Muslim students and allies at UNC are declaring enough is enough. We do not feel safe. Numerous events on UNC’s campus have created hostile working, living, and learning environments. Issues that have contributed to the hostile environment at UNC include: the persistent sexual assault crisis, the struggle to officially rename Saunders Hall, the closure of the Poverty Center by the Board of Governors, the recent #ChapelHillShootings, and now the defamatory and egregious Anti-Arab and Anti-Muslim sentiments articulated by David Horowitz, who was brought to campus by student organizations. Furthermore, members of these student organizations have joined in on Horowitz’s baseless claims to delegitimize and vilify Muslim and Arab students. We recognize that these attacks are not confined to the Muslim and/or Arab community, but rather extend to other marginalized groups on campus and throughout the country. To this end, we invite UNC students to share their experiences of not feeling safe on UNC’s campus using the hashtag #NotSafeUNC.
