary dream.â The younger ADA said gently to the little boy.
Alex watched her intently, her mind wandering to how caring Casey was with the child. She must have fit it instantly with SVU, sheâs got a knack for this.
The redhead turned towards her and smiled sweetly, almost searching for approval as she spoke, caught off guard at the way Alex watched her. âBut, you know what Antonio? The ghost doesnât have a gun anymore. âCause the police took it away from him.â The older woman immediately tore her blue eyes away when they locked with Caseyâs and focused back on Antonio.
âI know,â the little boy said in a small, sad voice. âMike told meâbut I still donât want to go to court.â
Casey bit her lip nervously, there was no shot of this case going forward without Antonioâs testimony, but she had no idea how to convey that without unfairly voicing her frustrations to the young boy.
Alex took a deep breath, âI got shot, just like you.â
The younger ADA stared at the former counselor in awe, the way she had just been perceived by her a few moments before.
âBy the ghost?â Antonio crumpled his brow.
âYes.â The blonde nodded, âAnd I have to go to court too.â
âAre you scared?â
Alex smiled reassuringly, âA little. I get scared that he might try and hurt me again. But then I remember that I have friends to protect me, just like you do,â she nodded her head towards Sandoval, âand it makes me feel safe.â
âI wish my mom was here.â The boy looked down at floor, melancholic.
Mike frowned, âIâll keep working with him. Come on, âTonio.â He led the boy by the shoulder out of Caseyâs office.
Casey took a deep breath and raised her eyebrows at Alex in shared frustration as closed the door and turned around.
âWe should keep preparing my testimony.â The slightly older woman nodded, a far off look in her eyes.
The redhead should her head assuredly, âYou know, weâve gone over all my questions. I think youâre ready.â She knew Alex had to be exhausted and pushing too far could end up burning her out rather than helping.
Alex looked up as she snapped out of her daze and looked directly into Caseyâs hazel green eyes, âAre you?â She said, more pointedly than she intended.Â
The counselor let out a small breathy scoff, her eyes grew a little dimmer, as she tried not to let it show that she was hurt. After all, sheâd always looked up to Alex. Instead she opted to tilt her head and give the blue-eyed woman a knowing smile, as if to say I wonât let them hurt you.
The blondeâs face softened, she grimaced, âCasey Iâm sorry. That wasâŠout of line.â
âIt must be hard to be on that side of the desk.â Casey nodded for a few seconds and then voiced softly. She tilted her head empathetically at the blonde.
âYeah, especially when the gorgeous woman they hired to replace me is sitting on the other side of it.â She smiled, âand from what I hear sheâs just as good at the job if not better.â She took her glasses down from her face and looked at the redhead.
Casey was blushing, trying not show that she was flustered, and failing miserably at it. âIâthank you Alex, thatâs sweet.â
âI donât want to go back to the hotel yet, do you mind if we just pretend weâre still working?â Alex came and sat down next to her on the sofa leaning on her elbow, positioned against the back of the sofa.
âHey fine by me,â the redhead pulled out a bottle of scotch from next to the couch and placed it on the table with two glasses, âYou drink?â
âNo,â Alex shook her head, âPour me a double.â She smirked. âSo, do you like Special Victimâs? Last I heard you were in White Collar right?â she asked picking up the glass and taking a sip.
âItâs growing on me,â Casey chuckled, coddling the glass between her hands. âMy first case made me try to fight Branch on the placement.â She pulled her feet up onto the couch underneath her.  âBut thenâŠâ she trailed off.
âThen? Well donât leave me hanging.â The blonde teased.
âI met someone, and that helped make it easierâfor a while.â Caseyâs expression got sad, the emotion in her voice, raw.
âWhat happened?â Alex spoke softly, almost in a whisper, a note of concern in her tone.
âShe left me,â the redhead cleared her throat, âsuddenly too. No warning, I thought we were happy, but something spooked her. She said she was afraid she couldnât promise me a future. Something about a switch that might flip,â Caseyâs voice trailed off as she stared into nothing, âI never did quite figure out what she meant by that.â She finished the whiskey in her tumbler and poured another, offering another to Alex.
âWas it serious?â Alex was staring into the younger ADAâs green eyes, trying not to focus on the attractive womanâs lips as she spoke.
âI thought it was, I almost thought she mightâve been the one.â She took a sip and shrugged. âBut then I came home one day to her key on the counter and her toothbrush missing from the bathroom. I was so in love with her,â she paused, âbut I never found a way to tell her.â She swallowed off the rest of the glass and put it down on the table. âI should probably not drink anymore of that tonight.â
âFor what itâs worth Casey, whoever this woman is? Her loss. Youâre a beautiful woman, a talented litigator, and if I have to hear Elliot tell me how good at softball you are one more time Iâm going to beg them to stash me back in witsec.â She giggled, a little tipsy and put her glass down on the table next to Caseyâs. She leaned forward and brushed the redheadâs hair away from her face. âYouâll find someone who will treat you the way you deserve.â
Before Casey even realized what she was doing she leaned in and kissed Alex, who leaned into it kissing her back. It went from soft and delicate to heated in a matter of seconds. Alex pushed the younger woman back against the couch and wrapped her hand around the back of her neck, kissing her feverishly, pulling at her lip. Whiskey and sin between them. She knew there was a security detail outside of the door, so she tried her best not to breath too loudly. She slid her fingers down into Caseyâs slacks and started to tease her, rubbing her over her underwear as the redhead tried to stifle the sighs and gasps.
âAlex,â she whispered, âwe shouldnât.â Her heart and her brain told her this was a terrible idea, but her body had already made its decision. âOh, Alex.â She pulled the blondeâs lower lip, smirking as she dragged her teeth across. âMmm.â Her head was spinning.
The blue-eyed attorney melted at the way Casey said her name, a name she hadnât heard in so long. She was about to take the encounter further when there was a knock at the door.
âHey, itâs Liv Iâm just making sure everything is still okay in there.â
âWeâre fine,â Alex called out âjust finishing up some last-minute testimony questions.â
âOkay great, just let me know when youâre ready.â The brunette called through the door.
Caseyâs body language changed the minute she heard it was Liv at the door. She felt sick. A wave of guilt washed over her. They werenât together but her heart still belonged to Olivia.
âHey you okay?â Alex looked at her, concerned.
âYeah, yeah Iâm fine.â The ADA tried to play it off but almost immediately grabbed the trashcan and hurled into it. âOh god this is so embarrassing, Iâm so sorry Alex.â
âHey, hey, shhh another time.â She rubbed the redheadâs back, âare youâŠokay? You didnât really drink that much. You were fine untilâwas it something I did? Iâm sorry you kissed me, and I got carried away.â She blushed.
âNo, no Alex it wasnât anything you did, youâre wonderful.â She glanced at the door and then down at the trashcan. When she leaned over the small gold chain fell loose from her shirt.
Alex squinted and then it clicked, and the blondeâs face tempered. She sighed and looked at Casey sympathetically, âIt was Liv, wasnât it?â
The redhead looked up at her bleary eyed, head still over the trash, âIâdonât know where it went wrong. And Iâm so sorry, I just ruined the moment. I find you very attractive, I just heard her voice andâŠâ
âHey, itâs okay, another lifetime maybe.â She consoled and held her to her chest. âYouâre still in love with her arenât you?â
âItâd be so much easier if I wasnât.â the redhead sobbed.
âI get it, I was in love with her once too. Sheâs hard to get over.â Alex said, rubbing her hand up and down Caseyâs arm. âBut back then we were both deep in the closet and then I ended up in witness protection, so it all ended up a very depressing moot point.â
âI always figured there was something between you two, she wouldnât talk about it. Then again I thought you were dead, so I never pushed.â She gave a halfhearted laugh.
Casey stepped away for a minute into the ensuite bathroom to get herself cleaned up and brush her teeth, mouthwash, etc.
When she came out she found Alex leaning next to the door. âJust wanted to make sure you were okay.â
âI am really sorry for ruining the evening.â The redhead furrowed her brow and frowned.
Alex put her hands on her waist and pulled her close until their faces were almost touching. âIf you ever find yourself in another lifetime, I hope youâll think of me.â She laid a gentle kiss on Caseyâs lips and then pressed her forehead to the younger womanâs.
âCould be a while?â the redhead joked and gave a half-hearted smirk.
âSomething tells me itâs worth the wait.â
*****
âI wish these windows opened, I want to smell the city.â Alex whined as she looked out on to the financial district below.
Liv chuckled, âYou mean the, uh, rotting garbage and diesel exhaust.â
The blonde craned her neck and rolled it against her shoulders, it was hard to keep to her voice from breaking, âWisconsin is so quiet at night. Sometimes when I get homesick, I hum the Mister Softee song.â She pouted as a small smile crept across her face.
The brunette laughed through her nose and scrunched her mouth to the side. She leaned her back against the large glass window and looked at Alex. It had been a very long time since she had seen her at all let alone like that, her guard down, without the power suit armor she wore to courtâjust sweatpants and a soft top. Olivia stared at the strands of hair that fell and framed her ex-loverâs face, everything about it familiar. She started to tear up, both out of a sense of what they had once and out of shock that in that moment when it would be so easier to fall back into past patternsâall she could think about was Casey.
âWellâyou making any friends?â Liv asked quietly, her voice pained.
Alex grimaced and let out a sad chuckle. âThereâs a claims adjuster, at the insurance agency where I work. Weâve been seeing each other.â
Liv smiled, her levies in her eyes were about to breach. âGood.â She whispered.
âHeâs a good man, he thinks Iâm from Tulsa. And when weâre in bed at night he whispers my name⊠âEmilyââ her blue eyes turned down to the floor.
âItâs hard being someone youâre not,â Liv placed her hand on Alexâs arm.
The blonde turned her attention away from the window towards the brunette and let out a frustrated sigh, âOlivia, what are you doing?â
Liv pulled her hand away, âIâm sorry I wasnât trying anything.â
Alex chuckled, âThatâs not what I meant, I meant what are you doing?â The detective looked at her puzzled. âThat girl is crazy about you. You know that right?â
The brunette hung her head, her voice got quiet, âI know that.â She looked up into Alexâs familiar blue eyes, âHow is it you know that?â
âI havenât been gone so long that I donât know how to read people. The amount of pain in Caseyâs eyes when she heard your voice outside that door. Olivia you broke her heart. What I donât get, is why?â
âThings just donât work out sometimes.â Liv shook her head and looked down at the floor.
âThatâs a load of crap Olivia and you know it,â she put her hands on Livâs shoulders and leaned down in attempt to get her to look up at her, âHey, look at me. Why donât you just tell her the truth? Tell her why youâre so afraid.â Both her and the brunette had tears in their eyes. âYou know youâre not broken right? Olivia there isnât an evil bone in your body.â
The brunette had tears freely falling now, âYou donât know that. I want to believe that, but I canât stop thinking, what if we had kids? I know she wants them, weâve talked about it. What would I pass on? What if something snaps in me and I hurt her or our potential child? Itâs safer to break her heart now.â She wiped her tears away and shook her head.
âLiv, you are not your genetics, you and I have proved that in court time and time again. Donât miss a chance at happiness over this.â She hugged her and kissed her forehead holding her lips there for a few seconds, âOr because of anything else.â She whispered.
âIâll always love you Alex and I hope that you and I will always be a part of each otherâs lives,â her voice cracked as she spoke, âbut Casey, Iâm so in love with her and Iâm afraid itâs way too late. I really screwed up.â
âItâs not Liv, trust me.â She pulled her into a tight hug. âAnd Iâll always love you too and will always be your friend. No matter what.â They embraced for a while until Alex pulled back and looked at Liv caringly, âTell her.â
âThanks Alex. We need to get some sleep because tomorrow is a big day.â She kissed Alex softly, it wasnât a pass, it was just a thank you for being you. âIâll take the couch.â
The blonde stopped in the bedroom doorway and looked behind her, âBy the way not only can I read body language, but I also know your badge number, Benson. Sheâs still wearing it.âÂ
The next morning Alex was up before the sun, pacing around, trying not to break out in a sweat. Her nerves were definitely getting the better of her. In her furious pace she accidentally bumped the table which clanked her spoon in her coffee cup. Liv shot up on the couch gun in hand.
âSorry,â the blonde grimaced, âJust me. I wasnât watching where I was walking.â
The detective bolstered her weapon and rubbed her eyes, âYou okay?â
âNo,â Alex shook her head, âI canât stop thinking like a prosecutor.â She took a deep, ragged breath, âConnors is going to sit in that courtroom tomorrow, looking like a choir boy.â
Liv shook her head in agreement.
âHeâs going to charm the jury with his Irish brogue, andâand I have to make them see who he really is. Butââ She buried her face in her hands and then threw them up in exasperation and Liv walked over to her bag. âI donât even know what makes him tick!â
âAlexââ the brunette handed the blonde a DD-5, âyou didnât see this file.â
****
Casey tried to maintain her composure as she questioned Alex on the witness stand, trying not to think about the fact that twelve hours ago the blonde was sliding one of the delicate hands, now neatly folded in her lap, down the front of her slacks. âFinally, Ms. Cabot,â she locked on to blue eyes, placing her hand gently on the corner of the witness box, âwould you describe to the jury what happened after you were shot.â
Alex searched Casey, not able to maintain eye contact, her eyes traveled to her chest, what she would have given to listen to her heartbeat for just another minute. She tried to regain her composure, her eyes now searched the redheadâs full lips as she spoke. âI woke up in the hospital,â she started finally staring back into the ADAs hazel green eyes, âThe marshals were there. They told me that I was dead, officially, and that the only way they could keep me alive was in Witness Protection.â
âThank you,â Casey smiled, trying not to give in to Alexâs stare. âYour witness.â Her face dropped as she turned towards Kessler.
âThat sounds like quite an ordeal,â Roger said as he stood up, âI think weâre all very moved by your experience.â
âDo you have a question?â Alex annunciated and practically rolled her eyes at her old sparring partner.
âOnly one.â Kressler spat back, âDid you see my client shoot you?â
âI saw his gun aimed at my heart.â
âPlease Ms. Cabot, just answer the question.â She could hear Kressler tell her this, but her eyes were locked on Connors. His eyes deadpan, lifeless stared back.  âOn the night you were shot, did you see Liam Connors anywhere near the vicinity?â
âNo but heâs a coward. He likes to run away.â She smirked, she knew exactly what she was doing, it was like something reignited in her blood, a second nature. âDid you leave a family behind in Ireland, Mr. Connors?â The volume of her voice spiked.
âYour honorââ Roger voiced in displeasure.
âMs. Cabot, please.â Preston urged her to stop.
âYou have absolutely no idea who shot you, do you?â Kresslerâs tone started getting aggressive.
Casey furrowed her brow at AlexâWhat the hell is she doing, gunning for a mistrial? Donât blow this Cabot.
âOh, I have an idea. Itâs the kind of man who likes to rape a woman to make her talk.â The former prosecutor retorted, Liamâs face contorted in anger.
âLet me rephrase, did you see Liam Connors shoot you?â Roger stepped forward putting emphasis on each word as he spoke.
âNo but I know it was him.â Her teeth gritted.
               âObjection your honor!â
âIt takes a lot of balls to shoot an unarmed woman and a sleeping child! Too bad your aim wasnât a little better.â
Liam stood up, his rage bubbled over, âYou think youâre safe? They know where you are! You shouldâve stayed dead!â he shouted as four court officers wrestled him back into his chair. Â
âEnough!â Preston raised her voice, âWeâre in recess until Mr. Kressler can control his client. You may step down Ms. Cabot.â
Caseyâs eyes went back and forth between Connors and Alex, she smirked at Alexâs mad grab and how she couldnât believe it actually worked. Hammond jumped up to follow Alex out of the courtroom.
*****
Casey closed her eyes and held her breath as the verdict came back. A smile spread across her face as all counts came back guilty. Relief weighed heavy on Alex as she heard Liam Connors convicted on her attempted murder, something he had said earlier gave her the weary feeling that this wasnât over. Â
*****
Elliot wrapped his arm around Novak as they walked down the hallway with everyone on the way to celebrate the conviction in her office.
âGuilty on all counts.â She smiled quietly, she was proud of herself even if she knew the tipping point was actually the stunt Alex pulled.
Stabler could still the sadness in her eyes surrounding recent events, âI never doubted it would be anything else.â He smiled at her like an impressed older sibling, she smiled back, thankful for him as he steered her into her office.
âLetâs get this party started.â Liv smiled as she came through the other door holding two bottles of champagne and handed one to Mike.
âOoh, thatâs what Iâm talking about,â He smiled and brought the bottle over to the desk to crack it open.
Liv looked over at Elliot and Casey laughing and teasing each other. She missed the fiery redhead, the way she smelled after a shower, the way it felt to hold her against her chest after a long day, the way her kiss tasted.
âAlex knew just how to push Connorsâ buttons,â Cragan brought her back from her thoughts.
âSheâs a great prosecutor.â The brunette shrugged, nonchalant.
âAnd you gave her the ammunition.â He said softly.
She was taken aback by his comment and stayed silent as Mike handed her a glass of champagne.
âDonât let me drink too much,â Casey teased Elliot, âPenalty face starts first thing in the morning.â
âSlam dunk,â Stabler waved her off, âLive a little tonight.â He heard a noise from the hallway, âIs that her? Is that her?â He said in a hushed but excited tone.
Everyone held up there champagne to toast Cabot as she walked through the door, smiles on all of their faces. Casey tried to quickly make herself more presentable, maybe with all of this behind them, she could see if Alex wanted to try again, maybe this time without the crying and the throwing up into the trashcan. However, smiles quickly turned to confusion as the only person who came through the door was Agent Hammond.
âWhereâs Alex?â Liv asked, a sullen tone in her voice.
âMarshals are moving her and Antonio to new identities. She asked me to say goodbye.â His eyes moved from Liv unto Casey. The only person Alex had actually asked him to say goodbye to.
The redhead chewed her lip nervously as nodded, she understood the weight behind his look. As everyone turned to each other in shock he made another eye motion from Casey to her office couch. She furrowed her brow, this one she was unsure about. The nights festivities continued however bittersweetly.
âGoodnight,â the ADA sighed as Elliot hugged her and was the last one out the door. She closed it behind him and flopped back onto the couch only to jolt forward again. Her back had hit something hard, and it startled her, for a second she panicked that she may have become the new target of Connorsâ and the cartel. She reached back behind the pillow and put her hand on something smooth and glass. Upon pulling it out, she found it was a significantly sized bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Label with a note attached.
Casey crinkled her forehead and tilted her head in curiosity as she opened the note which read: âFor another lifetime. -Aâ
She couldnât help but smirk, âMaybe so, Cabot. Maybe so.â She smiled to herself and held the note to her chest when the door swung open. The redhead sat up startled to find a distressed Olivia âReally Poor Timingâ Benson standing in her doorway, one hand palming the doorframe, the other hand palming the handle.

*****
Alex put her hands on her waist and pulled her close until their faces were almost touching. âIf you ever find yourself in another lifetime, I hope youâll think of me.â She laid a gentle kiss on Caseyâs lips and then pressed her forehead to the younger womanâs.
âCould be a while?â the redhead joked and gave a half-hearted smirk.
âSomething tells me itâs worth the wait.â

âI wish these windows opened, I want to smell the city.â Alex whined as she looked out on to the financial district below.

Hi! This isn't really a question but I do hope you're doing fine.
Hi Anonymous! This is very sweet thank you for the concern. It took a little while, but I am doing much better! I was trying to juggle 50 hour work weeks, pass Calculus/Linear Algebra, as well as move myself out of an emotionally/verbally abusive situation that was putting a strain on my mental and financial health over the last decade đ„ș However life is looking nothing but up from here on out and I can't wait to share more writing with you all and be more mindful in the present <3
Much love,
PKJ
