if i had to hazard a guess as to why the english & scots independently named 2 different potato and cabbage dishes silly names (bubble & squeak and rumbledethumps respectively) i would say it's probably bcos both dishes are designed to use up reheated leftovers and coming up with a whimsical name makes it an easier sell on your kids vs just saying 'tonight we are having yesterday's potatoes'
