I keep seeing people complaining about check please as queer media written by a straight woman. Did I miss something? Did ngozi announce her sexuality somewhere? Because I’ve never seen her say a word about it, or mention a partner of any gender.

Or are these people just assuming that because what she wrote doesn’t match their experience/isn’t what they would write/isn’t how they would react to a situation, she has to be straight? Despite other queer people being a-ok with her choices?

I’ve seen people also imply she has no experience with anxiety or knows nothing about it. When she was writing the strip where Jack has a panic attack, she said in the livestream chat that she was worried about exactly that - that people would get mad that she hadn’t portrayed anxiety the way they experience it. But, she said, she’s portraying it the way she experiences it, and she’s well-aware that it’s only one way things can go down, but she can’t represent all experiences at once.

There are lots of legit reasons to criticize the comic or year 3 or a particular episode. “I’d like it better if it matched my experiences” is even one of those! But can we cool it with pretending like your experience is the only valid one and assuming that if that’s not what something looks like, the author couldn’t possibly have any experience with that issue? Because trust me, if she made it look like your experience, other people would be pissed that it didn’t match theirs. Because get this… everyone’s experiences are different.
