whumpee's been fading out of their own life: replying less to the group chat, avoiding in person hangs, letting their phone go to voicemail anytime someone calls.
caretaker is worried. whumpee's been stressed before, sure, but they've never withdrawn like this. they're sure something's wrong. no one else seems that bothered by it—whumpee has reasonable excuses every time, surely they're just busy right now!
but caretaker's proven right when their phone buzzes on their nightstand in the middle of the night. muscle memory has the phone to their ear before they're fully awake.
"h'llo?" they manage, yawning.
there's silence on the other end for long enough that caretaker pulls their phone away to hang up, but whumpee's contact photo on the screen makes them hesitate.
in that moment of hesitation, they hear something that jolts the sleepiness out of them: a gunshot.
Whumpee who feels alienated from comfort by the time they're rescued... Whumpee that removes themselves from comfort... Caretaker keeps insisting to them that they deserve comfort so they just start doing it in secret... Moving from the bed to the floor because that's the only way they can sleep anymore...
whumpee who escaped an abusive relationship with old whumper a long time ago and has mostly gotten over it getting into an argument with their new whumper partner and being stunned into complete silence after getting slapped. they get instantly transported back there, all over again. it was all in vain

family member whumper… Hello… why isn’t this utilised more… whumpee grows up with abuse, internalises it, thinks it’s normal OR grows up deeply depressed/resentful seeing other people living normal lives but they’re just Stuck. they live with constant panic attacks and random mental health episodes that they can’t control and their trauma manifests in so many ways that they can’t help but sometimes bitterly wonder what kind of person they would have been like if their childhood had been without whumper. if it remained covert throughout their life and nobody knew - they’re expected to show up at family reunions and be nice and smile and not be a buzzkill while whumper is right there, just in their periphery the whole time, pretending like nothing ever happened.
caretaker actively putting the pieces together and feeling their heart sink into their stomach as whumpee casually tells a story about a whumper, not realising they were being actively abused at the time and that what they’re describing is not healthy at all. bonus points if the story was supposed to be funny or an interesting anecdote and the abuse is only mentioned as an irrelevant background detail
whumpee finally escaping an abusive relationship (romantic platonic familial etc) with whumper and enters a new relationship/develops a strong bond with someone new while still in their fragile state not knowing they’ve run straight into the arms of a new whumper
they keep telling themselves that they should count themselves as lucky that anyone at all is willing to take them in knowing they’re damaged goods, and besides, whumper only snaps sometimes when they’ve had a long day, they’re not hitting them or anything, all normal relationships have conflict!
that is, until the first slap. but well, that doesn’t count, it was a one time thing, whumper had a really long day, and whumpee keeps making the same dumb mistakes over and over again so it’s understandable. surely it won’t happen again - whumper is nothing like their previous partner/friend/family member, it’s clearly just a problem with whumpee, they need to learn to be better
caretaker raging and loudly ranting about something unrelated to whumpee that pissed them off and feeling like a bucket of cold water has been dumped on them when they look and see whumpee slowly backing away from them, too nervous to make eye contact, hiding their hands behind their back so caretaker wouldn’t see how badly they’re shaking. whumpee knows caretaker would never hurt them and isn’t mad at them and they’re deeply ashamed of being scared but they can’t shake the instinctual fear

What they did to me was disgusting becomes I am disgusting
What happened can’t be changed becomes I’ll be like this forever

i live for realistic whump scenarios abuse whump domestic whump nsfwhump it’s all very dear to me.
just hits so much better when whumper is a plain old abuser whether it be a partner or parent/guardian/family member or authority figure or anything of the sort it not only adds an additional layer of inherent familiarity between whumper and whumpee which leads to complicated feelings and fun dynamics to explore but it’s also like. whumpee’s life continues. the world keeps spinning. the abuse continues and it never stops and it’s sometimes good and sometimes really, really bad but there’s still work and chores and errands and whumpee is always trying to keep it together but they’re so close to bursting and oh god the shame, no one must know, the very legitimate fear of being victim blamed… hahdjjdjd so good!!!
I like when a whumpee says the most casual things that break your heart without even realizing it. Bonus points if Caretaker puts on a fake smile and ignores it because they don’t wanna break down in front of whumpee and ruin their mood.

"And that was when I realised, man, maybe I should just stop eating. I mean, I was throwing up all my food anyway because of the stress, so what did it matter?" Whumpee explained casually. "I mean, getting choked out almost daily puts a kind of stress on your body. You know? Anyway, I started eating way less, since I wasn't keeping it down. And that helped. But anyway, what do you want for dinner?"
whumpee and caretaker being good friends who end up having a falling out. when caretaker, after several months, realises they miss whumpee and they come back to rekindle their friendship, whumpee welcomes them back with open arms.
still, something is distinctly wrong. caretaker can’t get over the apprehension in their voice, the constant tension, the flinching - surely their falling out wasn’t so bad that whumpee is now scared and thinks of caretaker as some kind of monster.
that is, until they bring this up to a mutual friend out of frustration, and the friend’s eyebrows furrow in confusion.
“oh… you don’t know.”
caretaker raises an eyebrow. “know what?”
“about what happened. while you were gone.”
Whumpee that’s been hurt so many times that they find it hard to believe that people actually care for them
Because how can anyone love someone as repulsive as them?

whumpee with an eating disorder just hits for me there’s nothing better than a whumpee with copious amounts of self hatred that just contribute to the whump. bonus points if they were/are in an intimate relationship with whumper who keeps making comments about their weight/body/how much and what they eat until it’s all they can think about. whumpee who can’t even stand the sight of themselves in the mirror anymore

Whumpees who don't realize they were Whumped until later
Whumpee casually talking to their team about their time with Medic where they dug into their wounds to see what really was the issue and told them that they didn't have pain killers before trailing off and realizing how absolutely messed up that sounds

Reminiscing on memories and fondly recounting them before realizing that Whumper was not giving them advice on their methods and instead just brutally beating them down
Whumpee on a new team talking about how their old team and how they shunned them from most things and had them do most of the work. New team is appalled by the old team's behavior and is now demanding Whumpee to give names
"Well yeah I was there for a while but the most that they did was take my blood and put me on morphine most of the time and ran these weird tests on my powers and...Oh. Oh that wasn't normal."
absolutely love sunshine whumpees forever and ever like sorry but it’s alwaysssss going to hit for me. either whumpee who survived the worst horrors imaginable and swallowed down all the trauma and forced themselves to go back to the way they used to be, always smiling and positive and being the heart and soul of the group, too embarrassed and ashamed of the whump to even attempt to open up about it or whumpee who is just grateful for life after everything, grateful for their friends, grateful to be free and alive and wants to help others feel that way too and is endlessly kind and genuinely passionate about helping people… peak to me either way 🙂↕️
