Forte nodded, quietly agreeing with the sentiment.Â
She blinked a few times, her mouth hanging open a bit. Forte hadnât expected such a turn in the conversation, and she had only just recently found out what prom even was. She shook her head gently, leaning in closer. âNo. Do you?â She asked, her voice low in order to match the otherâs.
Good to know that she wasn't the only one without a date. The newfound knowledge gave her guilty relief. The blonde girl was very pretty, but then again, she supposed that most boys would probably be too intimidated to ask a girl who could probably lift more than they could. "No," she replied, lips shaping into a grin after the short statement. "I don't really mind. If I did, well, I guess I could just ask someone." Lie. She would probably pass out before the first word escaped her lips. "But I don't really have anyone in mind, you know?"

Though he wanted to comment further upon the subject having to do with the reason as to why he approached her, Hiro couldnât help but get a bit sidetracked. That nameâŚThat honorific. No one had used it with his name, aside from some teasing in his Japanese class. Granted, Minori called him âsenpaiâ, butâŚstill. It was new. Fresh.
âŚHe actually quite enjoyed the name. It made his cheeks turn a slight pink due to slight surprise and eagerness. âI do not mind being called Hamasaki-kun, actually. That isâŚif you are alright with me calling you Kirkland-chan.â Near the end of his sentence, he seemed to have adopted a cheerful, almost playful tone, shaking her hand at the same time.Â
"AhâŚanyhow," he said, starting to get back on topic. "Yes, it seems as though you have caught my eye indeed. I was simply unsure of the dress code applied to theâŚerm, e-event, soâŚI thought that, perhaps, we would be able to find out. T-to solve both of our troubles."Â
A soft laugh bubbled out of her lips. Kirkland-chan sounded strangeâof course, it was an English surname paired with a Japanese honorificâbut she didn't mind. It was nice at the same time. She couldn't help but view the matching names as a sign of their friendship. "Of course it's fine. I like it. It sounds kind of cute, actually." She finally dropped his hand. "Nice to meet you, then, Hamasaki-kun," she said, forgetting that she had already said something similar.
She was tempted to raise her brow at the way he said event instead of prom, the slight stutter that accompanied the first letter. But she let it slide. "Yeah. All I know is that the theme's Arabian Nights." She shrugged. "I want to know if I can wear something like Princess Jasmine's outfit, since dresses make me feel a bit... weird. But I suppose there is a reason why girls shop for prom dresses rather than prom outfits."
"How about you? What are you confused about?" she asked, tilting her head in accompaniment. "Maybe I can help." She paused for a moment, wondering if she was asking too many questions already. But she was too curious to restrain herself. "Do you have a date?" Perhaps that was the reason behind the nervousness that she sensed. She knew that if she had a date, she would want to look decent for them, too. And she would be trembling the day before the dance. And probably faint, for good measure.
Looking over to the tense girl, Gill folded his arms over his chest, a look of perplexment on his face. Why did she seem so nervous? Had someone been spreading rumors about him? But he ignored it as mere shyness answering her question, âYes, I take AP Current World History, but if you donât mind me asking - Did someone in particular advise you about asking me or did you see the tutoring flyers that the Academics club posted around the school?â
A hand instinctively went to cover his mouth as he nodded listening to her request. âThese things happen, luckily thereâs still time in the semester to make it up. Donât beat yourself up for it.â Hearing her compliment he felt his ears get red and looked away again, unsure how to accept her kind words. âAh, well Itâs nice to know you think soâŚâ The blonde coughed and regained composure with an even more serious look on his face, âSo, what area in particular are you struggling with the most?â
"I wasn't told about you in particular. But I've heard about you." Delicately lifting her shoulders in an almost imperceptible shrug, the brunette continued, "And I saw the flyers as well." How could she not? She made it a point to skim every campus bulletin board that she passed. "It was kind of a... thoughtless decision, you could say. I was just going by the library on the way to my dorm when I remembered that you were probably inside and I just went with it before I could change my mind."
Relief expressed itself in a bright smile. For a moment there, she'd been afraid that he would call her stupid. It was good to know that he wasn't that type of person. "To be honest, I just find the whole thing boring. Except the stuff related to agriculture." And sometimes, law, even though she got enough of that at home.
Unlike the young woman, Hiro was not able to fully process the identity or level of familiarity that she had been able to get across. He had noticed that she was in his classâsoccer, yes? Even so, he had not been able to recall her name. He felt a bit embarrassed about it, even though he was not sure that she knew his name.
His mind, however, switched back to the conversation. At her expression, Hiro relaxed a bit, but also became a bit apprehensive for some reason. The event made him nervous for a cause he did not know.
"I-Iâm not sure that interested is the word for itâŚah, well, perhaps just a bit," he said, putting a hand over his shoulder. "Oh, where are my manners? Before I continueâŚI am Hamasaki, Hiro." He bowed. "It is an honor to meet you, MissâŚ?"
âAh. Well, you did approach me in the middle of the hallway. That means that what I was muttering caught your attention, yes?â A raised eyebrow. âIâm kind of curious.â
Hiro Hamasaki? That was a Japanese surname, and the following gesture was one usually applied by people from Japan, was it not? âNice to meet you, Hamasaki-kun...right?â Japanese 1 and 2 had taught her that this was how Japanese people referred to each other. But since they werenât in Japan, maybe the same rules did not apply? âOr should I just call you Hiro?â She didnât mind either way.
It took her a few moments to realize that he was waiting for her introduction. "R-Right," she mumbled, embarrassed at how she had just spaced out. "My name is Angela. Angela Kirkland." Her fingers twitched, and she wondered if it was still proper to extend her hand for a handshake. He had bowed already, hadn't he? But she did so anyway.
Forte shrugged, putting a hand on the side of her neck. She was never one for bragging about her own abilities, and she wasnât normally all that great at taking compliments either.Â
She nodded a few times. âYeah. I guess itâs supposed to be relaxing, but I find the best way to start the morning is by getting the blood pumping.â Forte paused for a moment before gently waving her hands in front of her. âBut you should do whatever you want to!â
"I can't see how contorting your own body into Goddess-knows-what shapes is supposed to be relaxing." The only thing that the image brought to mind was body pain. "But you're right. I suppose people do find it enjoyable." A shrug. "So each to his own, right?"
She leaned closer, voice dropped in what could almost be taken as a conspiratorial whisper. "Do you have a date for prom?" she asked curiously. The brunette herself hadn't been asked. Both a relief and a disappointment. If she were asked, she'd probably take such a long time to answer due to a sudden bout of stuttering that the offer would be withdrawn. Still, it would have been nice.

"I donât listen to rumors, I only heard there was a new student, which is a fact, but sure I can help you," he said in as friendly of a tone he could muster, "Just let me finish shelving these books." When he was finished he returned to where she was seated quietly, leaning against a desk adjacent.
"Technically Gilligan is my name but no oneâs ever called me that, not even my parents. It is annoying, but well thereâs nothing much I can do." He shrugged looking off to the clock in the distance, "Alright so what it is you needed help on? Do you have a project for one of your classes and need sources?"
Tension seeped out of her muscles, relief swooping in to take its place. Thankfully, he didn't seem like he thought she was a disturbance of some kind. Lacing her fingers together, she began to explain her predicament. "Not to sound like a stalker or anythingâ" What. Oh Goddess. Did she seriously just start her plea with that? It was off to a bad start already. Abort mission abort mission abort missionâ "but you take the AP class for Current World History, right?"
Previous confidence utterly gone with the wind, she continued, "And, uh, I almost failed it and my mom got really mad and, uh, she demanded that I get a tutor..." She was staring at the table now, avoiding his blue gaze in case he decided to look away from the clock and at her instead. "Like, hell, it's just Common Core but I don't get it, you know?" Take a deep breath, now. "And, uh, you're really smart and I couldn't think of anyone else, so, uh..." You're doing a great job, Angela. Of making a fool of yourself.
She smiled slightly, feeling a little reassured by the girlâs words.Â
"Oh, I take weight lifting. The yoga class is in the same building though, so Iâve seen some of what they do in there." For a moment, a blank stare overcomes her facial features before she snaps out of it and looks at the other girl. "They just⌠stretch the entire time." Not that she had an issue with stretching, but she felt there was only so much stretching one needed to do.
"Weight lifting, eh? Wow, you must be pretty capable then." It seemed even less suited for her than yoga was, but she supposed it would be useful for her farming career. But that was it. She wasn't going to be jumping on the weight lifting bandwagon anytime soon. "I've passed the yoga room a few times while they're having the class." Sometimes the doors were blocked by the many boys who were infatuated with the beautiful yoga instructor, Ms. Selena. But most instances, the way was clear. "I know. I mean, no offense, but I don't really see what's so appealing about that..." Her mind wandered to the yoga Youtube videos she had watched once. She wondered if Ms. Selena could contort her body like that.
"Well you know how people are about new students, stories and buzz everywhere," he said a hint of disapproval in his tone. Picking up the pile of books and placing them on a cart he walked over to the stacks expecting her to follow.
"What book do you need?" Gill said examining the spines making sure he was putting them in the appropriate locations. Hearing the hostility in her tone, Gill looked up at her apologizing, "I heard someone in the halls say that in reference to you, I wonât call you that if you donât like it. Itâs funny because I have the opposite problem; though I specifically tell them to call me Gill two annoying students in particular continue to call me GilliganâŚ"
Her ears caught the disapproval that laced the words. He was indeed a no-nonsense type of person. She wasn't like him, but she understood his disapproval. New students weren't a big deal. Though, admittedly, it was exciting to meet new people for the first time. "I hope there haven't been any bad rumors," she remarked lightly, before finally taking a seat.
Hesitantly, "Um, yeah... I was hoping I could ask for your help on that one." Oh dear. She could feel her ears burning a firetruck red already. "If you're not too busy?"
"Thank you." There wasn't anything dramatic associated with the nickname. Really; they weren't in a teen movie where her ex-boyfriend who had broken her heart oh-so-badly used to call her that, which led to her being touchy about it. Nothing like that. Dislike just accompanied the name, that's all. "Gilligan is your real name, huh?" The name brought Gilligan's Island to mind. "That must be really annoying."

Forte felt a little ashamed suddenly, she hadnât meant to eavesdrop on the girl. âOh, sorryâŚâ She tilted her head to the side. âIsnât that the morning class? Zero period, I mean.â She asked, correcting herself a bit as she spoke.
Eyebrows raised at the penitent words. Confusion laced her tone now, but she was still jovial about having someone to discuss this with. "You did nothing wrong." She held her hands together, nodding as she replied, "Yeah. What do you have for zero period?"
Hiro had been doing as he usually didâwalking peacefully in the halls. He was actually headed towards his dorm room, remembering that he had to pick up his notebook for his poetry class and his composition book for his Japanese 2 class. He planned to study outside for an hour or so. Fresh air was always good for the body.
On his way, however, he had found a young woman. A stranger talking about something that he could not resist thinking about himself. Perhaps she was talking aboutâŚthat event. Curious, Hiro quietly walked over to her and tapped her shoulder. His voice was clear and his tone was humble and polite as he said, âExcuse me, Miss. I couldnât help but overhear your recent statement. Are you, perhapsâŚspeaking of the attire meant for the prom event?â
Angela was quite surprised when someone tapped her shoulder. Her heart rate spiked, but her gasp was nearly inaudible and she managed to school her features into a more graceful expression before turning around. Brown eyes scanned the strangerâfirst because of force of habit, second because of genuine interest. People tended to stay out of her way whenever she was muttering angrily to herself in the corridors.
A senior, she finally recognized. Was in the Nurse's Office a couple of times when I passed by. Takes soccer with me. And most importantly, she had seen him during cooking club meetings. But she couldn't recall any sort of interaction between them aside from the stuff that involved kicking black and white balls. Maybe she'd asked him to pass the soy sauce once or something, but whatever. Who remembered things like that? "Yeah," she replied, lips forming a smile. "You seem interested." Could it be that he was feeling a little uneasy about it? Even if not, he seemed the type nice enough to listen to her rant about it without complaining, so she was considerably at ease.
