xanax poem
as the darkness seeped in,
i whispered to myself that it would all be okay.
the shark-skinned brothers danced around me
like a demented little freakshow.
i cried out for help
but no one would listen.
they screamed out my name
and i tried to scream back.
red cliffs burned like a sacrificial hearth.
blazing smokestacks and blackened pipelines.
i wake up to the steady drumbeats of my heart.
the woman in white stands at the doorway.
she asks if i’m ready to confess..
no.
of course i’m not.
but i do, so that the shark-skinned brothers don’t visit me again.
and i’m send to my grave
for those crimes
i never did.
Imagine all motion sickness of standing still. Imagine a circuit breaker shorting from the back of your brain; the fork to the toaster, the copper lining of your veins. I threw up in the storm drain at the street fair and blamed it on bad nectarines; shivered in the bend of your arms like a loose wire. Stevie Nicks has said this was the pill that almost did her in; the one that brought hell to her heels, and I can feel the fire unwrap the framework of my spine. I have never lived through a sickness that made me more afraid of my mind by the havoc of my body.

Can we talk about the part of mental illness where you constantly have to second guess and question your perception of reality because you can never be sure that what you experience/perceive to be happening is actually happening:
“Is that person angry at me or is my perception of reality distorted?”
“Is that person avoiding me or is my perception of reality distorted?”
“Is this situation dangerous or is my perception of reality distorted?”
“Does that person have bad intentions or is my perception of reality distorted?”
“Am I bothering that person or is my perception of reality distorted?”
“Did that person ignore me or is my perception of reality distorted?”
“Does that person dislike me or is my perception of reality distorted?”
People will judge you regardless of what you do. Don’t look to them for validation, simply accept all that you are.
