Beyond Seventeen
Somewhere beyond the hill of our grave
I see us
Beyond youth
Beyond being seventeen.
Have our hazy figures been tainted by the unrest of time
Any more than we already have been
Walking through the hallways on our last day of school?
Have we found peace in that field of steady soil
From beyond my worm-infested hole
In which the sunset crests and proceeds on early mornings
To pay tribute to the shadows behind us
Who are still only seventeen.
I am walking backwards to search beyond the paths ahead
and I hope that you'll join me.
