athenas eyes were so wide the whites of them shown in the low light of sunset. another branch broke, something was aggressively sniffing the branches, something bigger than one of the wild hogs. ''don't move.'' they weren't above begging if they had to for the other to stay put. her eyes dropped down to the ground where the shadow lay thick but broken by the foliage in some places, whatever that thing was it was tall. far taller than either of them by far! ''we need to leave while it is doing whatever it is doing!'' they tugged gently but frantically on the others tattered sleeve.
noah was determined, they were gonna do this. whatever shit was behind those bushes they were gonna fight it, no matter what. they weren’t the type to chicken out just because of the faint sound of broken branches and stupid, terrifying grunts. but athena seemed to have a very different idea, and as it had been stated before, noah had always had a terribly hard time saying no to whatever pretty people wanted. “ okay, okay! ” they whispered through greeted teeth, allowing themself to be dragged away from the place. when they were at —what noah thought— was a safe distance, they swiftly grabbed athena’s hand to start running in the opposite direction.
Atlas studies the plant in question a moment longer, squinting and tipping their head this way and that as if it might become more familiar from a different angle. But nope - didn't look much different than any other leafy green around here. "I dunno, I didn't exactly study plants ever. I mean, I've heard of poison oak but..." Had they ever actually learned what it looked like? They supposed there had never been much reason to. Sure, camping was a fun time every once in a while and at any point during those little trips they could've stumbled upon the very same plant, but it wasn't as if Atlas was scavenging while out and about in those days when camping was simple entertainment. No need to identify a plant if you weren't going to bother it in the first place, now was there?
"Alright little scout, no need for the sass, I hear you. This shit equals bad shit. Message received." Atlas performed a sort of salute like gesture, rocking back on their heels and looking around. So if this shit wasn't safe, they could only imagine what else was lurking on this island that could serve to harm or otherwise murder them all. Awesome.
"But yeah - if you're down to teach me, I'm happy to listen. Seems like a handy thing to know...and it ain't like we don't got time."
apparently, noah had been having the poor luck of only crossing paths with oblivious people this last month, and even when it didn’t bother them, it exasperated them. to no end. they worried all the time about the safety of the camp, about the weird noises all of them had been hearing and all the creatures appearing that seemed brought to them directly from a movie. tiny dinosaurs, for example, not in the wildest of their dreams, being a dinosaur kid, they would have imagined the existence of such creatures in current times. noah let out a sigh and then hummed in doubt at their words, their expression breaking into a small smile at their salute. “ okay, fine, apparently you’re a fast learner, that’s gonna be good. for both of us. ” or at least they expected them to be, they were not very good at explaining after all, and doing it more than once always made them nervous.
“ okay, so, follow me, ” they invited, turning around to go back to the location they’d been exploring before encountering atlas. it had some strange fruits and leaves they had never seen before. “ the first thing you wanna know is how to identify them by look only ” they started, checking over their shoulder to make sure they were right behind them. “ usually bright common colored fruits are okay, and the ones that smell sweet. the ones you had to avoid are those growing in bushes with spines or spurs, although not all of them are bad, but it’s better if you don’t even touch them. and in the case of leaves never trust three-leaved ones, those are most certainly venomous. like all the poisons: poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac. poison sumac isn’t three-leaved, though, but it was a three-leaved start. ” they shared non-stop, they loved this damn topic. then, after a pause: “ any questions so far? ”
@athenahowards sent: “ Come on, my sexy little crustacean. ”
noah was mid-sip the moment the phrase came from athena and the surprise made them choke on their water. it took her a few cofs to recover from it. “ wh— what? ” they stuttered once they could breathe properly again, feeling a blush creep from their neck to the top of their cheeks. “ wh— uhm, okay. ” noah acceded, a little bit hesitant, still thinking about the stupid pet name. then walked to them. they have called them seriously or it was just to mess with them? athena made them so, so nervous it was unfair.
@stayiinalive sent: “ The best love language is being irritating. I will annoy you because I love you. ”
“ aw ” the tender onomatopoeia vibrated through her lips accompanied with a soft smile. “ that’s one of the sweetest things someone has said to me, you’re a gift, my, ” they teased, bumping his arm with theirs. “ but why am i getting such honorable annoyance from you? ” noah asked with feigned solemnity, a serious, pompous expression painting their face.

@dancinglost sent: “ Come here, look at these little things. ”
noah frowned, confused and curious at the same time at the call, but she complied and got close to autumn without a single protest. “ what is it? ” they asked once they reached them.
logan followed noah along with no qualms whatsoever. she was on this mission for them, to help. honestly, grateful to be tagging along at all. this island had felt incredibly lonely thus far. logan, normally introverted but feeling desperate for human contact here, tried to make connections, but everyone was... hard to reach. like a bad phone signal. shrugging happily, logan listened to noah's direction and turned when they said which way to go. and then her heart promptly dropped into her asshole. "holy... shit..." she whispered to herself, possibly quiet enough noah couldn't even hear her.
without even thinking about it, logan quickly bent down and snatched one of these glowing oddities from the ground. "looks like it," logan answered noah's mushroom question, peering at the shape of the object. she couldn't help but smirk at the idea brewing in her head. "pretty fucking wicked, don't you think?" she shook her head. "i mean, what even is this fucking island?"
a shriek, literally a loud, high-pitched cry made its way through noah’s lip at logan’s actions. their eyes open like saucers and hands raised in front of them, mid-motion because it was too late to keep the girlfrom snatching one of the glowing, weird-as-fuck mushrooms in front of them. “ logan ” they whined, arms dropping defeated at their sides. “ why did you do that, fucking cripes, they could be venomous? ” yet it was hard they were, logan seemed absolutely fine … for now. then, at her words, noah let out a snort — this island was in fact a goddamned freaky thing. “ yeah, wicked, but also unknown and potentially dangerous. are you feeling okay? any tickles or stings in your hands? any nausea or dizziness? ” they interrogated with concern, and next: “ we should make a taste, see if they're edible or something, although i’ve never trusted natural glowing things. ” much less those with the ability to glow in the light of day, especially because they have never seen such thing.
dropping their bag, they took out the pocket knife attached to one of the belt loops in their overalls. then, proceeded to squat in front of one of the mushrooms to make a cut in its head’s surface and a second one in its stipe. nothing came out of it. “ okay, no weird liquids, which means the ground is safe, ” they informed, sitting in front of them and gesturing to logan to do the same. “ do you know how to test nature things to know if they’re gonna kill you? ”
"he would like you a lot," ariel said, immediately. because it was true. ariel's father always knew a helper when he saw them, no matter what, and they were his favorite kind of people. it was why he'd fallen in love with her mother, after all, even though they came from practically different worlds.
"oh." she hadn't meant to make noah upset, hadn't considered that noah might think she meant reality, not the imagined world in ariel's own head. guilt and panic flood ariel when she saw the grief in noah's eyes. she was such an idiot; why was she always doing this? her hands fluttered in the air, useless, for a moment, before she reached out and wrapped her hand around noah's wrist.
"i'm so sorry," ariel whispered. "i'm sure he's fine. we'll be home, soon, and you can see for yourself. do you have... is there anyone there? to take care of him?" ariel couldn't think of her own parents, home alone. she couldn't think about yeye, alone on saturday mornings. she couldn't think about what popo would think, if she and wai gong would still be in china-- she couldn't think about it, or she'd never think about anything else ever again.
she focused on noah, and the imagined world where her father was here with her, and forced herself to breathe. "do you have siblings? grandparents?"
a soft smile touched their gesture at ariel’s words, if they were fully honest, they liked to be liked and ariel’s dad seemed like a cool guy to be around. he reminded noah of their own dad with the handyman thing, just … a lot gentler.
the unexpected touch made them jump a little, but their body relaxed immediately the next second — they hadn’t been touched tenderly in a while and they had forgotten how nice it could feel. “ yeah, don’t worry, ” they answered, trying to take the weight away from the topic, and didn’t say anything about how they believed they wouldn’t be home anytime soon, because neither of them needed to land on that conversation, things were hard enough already to get them worse. “ i have a younger brother, his name is theo. he’s good, probably holding it together better than my dad. ” a laugh came out of their lips as a snort, slightly derisive thinking about theo’s current situation — they really hoped he was okay.
“ what about you? any siblings or got the fortune to be an only child? ” noah joked again, feeling themself falling back into their comfort zone, into their comfort self. they didn’t really think being an only child was a fortunate thing, though, but they always jested about it with theo, messing with him about how much of a burden he was to them.
"OK, but how is "aliens" any weirder explanation for how we're here and why everything's... like this." Ren shrugged, "I don't know. It seems as good an explanation to me."
noah's head snapped to their side, the word aliens immediately capturing their attention. “ what do you mean? you think they were responsible for the crash? like they ... shot down the plane or something? ” they had watched an episode of the x-files with a similar plot. they knew aliens could do stuff like that. “ and then what, they planted a giant sloth in the woods behind our camp? ” the question and its tone were genuine to the core, eyes big and expectant at the prospect of ren's answer. it was a very plausible possibility, they had thought about it a bunch of times but didn't think anyone would agree, so they had kept it to themself.

Taking a deep breath and shaking himself off, Bran plastered his usual calm smile on his face, pushing his surprisingly intact glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Are you alright?"
noah looked up, brows furrowed in confusion. “ uh, yes? yeah, i’m— i’m fine, ” they answered, a little bit of uncertainty in their voice, but mostly because of the opposing question that of their own reply. “ what about you? are you okay? can i help you with anything? ” maybe they needed something, but didn’t know how to ask for it, so they gave them a little window.
"Yeah, I have no idea, but... there's definitely something there... uh don't panic or anything... I think I just saw something move... there." she moved her head ever so slightly to look at them and gave a slow nod in the direction she meant. "I'm not gonna go look, I feel like that's 'the first person to die in a horror movie' sort of stuff." they explained, "Personally, I vote for back away slowly and hope that we find some other people before we see it again." they shrugged slightly, "Safety in numbers, y'no?"
okay, they were obviously not going to panic, they were a little bit of an imbecile sometimes, and reckless in other situations, but they were almost never out of control. they knew autumn didn’t know them, but that had been offensive nonetheless. “ that person you described sounds a lot like me ” because they were, indeed, imbecile and reckless, and also the kind of person to go look behind the bushes just to end up being ate by some three-headed seven-foot tall monster. “ okay, okay, your idea is good. because mine was actually going there to look, so, yeah, no, i’m voting for yours. totally. ” they nodded profusely and immediately looked back, making sure they were safe to walk backward without falling on their ass and alerting of their presence to whatever was behind the thick vegetation a few feet away. giving careful steps and using their arms extended in front of them for balance, they whispered: “ how far away you think we should be to start running? ”
now is not the time to start shit, chuckles, they reminded themselves. if you're a dick to everyone, they eat you first when this shit goes lord of the flies. their brain felt like it was running too fast, trying to decide whether this is the type of survivor you act casual or serious around. everyone responds differently, and chuck's attempts to keep everyone happy are beginning to bleed into each other. their stomach twists. they can't even categorize how they actually felt - a minute ago they were on edge, now they're cracking wise... fuck. they need to pick a mood and stick in it, because if the ground keeps shifting beneath their feet they're going to fall through the cracks. wait, what metaphor am i on? shit, how long have i been thinking? i need to say something back.
" yeah, chuck. last time i checked, anyway, " they laughed. it's natural. as if this is normal, as if they're just camping. nothing is wrong at all. nothing. happy-go-lucky-chucky. there. " nice to meetcha. wish it was under better circumstances, but what can you do? " chuck's eyes dart back and forth, trying to remember what role they're supposed to be playing right now.
noah calmly observed chuck, watching them go quiet for a moment. silence had never bothered them, so they went back to their work with the ropes, securing knots and creating a whole braid to make the supply even firmer. at chuck’s answer, they raised their attention and smiled, mild but genuine. “ yeah, exactly, there’s nothing we can do but a good ol’ swing to stop thinking about how miserable we are ” they answered, their tone very similar to the one they used every time their brother was feeling down — something empathetic, but not overwhelming, not overly interested or too woeful.
“ okay, so, hold this, please ” they asked then, handing them the almost perfectly braided ropes. “ i’m pretty sure i saw some airplane sits somewhere near the camp, i think those would make a better swing sit than a flat, hard table, what you think? ” they might be too soft or too difficult to attach to their rope, but they had to try, this may end up being everyone’s main source of entertaining after all. but even if it weren’t, if it were to be just for the two of them, noah’s ass wouldn’t mind the comfort, either. “ would you rather join me or wait here? ” they asked then, indicating the path behind their back. they weren't sure if they could join them at all, because if noah remembered correctly, chuck had an injury of some sort from the crash, but they weren't quiet sure.
Ellie spelled out the name in the book. She wondered if there was an answer key in this book and made a mental note to rip out and toss the temptation away. "I think you might be right. One of the vertical grids aligns with the spelling of it. Thanks," she flashed a warm smile their way and asked, "Do you know if the hat was in a box? The really expensive ones usually come in large boxes to keep the hat from flattening out or from getting damaged. I think someone was asking for a box or crate of sorts to help with transporting supplies." She wanted to reassure her friend—companion? acquaintance?— that she'd seen them sporting the large sun hat and that it suited them, but thought it best to not be so foward. "Wasn't the premise of Garfield, just a large cat who loved lasagna? Why would a cat need a sidekick?— to steal lasagna?" She giggled, "I'd kill for some lasagna right about now."
a childish, proud smile made its way into noah’s features — they didn’t know for sure if they were right, but the fact it fit made them more confident, and their smile became slightly proud at the thought. “ yes, it was in a box, we used it to store some stuff, actually. it was pretty big ” they commented and picked a pebble to fiddle it between their restless fingers. “ i wondered why would people need a box for a hat, but … yeah, now i get it. i guess ” they didn’t really, rich people were really fucking weird. throwing the small stone up and catching it in their hand a bunch of times, noah snorted at the new inquiry. they’ve never really questioned their cartoons’ plots, they just rolled with it — they were, after all, the most wholesome form they have found to keep their mind vacant when they needed it the most. “ well, i think … ” they started, but suddenly an idea came to their mind and took over completely, making them still the movements of their hand, the stone there quickly forgotten. yeah, exactly, why would john be garfield’s sidekick if it was him the one garfield stole lasagna from? “ wait, i think it’s odie! ” it came seemingly out of nowhere, a little bit blunt and too excited, perhaps. their mind did that sometimes. “ i mean, you’re right, it doesn’t make sense john’s help is the one garfield uses to steal lasagna because— because he is the one garfield’s stealing it from in the first place! so … yeah, it should be odie, the dog ” they clarified, the absolute confidence of their tone could be seen reflected in their determined frown. then, with a shrug while their attention went back to the pebble: “ it’s offensive, though, odie was always more an annoyance to garfield than a partner, but whatever. i'd kill for some lasagna now too. ”
Vala jumped at the surprised squeak, hand flying to their heart as it flew into their mouth. They hadn't notice anyone nearby. "Sorry, for surprising you, that is."
The firefighter. They'd seen the stranger around the camp, oddly helpful to those who needed it. "Uh," it took them a second to fully register what they had said. "Anything really, supplies, clues to who built this place. If we've crashed here but no one's found us, that could be because they can't find the damn island itself - clearly, though, someone found this place before." And I intend to find out just who they were.
noah simply shrugged at their apology, giving them one of their ‘ it’s okay ’ smiles. they were a lot more interested in whatever vala had going on here because if they could help, they’ll definitely do it. that had been the way to keep their mind occupied all this time, to not get it to collapse because of their thoughts and they weren’t gonna let go of that … what could happen if they did terrified them to death. “ okay, that sounds like a very smart idea, ” they conceded, although they couldn’t now, they have never been the smart type, frankly. “ can i help you? i already got my shower and collected water and fruit and helped with the fire, i’m getting … bored. and this sounds like a challenge, at least to me that i’m kind of an idiot. ” the clear joke came accompanied by a lopsided smile, something between childish and charming. “ just tell me what i have to look for, more or less, and you’ll have me on it. ”

"oh, work..." skylar visibly deflated. it wasn't that he was lazy (he was), he was just trying to milk this emergency vacation for all it was worth (not a lot). still, picking berries didn't sound half as hard as the other chores in this joint, and it was definitely a lot easier than trying to keep every shirt in an old navy folded while 17 middle aged women rifled through your displays. "yeah, okay. sounds like a good time. i reserve the right to eat, like, half my berries before they get cooked, though. i've literally never met a meal i couldn't eat half the ingredients of ahead of schedule." he literally wasn't allowed in the kitchen on thanksgiving anymore. you try raw turkey one time....
“ hm, yeah, work ” they answered mockingly, and gave him a fond eye-roll when he mentioned eating half his collected fruits. noah couldn’t judge him even if they wanted to, really, if they hadn’t their mind so tiringly set on helping, they’d be collecting berries and eating them on their way back too. “ half the amount you gather will still be more than what i’d collect on my own, so serve yourself ” they shrugged and started walking, the way to their destiny clear enough to look like a trail already — they’d been traveling through it back and forth so many times they forged some sort of a path among the bushes. “ ah, by the way! please be careful with those ” they pointed to a plant with yellow-ish lobed leaflets while making their way through the woods with the help of a large stick. “ it’s gonna give you a rash if you aren’t. ”
"I'm sure they do, Joey won't let me sleep unless he can curl up on my feet, he's a strange one, bless his heart." Myles smiled, he was trying to think positive, but it was hard not to miss him. It would be impossible if his husband wasn't here, even if at the same time he wished for his sake he wasn't trapped here. It was a catch 22. "A bit of both really, it messes her up poor girl, so we have this food the vet recommended," he explained, he'd told his sister-in-law all of this, and he knew she loved those cats about as much as he did, he just couldn't help the worrying. "How about you?" he asked, "Do you have any pets back at home?"
noah smiled fondly, listening with raptured attention to the way myles talked about his cats. they loved cats, they were probably their favorite animal in the entire world but didn’t have much time to care for one of their own. “ they sound like such endearing babies, my, i’d love to meet them ” they’d be over the moon, honestly, they always enjoyed other people’s cats, loved interacting with them if they liked or loving the from afar if they weren’t very into making human friends. noah loved them as they came, just being grateful that they existed at all. “ oh, no, i don’t. my brother has a cat and a dog he adopted with my dad, they’ve been abandoned and the volunteers thought they helped each other survive, so the rule was adopting them together and stuff? ” they didn’t know how that really worked, but they tried to explain it the better they could. “ so they took both home and honestly, they adore each other. sleep together, play all day, and share food even if that’s … not really good for them? but they’re used to it. ” and theo adored them, completely. they made him smile in a way not even the stupidest of their jokes had in their entire lives. “ how did you get your kitties, my? ”
