It's been over a month since we installed HRI (Unpaid Internship) at the 2014 DUMBO Arts Festival, but we thought we'd share some picks from the documentation. It was a feat of strength to accomplish, but went off successfully with around 75 "internships" filled! You can find a bit more info about the project on our website:

The vernacular of the office is a constant and unavoidable presence in many of our lives, a sub-culture that spans disciplines, boundaries and societies. HRI (Unpaid Internship) takes that language and distills it into a microcosm — an immersive performance and installation that reconfigures the workplace as a musical instrument.

Robert Propst’s Action Office would be perverted over the years into the most notorious symbol of the American office world: the cubicle. Even the crazy dot-com offices would be remembered not for their architectural utopianism but for the crazy hours their denizens worked: “white-collar sweatshops,” many began to call them. Meanwhile , the burgeoning café life of the freelancer is a reality for many, but it comes with persistent financial insecurity, no benefits, and a relatively asocial work environment. In short, the story of white-collar work hinges on promises of freedom and uplift that have routinely been betrayed.

Join us for a performance on Friday, April 4 at the NYC Code Poetry Performance Festival. Jonathan & Andy will be performing a new work called Regular Expressions alongside Ishac Bertran, Zach Lieberman, Jonathan Dahan, Josh Galeota-Sprung, Todd Anderson with Thomas Fucaloro, with host Kat George.

Regular Expressions is a duet that uses a custom instrument to turn written poems into signals & sounds. A series of coded search patterns (regular expressions) are established and used to evaluate input in realtime, sending along information about the contents of the matched text. In the same way that traditional poetry takes advantage of spoken rhyme & meter, Regular Expressions utilizes the patterns of information hidden within written language.

Inspired by the hubbub going around about a soon-to-be-released app that will allow us all to read Ulysses in a single sitting, I decided to experiment with the technique myself.

This is a simple bookmarklet that converts paragraphs of text to a single-word display. It works best in conjuction with the wonderful “Readability” bookmarklet.
