Ettore is italian; Cyprian is described as "mediterranean" (the region where italy lies)
Ettore says that Cyprian reminds him of himself ("Ettore", before the reveal of his identity), though this could just as easily be strictly a reference to their shared cultural upbringing, training, attitudes, mannerisms, etc
Ettore is older than Stewards usually get, old enough to have sons Cyprian's and Marcus's age, especially if he fathered Marcus young (perhaps as a novitiate)
Ettore is strong enough to have lived this long without succumbing to his shadow, strong enough to drink and fuck and carouse without succumbing; Marcus was strong enough to match Justice, the strongest in the Hall, and Cyprian was not only on track to be better than both of them but also was strong enough to resist TDK's direct and intentional control of his shadow right after receiving it
Ettore left the Hall a long time ago for unknown reasons and has no known shieldmate
Euphemia (the Elder Steward) claimed in DR that Cyprian's father was her shieldmate, the assumption at the time being either that he had died 6 years ago or that she was referring to Jannick in a functional or honorary capacity; this would explain why Euphemia never took another shieldmate -- Justice confirmed that they cannot overlap the shieldmate bond or form a new one until the old one is severed by death; Euphemia's shieldmate didn't die, he simply chose to leave the Hall and their partnership; it may also explain why Euphemia still sent the kids to him for help, especially if there is more to the story of his leaving the Hall than we yet know
Ettore is a foil for Cyprian in the narrative, the character that directly challenges his beliefs and emphasizes his strengths and weaknesses through contrast and comparison; he is a cautionary tale of what Cyprian would become if he lost the faith and sense of duty that is essential to his character, which makes perfect sense of [functionally] a deadbeat dad introduced late in his son's life during a time of emotional crisis and change
Ettore was shot by Sinclair, yes, but Justice was shot too, aboard the Sealgair when we first were introduced to him, and he also cracked his head, and also spent quite a while unconscious facedown in water, and he walked it off!! i'm just saying, until we see Ettore's body and get confirmation of death, that roguish son of a bitch is fine
