If your condition stops you from doing something, then it is a disability.Â
If your condition makes it difficult for you to complete a task, then it is a disability.
Dont let others tell you you âarent disabled enoughâ and invalidate your experience.Â

Canât quite express how hard it is to constantly have people patronise you, and doubt you, over your disability. Never ceases to amaze me how able-bodied / neurotypicals find a way to belittle - to constantly put you down, and then act shocked when you stand up for yourself and explain (yet again), that there are limits to what you can do. Itâs not âbeing lazyâ to say âI cannot do thatâ. It is accepting reality.Â
Not every boundary in life is there to be pushed, and honestly, people need to stop this whole âthe sky is the limitâ bullshit. It is deeply ableist, and damaging, because they think, then, that it is acceptable to essentially harass disabled folks and tell them âyou need to be doing more!â, âwhy arenât you doing this, this and this!â, âit is just your attitude that holds you back!â.Â
Beyond fed up with ableism. Beyond tired of trying to explain to people who refuse to listen, and who make life harder than it already is.Â
whatâs the mood for july?

Even better, the comments to this Twitter post were an absolute FIRESTORM of mostly dudes explaining to her that dials canât only have 2 positions (not true) and that it wasnât a very good piece (not true) that she was being disrespectful to her teacher (donât care) and that it was a sign of her stupidity/rabid feminism/intellectual laziness/misandry/etc. that she couldnât see any âmiddle ground.â It became, in its way, a performance piece. I was absolutely mesmerised, even as I wished I could cock-punch people through the internet.

Iâm all for fighting for marriage equality in the LGBT community. But weâre so focused on that no one knows about this problem.
WâŚwait Thats a thing????
Yep! The man I refer to as my husband? We arenât actually married. We canât be.
If I married him, the government would literally expect me to care for him and be his sole source of income. He would lose all of his benefits, including SSDI. Spouses are expected to share income and that effects ALL of his benefits, even his health insurance. We simply canât afford to be married.
But it goes even further than that. If I were disabled, our incomes would STILL be combined, meaning BOTH of us would have our benefits cut.
For people reviving supplemental income, their benefits can be cut anywhere from 25% of their current income all the way down to 0%
In fact, one of the stipulations of receiving income under the adult disabled child program (which provides benefits for people who were disabled before age 22) is that they LITERALLY never be married.
I normally donât link to blog posts as resources, but since social service resource sites like to dress this problem up and make it seem smaller than it really is, Iâm gonna call it appropriate! Check it out!
