1892 John Singer Sargent - Lady Agnew of Lochnaw
(Scottish National Gallery)
Come and get it, MF
Study of the portrait, and the finished ‘Portrait of Madame X’, 1884, by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925).
I was first introduced to JSS through the Bilmore Estate and all of its brilliant works hanging on the walls.
Madame X-clutch of the dress, poised on the table, exuberant red hair in contrast-Just incredible.
J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, and Pat Rothfuss, as they chip their magnum opi out of stone: no I can’t possibly finish this in the next decade that would be Blasphemy to the Fantasy Muses.
Brandon Sanderson: gimme a week and the sequel will be out.
Jeff Koons in Versailles, 2009

I guess it’s the little things in life that I live for... Cooking a meal for family and friends to enjoy, having them appreciate the passion I put into crafting something delicious is really rewarding! Herb rubbed tenderloin with sriracha/brown sugar cauliflower always makes me smile, and the company makes it worth the effort.
Sons of Ragnar When They’re Sick
Bjorn:
Attempts to sweat it out hitting the gym
Refuses to accept he is actually sick
Can’t sleep and resorts to excessive caffeine
Sick? No, he doesn’t get sick
Flu sweat is not sexy
Calls his mom to bring him soup and more Red Bull
Eventually drugged by crushed cold meds in his protein shake
Ubbe:
The world is ending!
He is going to die!
There is no hope!
Pass him his will, now!
Small cold? More like the plague!
He can’t feel his face!
Oh gods! This is it! There is a light!
Hvitserk:
Takes a blanket to the couch and stays there
Wanders to the bathroom and bed when he needs to
Bring snacks!
Beer is not proper fluids, despite his argument
Extra cuddly
Likes his back and tummy rubbed
Needs constant attention
Sigurd:
Nothing some turmeric and cider vinegar won’t fix
Hot baths and hot tea!
Sleeps more than usual
Organic cotton tissues only please!
Doctors? They’re only trying to sell him on big chemical corporations
Makes extra massage, reflexology, reiki, aura clearing, and naturopath appointments
This is obviously Ivar’s doing sneezing near him three weeks ago
Ivar:
Don’t talk to him!
Don’t touch him!
Does he look like he’s feeling okay?
The flu is worse than any pain he has ever felt!
An excuse to be even grumpier than usual
Squash soup? The cure all!
Only two days? That felt like a lifetime!

I don’t speak with anyone for a week. I just sit on a stone by the sea.
Anna Akhmatova, from Plantain
… and there is something about the achingly bright expanse of blue that makes me feel infinitely placid, infinitely calm, infinitely spacious. Something there is about the ceaseless, unperturbed ebb and flow … about the vast masses of green-blue water … that heals all my uneasy questionings and self-searchings.
Sylvia Plath, from a letter
You would rather have gone on feeling nothing, emptiness and silence; the stagnant peace of the deepest sea, which is easier than the noise and flesh of the surface.
Margaret Atwood, from Eurydice
The sea has many voices, Many Gods and many voices.
T.S. Eliot, from The Dry Salvages
Look there: how she approaches impatiently over the sea. Do you not feel the thirst and the hot breath of her love? She would suck at the sea and drink its depth into her heights; and the sea’s desire rises toward her with a thousand breasts. It wants to be kissed and sucked by the thirst of the sun; it wants to become air and height and a footpath of light, and itself light.
Friedrich Nietzsche, from Thus Spoke Zarathustra
The sea is working, working in my silence.
Pablo Neruda, from Nothing More
She knows what she wants: she wants to remain standing still in the sea. And so she remains. The woman neither receives nor transmits. She does not need to communicate. She knows that she is gleaming from the water, the salt and the sun. In some obscure way her dripping hair is like that of a shipwrecked person.
Clarice Lispector, from An Apprenticeship, or the Book of Delights
I wish you a kinder sea.
Emily Dickinson, from a letter
“I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist. I did not wish to be accused of dark, twisted inventions, or of misrepresenting the human potential for deplorable behaviour. The group-activated hangings, the tearing apart of human beings, the clothing specific to castes and classes, the forced childbearing and the appropriation of the results, the children stolen by regimes and placed for upbringing with high-ranking officials, the forbidding of literacy, the denial of property rights: all had precedents, and many were to be found not in other cultures and religions, but within western society.“”
— Margaret Atwood on The Handmaid’s Tale in a 2012 interview
