       he’s on the floor , the sleeves of his t-shirt rolled as far as they can go as he’s shuffled as close as physically possible to the fan desperately trying to cool the apartment . in his lap rests two dogs , too large and too warm to both be cramped into his personal space but he doesn’t have the heart to push them away . he’s been occupied with scratching behind junkyard’s ear when she speaks , and little can describe the happy summersault his heart does as the familiar logo shows up on the monitor . ‘ no way , you got stardew valley ! ‘ , they have a ps4 down at the office ( for the kids , his boss had insisted - although the receipts showing he occupied it late into the night after everyone had gone home spoke for themselves ) , and through it preston had gotten quite familiar with the game - looking over the shoulder of teens passing through . it had a catchy tune , and there was something calming about the repetitive motions - watching things grow , even if it was just in pixles . ‘ how’d you guess it’d be up my alley ? is it the hat ? i haven’t even worn it out ! ‘ a large smile spreads across his face , teeth showing and eyes crinkling . there’s amusement in his voice , the ‘thank you for thinking of me’ remains unsaid , but it’s clearly lingering in the soft edge of his smile . he’ll have plenty of time to thank her when she’s not on edge , and in ways more genuine than words . for starters , he won’t push for pineapple on the pizza . ‘ it’s a good time , i promise ! ‘ he tries to not wiggle despite the excitement making his legs itch to move , the dogs still napping soundly against his thighs , ‘ you can even have a pet ! ‘

       he drops to his hunches right as bullets begin to fly past , musket easily slipping from his shoulder and into his waiting arms , ‘ huh , ‘ he huffs , feigning surprise as he peers around , ‘ so this is what your world looks like . ‘

           being  the  first  to  back  down  is  nervewracking  .  a  tense moment passes , and as the other’s weapon is lowered he all but clenches his teeth as to not visibly exhale the anxious breath he’s been holding  .  cautiously a smile pulls at one corner of scarred lips  ,  ‘  why thank you  ,  i’m glad you think so  .  i wouldn’t have been all that thrilled ‘bout it either  .  ‘  he risks responding  ,  but makes no indication on moving from where he first halted his approach  ,  ‘  about bein’ killed  ,  that is  .  ‘  finally , he shuffles slightly , hitching the strap ‘roud his arm up over his shoulder , securing his weapon out of sight .  ‘  i’m not out here lookin’ for trouble , so i reckon it ought to not have t’come to that  .  the  name’s  preston  garvey  ,  i  wasn’t -----  expectin’  any run-ins all the way out here . you doing alright , ‘f you don’t mind me asking  ?  ‘
