Absolving people of guilt for things that are typically one’s own fault (e.g. unhealthy habits, addictions, rude personalities, criminal behaviors, etc.), and

Saddling people with guilt for things that are generally not one’s own fault (e.g. slavery, colonization, past government policies, the climate, etc).

Together, these create an endless cycle of hopelessness by encouraging people to persist in behaviors that make them unhappy while despairing over past and/or macro-level problems they never had any substantial control over anyway.

That cycle usually produces only two kinds of people:

The Dispirited: people who are so mired in despair they neither take no joy nor find any comfort in anything and instead try to self-soothe with more self-destructive behaviors like drugs, pornography, terminal laziness, etc. (i.e. the “Why would I bother getting a job or starting a family when the world is going to end in ten years because of climate change?” types).

The Insufferable: the woke warriors who turn their despair into hatred by impotently crusading against every perceived societal ill while turning a blind eye to their own faults. (i.e. the “Expecting me to be on time to work is racist against myself and other BIPOC and is a privileged expectation with roots in slavery” types).
