jake english better go into the witness protection program
stuff stuff stuff
Your Best Man
I think a part of the Homestuck fandom sees Dave's reluctance to fight as a sign of him being weak, even if it's used as a joke.
Rose, Dirk, Vriska, and other characters who are at the forefront of action, are simply avoidant of their feelings and able to compartmentalize their fear or self-preservation, while Dave, Jake and Tavros cannot.
Being a good, reckless fighter serves the Narrative well in Homestuck, since the goal is to fight a boss at the end of the game. But we are shown time and again that it does fuck all in the character's personal lives.
Rose, Dirk, Bro, Terezi, Vriska, Equius, Eridan, and Jade, to some degree, have tumultuous relationships (some more than others) that revolve around their inability to be vulnerable and honest. For Dirk, Bro, and Equius, this is fueled by toxic masculinity, and it's a core aspect of Lord English. The characters who have a consistent decent emotional life (they are still teenagers after all) are Karkat, John, Dave, Feferi, Kanaya, Roxy and Jane. Not all of them refuse to fight or are bad at it, but it's not their primary way to respond to an obstacle. Karkat is aggressive, yes, but he never attacks his friends and he airs out every bit of discomfort, which ultimately is what Dave likes about him, compared to the cold silence and dutiful martyrdom of Bro. John has feelings he has a hard time putting into words, but being raised by a man who cares what he has to say, he still tries, and he receives Vriska's feelings with compassion.
Jake makes exception to this because he is both a bad fighter and unable to put his fear and discomfort aside for the "greater good", like when he refuses to kiss Aranea simply because he doesn't want to. He is supposed to use his incredible power to beat the Condesce, but he doesn't want to, and that makes him "weak" in the eyes of Aranea. Tavros is also an exception, for the same reason.
As an aside, I hate how this has morphed into some kind of "girls rule, boys drool" mentality in the fandom. "Dave is so lame while Jade and Rose are so cool" NO!!! Rose and Jade are also lame! Rose gets wasted in front of her date and Jade is a furry! I don't think it's cool to remove what makes them human, actually. I understand the desire to prop up female characters for once, but all it does is recreate the action girl trope.
I think the inability to compartmentalize is seen as a failure in both men and women. When men can't forgo their fear of death and pain in favor of going to war or fighting, they are weak. It's emasculating. When women can't put aside their feelings in favor of coddling men's, they are whiny and useless. Homestuck has a habit of inverting the gender of the trope. This is why it's Vriska calling Tavros whiny and useless, not the other way around. This is why it's Vriska calling (Vriska) weak-- okay it's all Vriska, but you get my point.
I can get behind a good "the weak and lame boys vs the aurafarming gigachad girls of Homestuck" joke, but ultimately Homestuck is telling you that being a stoic, self-sacrificial hero is NOT a cool thing, and it makes you a bad friend and a bad partner.

no it isnt
i find it funny when deltarune fans say "the towns gonna blame Susie for Kris and Noelle's death on the weird route" because like
you remember in chapter 4? when the church was trashed and Susie wrote Gerson's letter for him and left it on Alvin's desk? and people were saying "oh Alvin's going to think Susie's mocking him with his dead fathers name oh the town will hate Susie oh the town will think she robbed the church"?
and then chapter 5 rolled around and nobody hated Susie? and Alvin found the strength to keep writing? and he forgave the mess and the fact that some items were missing? and everybody understood this was not an act of malice?
...i dont think the townspeople hate Susie as much as the fandom makes it out to be. i think Susie is a bit clouded by her trauma and she doesnt realize how much people actually do or do not hate her
John ur so gay
People who think Elliot page is reaping male privilege in his career are on some fucking shit he is such an obvious example of how trans men are treated completely fucking differently than cis men are.
#Sinon is deeply femininely coded in a bad way in the original text (the Aeneid actually bc he’s not in the odyssey) #like its not even subtext he is very explicitly a failure of proper masculinity and honor #ESPECIALLY when all of the traditionally feminine traits are stripped from Odysseus and Sinon retains them
@trans-masked thanks for the insight, I honestly dont know that much about this subject.
Many news sources comment on Nolan's alterations to the role, because he removes many of those underhanded traits and makes him a figure of honor and bravery. imho these changes are still transphobic and misogynistic, because he instead makes Page's Sinoh a naive young solider eager to please and who doesnt know anything about any strategy or deceit. In that way, he's just stripped of agency and his entire role in the story, which makes it strange to choose this character for Page to play except through the lens of transphobia.
Who does Elliot Page play in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey? We explain Page's Sinon, an infamous mythic character who plays a vital role.
Christopher Nolan has made a career out of keeping audiences guessing, and his upcoming epic 'The Odyssey' has been no exception. Since the
Its not that nolan cant import crossover characters, but people's claims that Elliot Page's role in the odyssey is "the first good role nolans given him" when its a cameo of a character from a different story that a casual viewer isnt familiar with and that is clearly not a role he would have given to any cis man is just stupid to me. Elliot Page is 37 and he is cast as a young, naive recruit and described as "terrified" to play the role.
Elliot Page admitted he was terrified to take on the role of Sinon in Christopher Nolan's adaptation of "The Odyssey."
This is just not how you report on a cis man over 30 playing a role or the role a cis man over 30 typically plays.
Also when people thought the role was actually going to be Achilles, who is also not in the Odyssey and is a well-known queer figure but in popular culture still associated with masculinity (and is at least a character people KNEW), he got enough online backlash it was commented on by news sources. Elon Musk was a huge part of the hate campaign against him and Lupita Nyong'o, singling them both out specifically.
As Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey approaches its 2026 release, actor Elliot Page faces a wave of online toxicity.
Ill finish some full pieces soon but another sketch dumpp for nooww. Also selling these two as adopts if anyones interested !!^_^
