the world is more water than love
->LANCE+1
When Niles holds the boat steady, it takes her a moment to realize what he's doing. "O-oh," Katarina whispers her startlement under her breath, jolting slightly before clambering into the canoe. He's just being kind. "Thank you..." From the first time she was forgiven, or... no, from the first time she set foot in Altea's castle, it has felt less and less strange, these little kindnesses. And what if she gets used to them?
She passes his oar back to him once he's settled, holding her own more trepidatiously. Gray eyes widen by a fraction, pulling it closer. A show? She hadn't particularly intended to participate in the competition itself, but after the help she'd received just before and the grin she's faced with now --
"...hehe." --even she can smile for that. "I guess we did sign up... right?" Though there's something about the look in his eye... something tells her she'd better be prepared as she pushes them a bit further from shore. For now, however, he shrugs, and she takes his answer for what it is. Truthful or not, it's likely the extent of what he's willing to tell her; she won't pry.
"...people always recommend warm drinks to me when I mention that," Katarina admits, a quiet laughter in the corners of her eyes. "Do they do the same to you...?"
And then the conversation turns to her; and then the laughter fades. Like their little boat, her eyes drift vaguely across the water.
"...Niles," she begins, softly spoken. "Do you think... the other people in the mirror were real...? The ones besides Eriella...?" They were real enough to feel, at least; to hug her, to cry alongside her. After a beat she shakes her head. "N-never mind. I'm okay. I just..." Feel like I lost someone again. "...miss them, sometimes."
"There's that smile." From what Niles could tell, it didn't seem like she smiled very often, and he's noticed the way she speaks so quietly. It's not his place to ask her if something happened in her past to make her that way. As curious as he is, this doesn't seem like the time to ask. Not after what they went through in the mirror. One of his hands extends out to take his oar back and it's dipped into the water to begin paddling away from the old man's dock. "I don't know how big this pond is but if we want to talk for a bit, we should head further out, don't you think?"
A small smile forms at the suggestion and the outlaw nods in response. Instantly, he's reminded of Camilla, who had been making him different types of teas to help with his sleep from the moment she'd learned why he tried to stay awake. They helped, but he always thought she helped more. She was patient, calm, and he found her presence far more comforting than anything else he'd tried. "My wife makes a lot of lavender and chamomile teas for me. It helps. I'm still not sure how much, but the routine of it is nice."
At her question, Niles averts his gaze averts down to the water, watching it ripple as his oar cuts through the surface. There are a few beats of silence at her question, and he doesn't know what to say. It's hard for him to tell what she needs him to say. "I only really met Yucie... She seemed real, but I don't know if there was a way to know for sure. I ran into her in the forest and she had that demon following her and sword she'd told me about." The way his energy was sapped from him and he'd been brought to his knees (not in the fun way) felt real too.
Another pause though this one is shorter than the last. "Do want to talk about the rest of them? That might help."
KEEP ON DANCING AT THE PEGAPONY CLUB!
Mission Board: Pearlescent -- Charity gala!
"Hmm..." Camilla scans the room. Somebody had to know something... "Maybe it's the owners we should be investigating?"
The doors swung open and a man with an air of danger stepped into the club. He seemed to keep his wits about him, scanning the room before deciding on an open booth near the entrance. He was big, he reminded Camilla of Hans... The thought sent a shiver down her spine. But Hans did always know his fair share of her father's plans and secrets... So if the similarities held true...
"Well that looks like a man who knows some naughty secrets." Camilla says, making her way towards the man before Niles could protest. She doesn't have to worry about Niles' protests, as the bartender distracts him with a request to handle some unruly patrons in the back corner.
"Well hello there handsome." She flashes a sugary smile and slides up next to him. "Care for a drink?"
"Just some company would be nice." The man's smile is lecherous, like he's imagining what little her clothes hide. "You've gotta be quite warm in all that though."
"Warm?" She looks up at him through her eyelashes. "Quite the opposite actually." She smiles as she slides up closer to him, trying not to lash out when he puts a hand on her bare hip. She must not have hid it very well.
"Thought you were cold." The man challenges.
"I am." She says innocently, placing a hand on his chest. A two others join the man, bringing drinks with them. Drinks Camilla didn't see get made. They slide in next to her and the man, trapping her in the booth. The man passes one of the drinks towards her. "Oh no thanks darling, I'm fine."
"You've been working hard, surely you're a little thirsty." The man raises an eyebrow, daring her to refuse. "I got something to wet your tongue if you don't want that." One of the newcomers say, adding his hand to her hip and running it up her side.
cw; drugging, attempted assault
Niles returns to the bar after dealing with a couple of troubling guests. It wasn't difficult to make quick work of them, despite their loud and annoying protests as he guided them towards the door and tossed them out. He scans the room for Camilla again, and for a moment, he remains still.
His gaze narrows in the man's direction, taking in the other's appearance. Every look is a subtle one, trying to memorize the smaller, more distinguishing features on the chance that the man becomes important later. What reason would he have to be here, besides to discard his wealth and attempt to climb the disgusting social ladder.
Niles seen enough from his time on the streets to know what kind of person that guy was, and he curses to himself as Camilla leaves to approach him anyways. He wanted to grab her hand, to steer her to another part of the room but he knows when she makes up her mind, there is little he can do to change it. With what he can only assume was the intention of gathering more information, the outlaw returns to his work of patrolling the room and listening for any useful information.
What happens next is a blur. The man puts his hands on Camilla, and instinctively, Niles moves to help her. Without so much as a word, he approaches the man, brings his fist back and lets it loose to connect with his face. The pop of his jaw is loud and the force sends him backwards against the wall before the rest of them run off. That didn't take much. Cowards.
His arms wrap protectively around her for support as he helps her to her feet. Slowly, as not to cause her anymore dizziness, and he braces himself for her to lean on him. A few moments later, Niles takes off his cloak to wrap around her shoulders before allowing his arms to settle back around her again. "We can tell someone in a bit. Let's just take a minute. I want to make sure you're okay first."

[daddy voice] SO EXCITING
+ authority || aphotic
The day Ophelia arrived at Garreg Mach, she felt a swarm of malcontent in the balance of forces governing life. There's simply too many to solve at one time, but as twilight is inevitable, so is Ophelia.
It's almost as though Garreg Mach itself is a focal point of discontentedness, as though the very universe itself converges at this singular spot to ensure that something is always happening…
…but that would be ridiculous.
Still, Ophelia begins her work with a manor of deepest dark. She could feel its darkness blocks away, and she, the light, will purge it.
And as luck would have it, she's accompanied by one of her father's dear friends! This is going to be the best séance ever!
Ophelia is especially energized on this day, which means that her powers will work especially well and they will have nothing at all to worry about. At all. She practically skips to their destination, and then she walks backwards because Niles is not walking as fast as her, and then she skips again, and then she pauses to look at a flower pot with fascinating energy, and then she stops.
“Hehe, it's so fun that I get to work with my father's close friend and colleague!” she tells Niles, delighted. “It's like fate for our bloodlines to once again be put to the test together! Are you excited?”
@nohrianoutlaw
He's seen the inside of plenty of manors, abandoned or otherwise. As a teen, he used to quietly sneak his way in to look for anything of value to steal and sell for quick cash or trade for other things he might have needed while living on the streets. Usually he would have knocked a few things over, caused a little bit of destruction as well, but he wasn't that person anymore. Still, he found himself thinking why someone needed to spend so much money on things that would sit in a drawer or on a dusty shelf in the corner of the room. What was the point besides the need to show off wealth?
This house seemed to have a different story than some of the others back in Nohr. According to the townspeople, it's walls were haunted by spirits of a vengeful family and all who set foot inside met their end. Niles wasn't sure he believed it. Ghosts and spirits were not so easily seen but then again, the outlaw has only encountered the faceless and golems summoned by Nohrian mages during the war.
His brows furrow as he watches Ophelia practically skip down the hallway. She's almost the spitting image of Odin and for a moment, Niles misses his fellow retainer more than he'd care to admit. His daughter is a good substitute for the time being. And a part of him supposes Odin would hardly be his happy, exhausting self if something were to happen to his daughter while she was here.
Niles switches his bow to his other hand as he follows the young mage down one of Garreg Mach's side streets towards the old, supposedly haunted, house.
"I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm excited. I'd rather not tell your father you were mauled by vengeful spirits in the process of whatever it is you want to do here." There's a shrug of his shoulders. It's not dismissive, he's not trying to make it seem like he's not being supportive. His primary interest was her protection though he couldn't help but play along with her theatrics, if only a little bit. "What's the plan, o Child of Darkness?"

LET'S MAKE THIS FUN!
Mission board: Excavation -- Turkeese hunting! BOW +1
The monastery is a big place with many people. Many people mean many mouths to feed. Many mouths to feed mean a lot of food is needed. Now usually, this isn't the issue at the monastery; between the many agreements and business deals Garreg Mach has secured around the entire continent, and the many willing bountiful donations of the faithful, Claude doesn't recall any stories of any moments in history when the place was wanting for food.
Until recently, that is. The recent war has left much of both the monastery and the surrounding town devastated, and it wasn't much kinder to the rest of Fódlan, either. Resources have run dry, supply is on pause as the merchants, towns and ports have to pick themselves back up before they can think of anyone else, and in the meantime, damaged or no, Garreg Mach has been a haven for many a refugee and lost soul with wounds on body and spirit alike, and nowhere else to go.
So, when a prime opportunity to restock on food presents itself, the Academy quite literally cannot afford to let it slide. One thing leads to another, and Claude heads off into the fields where the Turkeese flocks have been seen, his trusty bow and also a Knight in Seiros in tow.
"Niles, is it? Or Sir Niles?" Claude inquires with a smile mirroring the man's own; he doesn't look like one for formalities, but the House Leader prefers nevertheless to be certain. "Nice to meet ya, and thanks for the compliment. You're skilled with bows yourself, by the looks of it? Looking forward to seeing your work."
The birds seem either wholly unbothered or still blissfully unaware to their arrival. A few plump specimens separate from the flock; nocking an arrow, Claude looks at Niles again, the smile evolving into a slightly more playful smirk.
"Let's see how many we bag, shall we?"
With that, he takes aim, and fires.
Roll: 1d20 = 3. 1 point! Total: 1
The arrow meets its mark, and one bird flops over limp without so much as a peep. Two others jump a few steps back, as if surprised - but don't bother to fly off.
These things could use a predator or two more in their lives, Claude thinks to himself in amusement, before glancing at Niles again; a light gesture of his head, inviting the other to try his luck.
His lip curls upwards at the formality, only for a second, before his expression dissolves back into that same smile from moments ago and the outlaw lets out a laugh. He can't recall anyone anyone calling him sir back in Nohr. His station as retainer never called for it, and his past or certainly never impressed anyone enough for it to catch on. Perhaps it was because he'd joined the knights here? He wouldn't doubt that there were others more honorable and worthy of such than him in these ranks.
"Just Niles is fine. You don't have to worry about using any fancy, little titles with me." The lilt in his voice is still present, just barely, as he shifts his bow to his other hand and pulls an arrow from his quiver to prepare his own shot. "I am." He doesn't mention that it's the only weapons he's most comfortable with. His head was on a constant swivel during battle anyways, courtesy to his larger blind spot one his left.
He watches as the arrow cleanly hits it's mark, and the bird falls to the ground. The rest scatter away from the perceived danger, only a few feet away. "You're a pretty good shot. Not that I'm surprised."
When Claude gives him the signal, he nocks his own arrow, just barely using his the edge of his mouth as an anchor when he draws back. A few seconds pass as he takes aim, and then releases.
Roll: 1d20 = 10. 1 point! (total: 1)
The bird drops dead on the ground, and one of the other's heads shoots up. It makes a honking noise to signal it's friends before the flock moves to a different spot a few feet away. Likely in attempt to escape the danger despite the unurgency in the way these creatures seem to be moving. "Do you think the rumors are true? I'm not sure there things are as violent as people say they are."
NOT EVERYONE CAN BE MASTER CHEFS
Mission Board: Anniversary 2025 -- Health seminar! NEW ANY SKILL +1
What Eirika can do in a kitchen is not something she would define as cooking. She can make sandwiches that are good enough to take on picnics and she can ladle soup, but anything more involved is left to the chefs they employ. She has no personal chef at Garreg Mach, and though it's not necessarily a skill she must learn she finds herself signing up for the healthy eating seminar all the same. It's always good to broaden one's horizons.
As another occupies the space next to her, Eirika turns toward him. A tall man with silver hair and an eye patch, and is surprised when her name falls from his lips. It's not unusual for someone in Renais to know her name but this is Fódlan.
"That's right," she nods. "Of Renais. But I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage, sir. You are...?"
As they speak, the teacher walks by and sets down their recipe card. The top of the card reads 'Healthy Sweet Bun' and the list that follows looks simple enough.
"Typically this recipe requires sugar." The instructor speaks as they continue to hand out cards. "But we will be substituting with local honey. And to give it a little extra sweetness, we'll be adding a special brand of healthy cocoa powder to the dough."
The rest of the list includes their choice of fruit mixed with more honey to fill the altered buns recipe. Eirika isn't sure how this will turn out but she's ready to give it a try.
"Niles from the Kingdom of Nohr." As important as his position of retainer was to him, it holds little weight here so in the moment, he does not mention it. "Pleasure to meet you." The bow he gives her is short, and his gaze is fixed on her as the professor circles the room.
"What's Renais like? Fodlan is the furthest from Nohr that I've travelled." The question was innocent enough, and he wanted to satisfy his curiosity. All he knew was her name.
He takes a moment to look the card over when it's handed to him and raises a hand to scratch at the back of his head. Baking seemed more precise than cooking, and he didn't attempt often. There was never a need for him to while living at the Nohrian palace. Seeing honey was required at two different parts of the recipe gave him pause, as did the healthy cocoa powder. With the amount of honey that was listed, would it make a difference as to whether sugar was used or not?
Niles picks up the container of cocoa powder, examining the label (covered in text that was too small for his eye to focus on) intently and turning it in his hands before setting it down. "You got any idea what makes this healthy?"
The Sweetest Sanguine Lullaby
[ NOHR ] - A quick-paced dance that focuses heavily on precise footwork and bold movements, evoking the image of two soldiers in battle.
She melts into his touch as he brushes his thumb over the ring on her finger. Any and all tension or worries she may have had leave her as she sinks against him. His calloused hands are warm and grounding. They always manage to keep her from flying too high.
She knows he's right, she needs to do better about keeping her work separate. Normally she'd bite back, point out all the ways he did the same thing. But she just hums in agreement, too content to want to bite.
Her bliss is broken when he mentions looking at homes. Here. In Fodlan.
Away from Nohr.
She sits up and stares at him, a million questions on her mind all warring to be the first asked. "You... He..."
"Really?" Relief washes over her. "I'd... I'd like that. But..." She swallows hard, one question pushing forward over all others. "I... What about Nohr? I..."
can't just abandon my home. My siblings. My title. All goes unvoiced.
If she were in Nohr, she would be aching to leave the castle and have a home of her own. Away from court, away from politics, away from everything. And here was quickly becoming home too. The beautiful stone walls and green rolling hills. The bustling, friendly, market place.
Her siblings were here too. Mostly. But they were more than capable of visiting, and letters were enough to keep her connected to Xander and the others whenever they did return to Nohr.
Her title... It weighed on her like a stoneborn on her shoulders. It had always been the thorns that cut her hand, the poison on the surface of her drink.
She has no doubt that Leo and Xander would do anything to give Niles a title, to make him her equal.
But what if she didn't want that? What if instead of dragging him to her tower, she climbed down to him?
What if she gave up her title?
"Yes." She sighs, the answer lifting her spirits. Her shoulders drop, she relaxes again, the feeling of a callous thumb brushing over her hair. Warm, rough fingers tucking hair behind her ear and cupping her cheek. "Yes I'd like that very much." She nods, closing her eyes for a moment and smiling. "Please... I trust you. Find us a good ho-..." Her voice catches on the word, almost like she can't believe she's truly saying it. She cups his face with her free hand and looks him in that endless blue eye that shined like the skies.
"A good home."
He doesn't want her to feel pressured or rushed. In the time she takes to process while forming half sentences, he thinks about rescinding the thought entirely. He doesn't want to force her to choose between their home in Nohr and the life they both began to build here. He knew how important her family was to her, how much they meant, and how she liked having them close by. The last thing Niles wanted to do was take her away from that but they were capable of visiting, just as they were both capable of heading back to Nohr for the same reason. Two of her siblings were here already anyways, and it wasn't like they would stay away from Nohr forever.
He hoped they wouldn't. The reform work he proposed to Xander felt very hands off, especially now that he was here, but every now and then he still wanted updates on the progress.
There had been a been a part of Niles that always thought Leo would be the one he followed so closely. It was a role he had been content in, one he would continue to be comfortable in. He and Camilla had come a long way from the start of their relationship, and somewhere along the way he'd grown just as comfortable and trusting around her as he was with Leo.
If she hadn't wanted anymore from him, she could have tossed him aside. He was glad she hadn't. He was grateful she accepted his many apologies for the way he acted. Niles doesn't think this moment would be happening if she hadn't. She doesn't need to treat him so gently and yet, he cannot bring himself to protest even a little bit. Camilla still gave him the affection he craved and it was one of the many ways he was reminded that he was loved.
All he wanted was to do right by her. So far, he feels like he has. A place for both of them to make their own was a big step, and it made him a little nervous but it's overshadowed by the feeling of warmth that washes over him when she cups his cheek. His eye closes just for a moment and he leans his head into her hand. "I'll do my best. I'm gonna need some help though." There's a pause, and a warm smile similar to hers washes over his face. "We need to make sure we pick the right one but we have time though. I don't want to rush."

Anni Board, Sword +1 with Niles
The outlaw can't help but smile at the nickname Louis has began using back in the mirror. It was significantly better than some of the other things he'd been called, and neither of them really knew much about each other yet. That would come with time. Their circumstances hardly mattered. Louis and Katarina were among couple people he'd deemed worthy of getting to know him. "We probably have. They're one of those things that we can't really find a way to avoid."
His gaze flickers towards Louis's backpack as he's pulling out food for the both of them. It's kind of him; the way he thinks about other people like that. Had Niles met him at a younger age or different circumstances, he knows it would have been harder for him to accept the other's friendship. For a moment he wonders what he's packed, but they've just begun and they have sticks to find.
"Magic isn't my thing anyways. It doesn't seem like it's yours either." Whatever kinds of magic that had been used to create Eriella's prison seemed like it would be far too complex for him to understand anyways.
Louis hands him the flask and he takes a moment to peak through the opening at it's contents before deciding to take a swig before passing it back to the other. After everything they'd experienced he had expected it to be something else but it's a pleasant surprise when warm chamomile and lavender hit the back of his throat and warm his chest. "If there had been a way to bring him back with us, I'm sure he would have liked it here." Niles can't help but frown at the mention of forgetting him and their other teammates. It couldn't have been helped, nor did they know it was going to happen, but the way the world played with the way they perceived information and it still didn't sit right with with him.
"Camilla and I were talking a couple nights ago and I just wanted to ask..." There's a pause as he tries to determine how sensitive this topic was, but the other man mentioned it first and that seemed just as good of an invitation as any to delve into a heavier discussion. "After you lost your eyes, did it start affecting your memory at all?"
HE'S FOUND THAT GETTING USED TO OTHERS COMES EASIER NOW, having spent so long away from Court and the nature of royalty has given him a newer outlook on which to judge things, one devoid of fake smiles and grating laughter as his head tilts towards his companions. Louis sees it better than most in a way, the war weariness that creeps in behind smiles and jagged edges that permeate the man beside him. There's a shared experience here, one that needs not to be mentioned before he nods agreement, "and if we can spare those that come after from the selfsame cycle it will have been worth it."
In another life they would have been enemies perhaps, destined to fight to the death under banners unfamiliar, yet that life is more than a world away, buried at the bottom of some distant well and sealed for a lifetime. This one, Louis finds, is a far more relaxed one, far removed from the embers of war, and he for one intends to make the most of it in the time he has found himself given.
"I tried to learn once you know, but I found that the lance is far more dangerous of a calling in my hand than the art of mystics." It hadn't stopped him from attempting to understand the prison of course, yet the world had left him with little more than a sea of questions waiting for him to answer.
Louis weighs the stick in his hand twice before hefting it overhead and pivoting his arm hard enough to send it soaring through the air, flying free before it arcs to sink deep into the depths of the forest. In a breath he turns, pulling his own flask and letting the lavender linger against his senses, pulling him into a lull of calmness. "I tried, I'll admit, to drag him back through the mirror, and yet whatever magic kept him resident was insistent he remains there." The once retainer suspects no one else truly managed to notice, not the haphazard efforts of a slightly desperate man attempting to drag another out of a prison undeserved.
"Ah, and here I thought no one would notice." The smile is sad in a way, bringing his hand upwards to run through his hair. He'd thought, in a way, that his actions would go unnoticed, the shudder in his movements that passed in the flash of an eye. "Faces mostly, and certain details, I'm still... finding myself waking up at times and wondering why and where I am. It passes, but it lingers all the same, likely a consequence of being the first to be erased."

The Sweetest Sanguine Lullaby
[ NOHR ] - A quick-paced dance that focuses heavily on precise footwork and bold movements, evoking the image of two soldiers in battle.
Camilla nods absently. It makes sense that he would be worried about the criminal reforms Xander was trying to enact. His question makes her chuckle. Camilla had not packed lightly, and the longer she stayed, the more she accumulated. "Darling I'm certain that I outgrew that tiny little dorm space since the moment I moved in to it."
She glances down to the braided band on her finger. "It would be nice to have space for Nina if she decides to come. She'd probably prefer to stay in the dorms, but having a room for her..." She sighs. "As an option at least. And it would be nice to get away from the campus for more than just missions. I feel obliged to help the students any time while I'm on campus." She sighs again. "I've never had to worry about finding somewhere to live though, I wouldn't even know where to start."
He couldn't help but smile when she laughs despite how quiet and lighthearted it was. He wasn't going to suggest that she send some of her things back to Nohr. Most of it was likely personal items, weapons, and other things she'd acquired she'd probably acquired during her time here. Even having this conversation made his soul a little lighter, and he knew she was in for the long haul when they'd exchanged rings during the war but having a space together meant more to him than she would realize. "Yeah, I know. I was trying to cut you some slack." Niles couldn't help tease her though he's gently taking her hand and brushing his thumb over the ring on her finger.
"She can stay wherever she wants. I think you deserve to keep your work separate too. It might do you some good." He wasn't implying anything, there was no malice in his tone either, he just didn't want her to burn out. Or devote herself wholeheartedly for little in return. "I've been looking around a little bit, mostly between smaller patrol routes. There are a few in town if you feel like starting there. I can figure out who to contact."
[ CORN ] - A new strain of corn has been bred in Bergliez with a curious trait—it pops when exposed to heat, becoming light and fluffy! Help yourself to a bag; it's a little bland on its own, but you get the feeling you could find something to spice it up.
ETHEREAL BALL 2026
"I'm Niles. I don't think we've had the pleasure of meeting." Pleasure, indeed, and it was all his. He recognized the woman as faculty of the academy, and seen her in classrooms but that was the extent of his memory, it seemed. Despite the greeting, the outlaw doesn't offer a hand and only turns his head to spare a quick glace at her before directing his gaze back to the table in front of them. The dismissiveness is only partially intentional to gauge her reaction. The other part of him is focused on the popped corn.
"Have you tried this yet?" He points to the bags, and his head turns towards her again as he's pulling a deep purple lily from his bouquet and offering it to her. Might as well trade while they were here, right? "You know what's good? That blend of spices down at the other end of the table seems pretty strong."
[ LEICESTER ] - An expressive, rhythmic dance that is only well-known in its homeland. Sweeping, dramatic movements and making noise with clapping and foot-stomping are required for this passionate style.
His smile almost drops at the presence of his new partner. It doesn't, however, because the aforementioned individual doesn't deserve that much. The corners of Tsubaki's lips tighten; perhaps this is a sign that he's overestimated his own presence at the dance floor.
"Are you lost?" Tsubaki speaks first, grip subtly tightening. He's reminded of his shattered hand-mirror, a trinket he brought from Hoshido, and finds that he hasn't gotten over its shatter. "Exit to your left. You're welcome."
He spins Niles towards the direction, sharp with insistence, and tries to let go. Unfortunately, it's hard: the dance number doesn't require the pairs to part yet.

Of course his next dance partner was Tsubaki. Of all people it had to be Tsubaki. The groan he lets out is loud enough for the Hoshidan retainer to hear though he's not sure it's enough to express his displeasure that envelopes him every time their paths cross. Granted, it hasn't been very many times but their interactions during their last mission hadn't helped things. Neither had the war. Certainly not the war. At least he wasn't yapping on and on about how flawless he looked.
"I could ask the same of you." Why he had made his way back to the dance floor was beyond him. Especially after accidentally stepping on Camilla's foot and watching her roll her ankle. Maybe he should step on Tsubaki's too. It would certainly put more of a damper on the other man's night.
Damn, if it wasn't tempting.
"You want to get rid of me so bad, don't you? To think we could have gone the whole night avoiding each other." There's a sharpness in his tone, one he normally reserved for enemies. Tonight Tsubaki hardly seemed worth his time. Causing a scene wouldn't end well here either.
As the other takes him by the shoulders and they spin with the sway of the music, somewhere in between Niles had pulled one of his lilies free from his bouquet to slide it into one of the folds of Tsubaki's clothing. It wasn't as subtle as he wanted it to be but he could care less. He wasn't giving Tsubaki much of a choice in the matter, and whatever he did with it afterwards was beyond him.
"Here. So we won't have cross paths again this evening."

As amused as Niles is at the offer, it takes a moment of him staring at the other. There's some hesitance in accepting it though he pockets it without much of a second thought. He knew what Jakob was implying and it almost made him chuckle. Camilla hadn't had a problem kissing him before they arrived but instead of saying that, he forced a half smile.
"Well, aren't you subtle? I bet you wouldn't dare give one to Corrin, would you?" Said smile is turning more into a smirk now and he tries to keep the lilt in his voice. His tone didn't suggest he was grateful but he couldn't help but try to push Jakob's buttons anyways. "But fine, if you think a lowlife like me needs a little more help in seeming decent, then I should thank you for your trouble, right?"
He pulls out one of his lilies to set it in the other's hand before giving the butler's shoulder a couple hearty pats. "Here. We might as well trade."

[ NOHR ] - A quick-paced dance that focuses heavily on precise footwork and bold movements, evoking the image of two soldiers in battle.
She smiles as he tucks the flower into her hair, and she can't keep it from growing when he compliments her. "I know." It was cocky, but there was no point in denying the truth.
"You're pretty handsome yourself." She tucks a deep purple tulip into the collar of his shirt, letting her fingers graze against his skin when she withdrew her hand.
The lights begin to dim as the festivities for the second part of the night begins. Magic glowing butterflies light the edges of the halls and walkways, providing a small amount of light.
Camilla closes her eyes and sighs. She imagines how beautiful it is outside right now, the stars twinkling overhead. "Do you ever think about going back to Nohr?"
"I try. I had some help with my outfit so I can't take all the credit but if you insist on complimenting me like that I won't deny it." Most of it he'd picked out himself but the embroidered stars along the bottom of his cape was his favorite part. Especially since Camilla had taken the time to do it for him.
She sticks the flower into the collar of his shirt and Niles can't help but smile in return now. It's soft and warm, and unlike the smile he normally gives, this one isn't full of mischief. It's grows a bit more difficult to see as the lights dim, and a part of him wants to venture outside to look at the moon and the stars. He hasn't gotten very many opportunities to do so since arriving, but he is content sitting here with her. And with the weight of her head resting comfortably on his shoulder.
Her question gives him pause, only for a moment, as he tries to think of how he wants to give her his answer. "Only sometimes. Just to see how well the reforms for the criminal population are working." His feelings were a little complicated in that regard. Nohr was home, it always would be. Though Niles felt that there wasn't a whole lot for him there when the some of the people who were most important to him were here.
"I've been meaning to ask if you think we might be outgrowing our space here?" Granted it wasn't a lot of space, but somehow they made it work. It helped that he'd packed light and only traveled with his necessities. He just wanted some place they could call their own. "I'd follow you if you wanted to go back though."

"Ice would be fine." She pecks his cheek. "Don't bother Elise, let her have fun. It'll heal on it's own soon enough." She leans her head on his shoulder. "Besides, there's plenty of fun we can have later that doesn't require either of us to be on our feet." She whispers just loud enough for him to hear. She knows she's teasing, it was fun giving him a taste of his own medicine from time to time.
"I'll go get it in a bit. You seem comfy." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head and with his other hand, pulled a lily free from his bouquet. The smile that forms on his face next is small, mischievous, but he'd been caught off guard for a short moment before that. "Such naughty thoughts already? How scandalous. The night has barely started." His voice is teasing as he tucks the flower into her hair. "Can't say I blame you though. You're gorgeous."
[ PHOTO-ARTIFEX ] - The ever-popular photo-artifex makes its annual return, allowing users to capture pictures in as little as a flash of light and a moment. Take home something to remember the event by!
"They had something like this in Fortuna, didn't they...?" Katarina looks up at the device, holding it slightly overhead, lens pointed toward the window and ceiling. With a gentle touch, she turns it and adjusts, watching the intersection of day and dusk grow nearer, farther, and nearer again. "But it didn't turn into something you could touch like this, usually..."
She points it at Niles next, unaware that this new and improved photo-artifex isn't quite tall enough to hide the quiet smile behind it. Her finger taps against the button, but nothing clicks; she hadn't yet actually asked if he wanted a picture taken, after all.
"...I like it, though." Lowering her hands, she glances back at him, at the bouquet in his hands. Lilies seem a much happier flower than roses. But it's a bit rude of her to keep looking back on the past like this, isn't it? Despite everything, when she had emerged from the mirror, somehow she had brought her friendships with her.
"...Niles, is it okay if we take a picture together? W-we could trade flowers, and..." A sheepish little laugh swallows the rest of her words, if she'd ever had them. But she doesn't need to keep justifying herself, does she? They're friends. Aren't they? Her smile grows despite itself. They only need to be. "It sounds... fun."
"Yeah, I remember." Niles nods, watching as Katarina inspected the device. Under different circumstances, maybe he would have grown to like Fortuna a bit more but the memories he'd made with her, Louis and the others they'd been on the mission with were some he found himself reflecting on more recently. "It's hard to believe it's almost been a year, huh?" Plenty has happened between now and then though.
For a moment he glances around for the rest of their teammates. He needed to find them later, just to catch up and see how they were doing. Maybe see if he could snag a flower if they were willing. For now, his focus was Katarina. "I'd love that. Come here." He gestures for her to close the space between them and then plucks one of his lilies from his bouquet to pass it off to her.
"Let's take two. That way we can both have one. Pass it here, Kat-Kat?" Louis and his nicknames. Somehow it stuck and he'd ended up using it too. Niles holds his hand out for the device with one hand and slides his other arm around her shoulder while he waits for her to get herself situated. And then he extends his arm out with the lens pointed at them. His finger presses the button once and then a second time before two small photos slide out of the small slot at the front. "You think they turned out well?"
