relistening to taz balance is just. there's a ghost in your house. there's a ghost following you and you don't know it's following you but you feel their absence all the same. there's a ghost locked in your house but they shine through the cracks in the walls anyways

she could have just been the journal keeper she could have had a simple straightforward title or role like the other birds but no sheâs lonely too. itâs so important that she is lonely. sheâs been lonely forever. and Iâm fine itâs fine iâm feeling so fucking normal about it
people like to make taako and lup have sun and moon motifs but they come from a planet with two suns and no moon. twins suns. someone do something with this im so sleep deprived
relistening to Taz and I'm really enjoying listening to each arc and relating it to the relevant bird.
like yeah here there be gerblins is about lup it's about you should have thought about that before throwing my dog in the fire, it's about falling in love with Barry Bluejeans, it's about trying to save so many people but failing, it's desperate odds and flying away from a disaster you couldn't avert, it's about being bitten in the back by an earlier decision to trust someone.
murder on the Rockport Limited is about Dav. It's about seeing the truth behind the illusion. it's about a town of people all with the same face. it's about losing the driver and trying to save the vehicle without him. it's about the youngest member of the crew holding a book that catches the truth and stops it reaching its destination. it's about beheading and loss of identity. It's about remembering to get your roommate pringles
petals to the metal is about Merle. It's about don't be chopping on these sweet sweet babies. it's about reaching out to someone you love who has been consumed by a power they can't fully control. it's about dying in the hope they can be saved. it's about racing as fast as you can, with all that you have, in the hope that something can be saved in the end.
crystal kingdom is about taako. it's about loving someone you've lost so much you'd turn the world to crystal to try and save them. it's about Kravitz. its about learning more from thousands of realities to make new and wonderful things. its about walking through your legacy. its about the best sandwich and taako's good out here. its about seven birds being seen, its about the thousands of lives that Boyland touched
the eleventh hour is about Magnus. It's about rustic hospitality. it's about recklessly breaking reality trying to protect people you love. it's about fate and choices you make in life. it is being a small town hero. it is making promises and keeping them. it's about the downfall of a corrupt leader and the people he took down on his way. it's about fallen temples and burnt out buildings. it's about embracing the inevitable and holding the hand of the clock that strikes your doom as the weapon that will save you
the suffering game is about Barry. It's about looping through endless pain again and again in the hopes of reaching a dream. it's about liches and death and love. it's about losing your body and being saved from permanent death by the power of your friends' love. it's about working out how things are working and then pulling them apart to understand them. it's about choosing to lose everything in the hopes that it might let you save something. arms outstretched. trust Barry, love Barry
the stolen century is about Lucretia. it's one hundred years of journals. It's learning world after world and watching them die. It's working to protect those you love by saving the light. It's about running away again and again, and loving only in goodbyes. it's about being alone and dying again and again. It's about bonds growing stronger even as something comes relentlessly to consume them
story and song is about the starblaster flying into, not away from the storm. it's about hear that babe, we're legends. it's about bringing together all the arcs and all the relics into one hope to undo mistakes. it's about the magic in a bardsong. it's about the light of creation being used as a barrier against darkness.
i will never ever ever ever ever ever get over the gang's first interactions with lucretia in the first lunar interlude. griffin is playing the Regal and Very Serious and Deadpan Madame Director, and they're all meeting her for the first time. they have absolutely 0 rapport with each other, but she plays along with their jokes, and even makes jokes of her own. other NPCs are actively annoyed by their goofs, but not the Director. shes Regal and Serious and Sarcastic and Familiar.
and griffin probably wasn't planning this far ahead at that point, but knowing what comes next. knowing how it ends... it all just lends itself so perfectly to the fact that these interactions are Lucretia Reuniting With Her Friends. realistically she's a stranger to them, but they get along so well and so immediately, that on re-listens it really does make you think "they are her best friends, there's nothing else it could be. they are long lost friends."

[Image ID: A comic with two panels, one with Taako Taaco from TAZ and the second with him alongside Magnus Burnsides and merle Highchurch.
Taako is a slim elf with medium-brown skin, wavy dark brown hair with orange tips, and an antelope-like tail. Heâs wearing a white t-shirt and blue plaid pants as well as a little blue party hat.
Magnus is a tall, fat and muscular human man somewhere in his twenties. Like Taako, he as medium-brown skin but has lighter, reddish brown hair. He has somewhat fresh top surgery scars and a black eye. Heâs wearing red plaid pants.
Merle is a fat, middle aged dwarven man with medium-dark brown skin, wavy gray hair with an equally wavy beard and otterlike features (sharp teeth, whiskers and a long furred tail). He is depicted as a trans man with breasts. He is wearing a teal tank top and lemon-green pants.
In the first panel, Taako stands holding two champagne glasses. He smiles and looks down as he says âHappy new cy-â
In the second panel, he is rudely interrupted by Magnus and Merle, the former holding a little flag and a noisemaker and the latter with a sparkler. Merle winks as he shouts, very colorfully, âHAPPY NEW CYCLE, SLUTS!â
gosh the first TTAZZ in which Griffin hammers that Barry Bluejeans is dead is such a treat. Like the question was âwill he ever come backâ and he completely circumvents it by saying âheâs dead. His soul has left his body.â Fucking evil mastermind
every time i relisten to the eleventh hour, i'm just like. oh. right. griffin put a pair of sibling NPCs, of which one is a technically-still-alive skeleton in a cave, into this one. yeah, sure. and for some reason taako is ridiculously adamant that this skeleton isn't alive or sentient despite all evidence to the contrary. like. sure. okay. it's a funny scene. it's a genuinely funny scene. it's one of the best dumb jokes in the arc. someone's dead sibling is just casually hanging out as an undead skeleton in a cave. i feel normal.
the problem with taz balance is you first listen to it as a naive high schooler like "oh, funny dnd popdcast made by those mcelroy guys i see in tumblr memes all the time! and they apparently have gay characters too! let me check this out! haha his name is taco that's so random XD" and nobody could have warned you that a decade later you'll still periodically think about lucretia and her martyr complex and be stricken with the urge to start gnawing your own limbs off
youre really gonna have to bear with me on this one. but if the adventure zone balance was like a serialized tv show that ran for like 11 seasons and so had plenty of time to fuck around and do weird side plots and one off character study episodes i think there would be b plot to some episode or another where kravitz gets assigned to reap a ghost orchestra thats causing phantom of the opera style chaos at an old theater but realizes theyre only haunting the place because they want to play music again but dont have a conductor so he conducts a final performance for them and they are at peace having resolved their unfinished business and he gets to finally be a conductor . i just think that would be cool .

i will say this until iâm blue in the face but i love the reoccurring motifs in taz balance like. shut the fuck up what do you mean crystal kingdom happened bc a son loved his mom. what do you mean the eleventh hour happened bc a dad loved his daughter. because a mom wanted to be with her babies again. what do you mean that so much of everything was built upon the voidfish wanting to be with its child.
âhere there be gerblinsâ is like what if you couldnât save everyone. âpetals to the metalâ is like what if the love was there and it couldnât save everyone but the love was still there. âcrystal kingdomâ is like what if the love was there and it couldnât save everyone and it actually made things worse but the love was there. âthe eleventh hourâ is like what if love started all of this but you couldnât save everyone (you couldnât save everyone (you couldnât save everyone (you couldnât save everyone (you couldnât save everyone (you could save everyone))))). âstolen centuryâ is like what if you could try again (what if there was love) (what if you could try again).
taakitz is actually extremely funny in the context that both taako and kravitz seemingly gravitated towards each other because they were longing for an anchor, something stable and simple as a break from their chaotic and incredibly high stakes jobs that had taken over their lives, and for this they both chose the weirdest most insane goddamn person theyd ever met. and it worked
the difference i think is that kravitz knows taako is an insane weirdo and is both concerned and intrigued by whatever hes got going on. whereas taako is taako and also grew up with lup so he thinks kravitz is pretty much normal. hes just got a weird job. dont we all.
lups the fucking funniest character bc shes a sort of moral core to the starblaster crew, a huge part of the drive they have to save the worlds they come across and defeat the hunger, incredibly compassionate and emotionally intelligent, and also just fucking LOVES blowing shit up. cannot get enough of it. will see an opportunity to commit nonlethal arson and say "is anyone gonna fuck that up" and not wait for an answer. genuine honest to god pyromaniac. sees a machine gun and her immediate reaction is to start shooting it in the air. her favorite gift shes ever gotten is the opportunity to run around an abandoned building blowing things up with fire magic. its not even really treated as a character flaw its just a fun hobby she has
the twins: cat-coded. standoffish until you earn their trust but from then on they'll never leave you alone
merle: also cat-coded. old, scruffy, down an eye, and dangerous to let near your plants is a thing that many animals can be, but cats are truly the poster child

*"understanding" meaning they know they disagree but also understand the other can't be stopped/thinks they're doing the right thing, whether that manifests as avoiding the topic altogether when they meet, or just weary acceptance and frank conversation; and "antagonistic" meaning at least one of them is actively trying to interfere/stop the other/convince the other to stop, in the interaction itself
i see a lot of different interpretations of barry & lucretia's relationship after the voidfish and i've gone back and forth over what i think so i wanted to see what the general consensus is
my thoughts under the cut
i can't imagine barry realizes what's happened and doesn't try to 'reason with' lucretia for a little while, before eventually somewhat accepting that she won't listen to him, because after a certain amount of time, it just gets exhausting to hope he can still sway her. like i don't think he gives up, he still tries sometimes, because he has to, that's his whole life at this point, hoping and trying and not giving up in the face of isolation and despair and impossible odds, but he knows he has to pick his battles. and sometimes they catch each other on bad days and heâs just really fucking glad to see her and really fucking disappointed in her and really fucking tired, unable to muster the conviction or energy to fight with her.
and lucretia doesn't do much trying to convince barry, because she knows she couldn't get him on board with her shield beforehand, and he definitely doesn't approve of what she did to taako and himself, not to mention davenport (if he even knows about davenport, cause thatâs gotta be really distressing for him, right? do you think barry ever tries to kidnap davenport).
i think after that initial period, and certainly after the BOB is created, they're both afraid of what the other is up to, afraid the other will disrupt their own plans, and try to avoid the other detecting them altogether. but, they're also both incredibly lonely and know the other is the only person in the world who understands what's at stake and the burdens they're both carrying, so even though they don't seek each other out often, they both want to, and maybe sometimes do. a conversation after lucretia gets out of wonderland is especially compelling.
i don't think they interact between here there be gerblins and reunion tour, though, mostly because i think lucretia just doesn't really leave the moonbase now that the bureau has some wins and is getting closer to its goal, and as soon as she knows barry's messing with the boys, she's too paranoid at whatever barry's plans are that are completely unknown to her and wants to avoid him in case he's come up with a way to really stop her. and barry is equally paranoid about her discovering his information gathering and keeping him from his plans to infiltrate the moon base, so he doesn't want to show back up on her radar. i don't think lucretia confronted barry when he possessed pringles, because barry still puts the instructions on his coin for the old puzzle, but if he'd been caught, i think he would've anticipated it changing, so i think she discovered it after the fact.
i don't know if i even think they've spoken since lucretia created the bureau, because that's when they start to become, like, "enemies," officially, as lucretia genuinely starts to villainize barry, however reluctantly. although, depending on how much contact they'd had before that, depending on if she's aware of him out in the world working against her or if from her pov he just sorta disappeared somewhere mysterious, maybe she's not even really thinking of barry as 'the red robe,' and more thinking of herself. because she does tell thb originally that the red robes are all dead and gone, and if she'd truly anticipated them coming into contact with barry, wouldn't she have said, there's still one out there, he's dangerous, don't talk to him, etc, like she does later? maybe the red robes story was originally just an easy way to explain away why the relics existed, and privately, to hate herself for her role in it. maybe she doesn't even realize she's villainized her old friend until that consequence makes itself clear by accident, and then there's nothing for her to do but lean into it and turn the remnants of their family against him for real.
