Alan Merrill at the Cafe Wha? in Greenwich Village 1966 with his band The Kaleidoscope. Since there was a San Francisco band with the same name they changed their band’s name to The Rayne and then after replacing guitarist Jimmy Reilly with Jake Hooker in 1967 the name changed again to Watertower West. The band broke up in 1968 when the bass player Bucky Hall went to College in Boston and then Alan Merrill left to reside in Tokyo.

The Kaleidoscope and The Rayne lineups were: Alan Merrill, Bucky Hall, Carl Peachman and Jimmy Reilly.

The Watertower West lineup was: Alan Merrill, Bucky Hall, Carl Peachman and Jake Hooker.
